Our first league match of the season took place at home on a fine, sunny morning. Beccles soon showed their strength with play mainly in our half despite excellent defensive work by Daphne Beckett, Gillian Stokes and Bethany Whipps. Beccles forwards seemed to find gaps in our defence and took full advantage. Sure enough, they scored quite close to the goal. Play continued at a pace with superb tackling by Alison Priest and great runs by Georgie Saunders. Beccles were awarded a short corner and scored again but we kept our heads up.
At half time, we all agreed that the game was enjoyable and weren’t put off by the score. In fact, at the start of the second half, Lily Smith raced up the right wing and struck the ball into Beccles’ circle where a defender stopped it. Jo Meyer seized the chance to take the ball and hit it into their goal. The youngsters in our team soon showed their strength in outrunning the Beccles ladies. Zara Broadly, Holly Archer and Maisie Woolward made some fine runs. We were awarded a short corner, struck by Jo Meyer to Jose Tibbenham who smashed it home. Peg Bridges, in goal, made some good saves and just before the end of the match, Lily Smith scored a great goal.
