The Magpies Women's 1s hosted Southgate Women's 1s on Saturday in an important game with Southgate sitting just above magpies in the table.
The first half of the game was fairly even with both teams creating chances. There was strong defending by both teams with Southgate having a number of short corners in which magpies defended well and limited the shots on target. Magpies also created some brilliant chances with their high, intense pressure on the Southgate midfield and defence. However, the first half ended in 0-0.
The second half the game continued to be fairly even and with both teams fighting to take the 3 points, you could feel the tension in the air. Both teams continued to try and create chances. Magpies managed the nerves the best as they continued to move the ball around the pitch patiently. This started to create the gaps between Southgate’s press. The breakthrough came when Jess Howland picked up the ball in the right hand corner and caused the Southgate defence to foul her in the D resulting in a a penalty stroke being awarded. Captain Hannah DS stepped up and calmly slotted the ball passed the Southgate keeper.
With this goal under their belts, magpies continued to play their game and frustrated Southgate as they tried the level the game. However magpies managed the game calmly to the final whistle, resulting in the teams first win of the season.
The final score was 1-0.
