Trip number 2 on the mini bus to Saffron Walden. Buoyed by laughter and questionable trivia the lads hit the warm-up buzzing—three points firmly in their sights.
The first quarter started with plenty of intent but little reward. Magpies struggled to keep hold of the ball as Walden pressed hard and looked well drilled. Magpies had some good passages of play towards the end of the first quarter which finished goalless.
A few brief notes from Coach Robbie and moments later some slick, tik-tak hockey sliced open the Walden defence and Seth Read found the backboard to make it 1–0. The lead didn’t last long, though, as Walden hit back with a well-worked goal. Ali Haslam brought back the lead as he hit a reverse undercut which flew past the keeper’s nose and pinged off the post, and in. His celebration? Dubious.
Walden weren’t done, though, replying with two quick goals to snatch a 3–2 lead and plant a little doubt in Magpie minds. Seth Read once again rallied the troops to put the game level once again.
From there, Magpies’ fitness started to show. Andrew Johnson took down an aerial from Olly Hall, which was recycled and sparked a move that ended in another tidy finish to make it 4-3. With the defence locking things down and the momentum fully theirs, Magpies capitalised on a flurry of short corners and stormed to a confident 7–3 win.
