Magpies Face Crucial Double-Header

With games being postponed due to the weather Magpies face a crucial weekend in London playing Oxted on the Saturday followed by Bromley and Beckenham on Sunday.The league table shows Magpies wedged between bottom placed Bromley ,and Oxted just above them. With Oxted sitting on nine points and Magpies on seven, Magpies could find themselves out of the play off position by Saturday evening ,Sunday would then offer an opportunity to pull away from Oxted and Bromley as Oxted have a tough game against Holcombe.

Whilst Ben Wright is likely to miss Saturday’s game, Elliot Smith returns to the squad and Leigh Sitch is unavailable due to coaching commitments. A strong squad is available which is more than capable of securing maximum points over the weekend. Training, whilst disrupted by weather , has been going well and it is really good to report on only one injury in the squad.

PROMISING FORECAST FOR PIVOTAL WEEKEND

The thaw came a little too late to save last Sunday's extensive programme of matches and far too late to avoid another blank Saturday at Weybread but at least the forecast for this coming weekend looks more promising obviating, hopefully, any further need for fingers to be crossed. Doing the ironing on a Saturday afternoon is no substitute for hockey!

This coming weekend was always going to be an important one for both 1^st teams but now with both having double-headers it is even more important and the results could well be pivotal come the end of the season. After a break of twelve weeks from outdoor league action, due to the indoor season and the bad weather over the last two weekends, both have matches against teams near them at the wrong end of their respective leagues.

The Ladies (with 10 points) are first into action on Saturday away to Old Loughtonians (12.30) who are on six points and who they beat by the only goal of the game back in October while on Sunday they host Maidstone (12.45) who are just behind them on eight points. Maidstone won 1-0 when the teams met previously but the result was tough on Magpies who deserved at least a point. Meanwhile on Saturday the Men's 1sts (with 7 points) are away to Oxted (3.30) who surprisingly won 5-1 at Weybread at the beginning of October. Oxted are just ahead of Magpies on 9 points so at least a point is needed to stop this gap widening while on Sunday skipper Mark Wheelhouse and his squad are away to Bromley and Beckenham (1.00) who are rooted to the bottom of table with just two points – one of which they gained in a 2-2 draw at Weybread in the middle of October. Fingers will certainly be crossed for these vital matches!

The Ladies' 2nds and Men's 3rds have centre stage at Weybread on Saturday with the Ladies' 2nds hosting Broadland (11.00) and they will be anxious to get back on the winning trail after dropping their first points of the season in their last match. Meanwhile the Men's 3rds, who are still in promotion contention despite a poor spell just before and after the mid-season break, entertain Gorleston (2.15) who they beat 2-0 in October so a good competitive game is in prospect. Unfortunately skipper Matt Brand will be out for the rest of the season as he needs to keep his left arm in a sling for a few more weeks following his nasty shoulder injury.

In other home matches the Men's 4ths, who are in need of points, take on Lowestoft Railway (10.30) and they will be followed on the water-based by Murray Graham and his Men's 7ths who have won their last nine matches. Last but certainly not least the Ladies' 6ths will be looking to complete the double over Loddon 2nds when they meet at 4.00.

Away from home the Ladies' 5ths will be looking to beat Diss (2.00) in a re-arranged match after a loss and two draws in their last three games and the Men's 2nds must have a good chance of a much needed win when they travel to play lowly St Ives (2.00). Meanwhile the Men's 5ths and Men's 6ths have tough looking games away to, respectively, second placed UEA (1.00) and fourth placed Pelicans 3rds (2.00) with the Boys Development also travelling to West Norfolk to play Pelicans (11.00) in a match originally scheduled for 26 November.

Last Sunday we were hoping for a feast of hockey at Weybread before the weather did its worst but with the forecast in our favour we have a similar prospect this weekend. The day gets under way with the Magpies' U10 & U12 Boys' Minis (9.30) followed by the vital Ladies' 1sts versus Maidstone match before Philip Cobbald and his Over 50 Vets take on Reading (2.15) in the quarter-final of the EHB Masters Cup. After knocking in a total of 21 goals in their first three rounds (all played away) it will be interesting to see how they get on against what is sure to be a strong Reading team. In another re-arranged match the U18 Girls play Havering in the second round of the EHB Plate (2.00) having overcome Norwich City in the previous round. Good luck to all our teams in action this weekend when it will be good to play and see some hockey after the frustrations of the last two weekends.

I take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended and organised the recent Not The Cheese and Wine! in Tibbenham's Barn. Despite a lower that normal attendance we still made a welcome profit of £690. Whether or not you attended this event please come to the Silent Auction and Party in the clubhouse at 7.30pm on Saturday 10 March. Details of the Lots will be issued next week. It is still not too late to add your Lot in which case I should be delighted to hear from you.

Finally it is big 'thank you' to Irene Bicker and Merna Merrett our hard working fixture secretaries. The recent bad weather has given them a lot of extra work. Did we get frost and snow before Merna took on the Men's role three seasons ago?!

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM WEEKEND PREVIEW

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kilbourns.co.uk hope to return to National League action this weekend with a double header of matches. After two frustrating weekends of cancelled League matches Magpies play two crucial League matches this weekend against Old Loughtonians away on Saturday starting at 12.30 and on Sunday at home against Maidstone starting at 12.45.

With no League matches played by any team in this League for the last two weeks the League table is unchanged since the end of November, when we broke off for the Indoor season.

However a glance at the League table is a reminder of how crucial these two League games are for the three teams involved. Horsham remain in 10th place, whilst Old Loughtonians in 9th place occupy the relegation play off position just four points behind Magpies. Maidstone are in 8th place one position behind Magpies but two points below them. Magpies need to turn in two good performances and results this weekend to pull away from the danger zone.

Fortunately the Magpies squad looks much stronger than it did before Christmas with a number of players available or on their way back. Ellie Bale, Debbie Francis, Emily Wilford, Catherine Cranmer, Emma Lee-Smith and Anouska Hipperson are all available for one or both games this weekend. In the absence of goalkeeper Lisa Griffin this weekend Charlotte Lee-Smith returns to the squad. Hopefully Lucy Miller should also return to training this week after a long absence.

Harleston Magpies Ladies Preview

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM WEEKEND PREVIEW

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kilbourns.co.uk should have returned to outdoor National League action last weekend with a match at home against Maidstone on Sunday, but as we all know the weather wiped out nearly every National League match. This week the weather could still disrupt fixtures, but at the moment this Saturday Magpies play a local derby match away against Ipswich starting at 12.00. With Ipswich in 4th place eight points ahead of Magpies, this promises to be a testing encounter. Earlier in the season the match ended in a 1-1 draw after Ipswich took the lead and Magpies drew level late in the second half.

With no matches last weekend Magpies remain in 7th position, but uncomfortably close to the two relegation spots currently held by Horsham and Old Loughtonians in 10th and 9th positions respectively. At the moment Magpies have a four point advantage over Old Loughtonians.

Every point in the second half of the season will be precious and hard earned, but with the Maidstone game rearranged for Sunday Feb 19th and with a game against Old Loughtonians on the same weekend (Saturday Feb 18th) that promises to be a pivotal weekend for Magpies. With both teams below Magpies in the table they will be real pressure games.

Unbeaten League Leaders Visit Magpies

Magpies are hopeful of returning to outdoor action with the visit of league leaders Canterbury to Weybread on Sunday, push back 2.15 pm.The Kent side spent just one season in the Premier League, underlining the gulf between the leagues. However having returned to the East Conference their form has been good with no losses and but three drawn games. These draws came against sides at the top of the division,Old Loughtonians,Wimbledon and Holcombe.

Following the first half of the season’s disappointing results Magpies look to be in better form with only one injury and a squad strenthened by James Fanger and Rhodri Furlong.Tom Graham misses the game through injury as does Elliot Smith who has school commitments.

Unfortunately bad weather prevented last weekend’s game against Oxted being played. Oxted will play Magpies in the re-arranged game on Saturday week with a visit to Bromley and Beckenham on the Sunday.

FINGERS CROSSED FOR THE WEEKEND WEATHER

After last weekend when only the Ladies' 3rds managed to play it is fingers crossed for better weather this coming weekend when despite only three Ladies' teams being in action on Saturday we still have a busy programme of matches including an especially hectic Sunday at Weybread with seven matches across the two pitches.

Last Saturday Julie Podd and her Ladies' 3rds must have wondered why they were playing on a very cold afternoon when all the other matches had been called off! But play they did and they came away from Kings Lynn with an excellent 2-0 win over Pelicans 2nds with second half goals by MOTM Catriona MacIver (a member of the triumphant U16 indoor team) and Dominique Dyball. This win has moved the team up into third place in the Premier Division of the Norfolk League just behind second placed UEA who have three games in hand. The 3rds in common with two of our other Ladies' teams now have two weekends off. But there will be no rest for the Ladies' 1sts (weather permitting) who have a tough match away to local rivals Ipswich on Saturday (12.00) after the frustration of their postponed game against Maidstone which will now be played on Sunday week. Last season the team achieved an excellent 1-0 win in the corresponding fixture so a repeat this week would be very handy! Meantime the Ladies' 6ths will also be looking for much needed points when they entertain Norwich City 4ths (10.30) while the Ladies' 4ths have a home friendly against Broadland 2nds (12.15).

Silent Auction and Party (Saturday 10 March – clubhouse 7.30pm). I hope you have this event in your diary! Your support of the evening would be much appreciated. Lots are still required if we are to match the nearly £2300 we raised in a similar event in 2008. So if you kindly have an item or 'Promise' for inclusion, PLEASE let me know as soon as possible.

Back to this weekend's hockey at Weybread where on Saturday the Men's 2nds have a very demanding game against league leaders Ramgarhia (2.15) who have lost only one match all season and who won 4-2 when the teams met at the end of October. Another two or three wins are essential for Martin Fields and his team as they are only five points above the relegation zone. The Men's 5ths (4.00) and Men's 6ths (12.30) are also at home to, respectively, North Walsham and Dereham 5ths and a win for the 5ths is vital if they are to retain their outside chance of promotion in another very good season while the 6ths will be looking for three points to maintain their encouraging mid-table position.

Sunday at Weybread promises to provide a feast of hockey with the U16 Boys getting the ball rolling against Pelicans (10.15) in the EHB Midlands League 1 (before they play Rutland at 2.30) and next on the water-based will be the Men's Over 50s when they host Reading (12.00) in the quarter-finals of the EHB Masters Cup. Philip Cobbald and his squad have scored seven goals in each of the three earlier rounds (all away and with only a total of two goals conceded) and another exciting match is in prospect before the Men's 1sts take on league leaders Canterbury (2.15). The Kent team have recovered well from the disappointment of their swift relegation from the national premier league after just one season and to-date are undefeated in 2011/12 - so what better time for this record to be shattered! (After last Saturday's postponement the Men's 1sts now play Oxted away on Saturday week.) Meanwhile the U18 Girls take on Havering in the second round of the EHB Plate (11.00) having beaten Norwich City 4-0 in the previous round and the U16 Girls play Ipswich (4.00) to decide which team goes through to the Regional stage as EHB East League 1 winners after both sides have already qualified having won their four matches to-date.

a) The Great Britain women on their splendid silver medal in the Champions Trophy in Argentina. With coach Danny Kerry (ex-Pelicans HC and NCHA!) their preparations for London 2012 are going well.

b) Mark Pearn (GB, England and East Grinstead) and Alex Danson (GB, England and Reading) on being named UK Players of the Year for 2011 following the annual poll conducted amongst the British members of the Hockey Writers' Club. Mark (my favourite England player alongside Simon Mason!) also won the award in 2000.

Norwich City Mixed 1 Harleston Magpies Mixed 4 (Sunday 29 January 2012)

Harleston started their mixed campaign in good form against Norwich City at Taverham progressing into the next round of the cup. Harleston started well but after a good attack from Norwich, they went 1-0 down. This goal shocked Harleston who fought back well with good ball movements from the back all the way through to attack. Angie Wheelhouse and Emily Wilford combined well upfront and a good cross from Angie allowed Emily to find the backboard putting Harleston level. Harleston remained strong at the back and good tackles from Lauren Barber, Nick Dyson and Louisa Greenacre along with good saves from Marc Lloyd kept Norwich at bay. Harleston then went in front with a great team goal, accurate passing resulting in a cross from Angie which was put in the goal from a first time shot by Emily.

They then made it 3-1 before half time with another great ball across the D which allowed Gavin Cole on the back post to put it away and form a gap between the two teams. After half time the team came out with the same positive attitude and won many short corners, but were unfortunate not to be able to put any of them away. Magpies increased the pressure on the Norwich goal after Norwich were reduced to 10 players following a red. The fourth and final goal shortly followed, a strong run from Lucy Whiting forced another good ball into the D and Gavin was at the back post to slot the ball in. Overall a very pleasing team performance from Magpies.

For the first time in several months the 7ths played a game at Weybread that started before sunset. So blinking in the bright light and wearing a natty blue away strip the 7ths started this most local of local derbies without on field skipper Bardwell who was on a mission in Prague to increase Anglo-Czech relations.

A contrast in styles was evident from the warm ups with the 6ths going through a series of organised training exercises and the 7ths trying to decide who would be on field captain- a coalition was the answer, and who would play where- waste of time as forgotten by the first whistle.

The early exchanges involved a little sibling rivalry between the brothers Blackmore with honours even. 7ths took the lead after ten minutes where a break gave Roger Kent a shooting chance and his shot found the corner of the goal. Jon Wells then added a second direct from a short corner before muddled defending presented the 6ths with a goal. The two goal difference was restored when a Kent shot was well saved but Jon Wells lifted the rebound into the goal.

The 6ths were not without ideas or creativity but too often their final pass lacked accuracy.

7ths had two excellent moves that came to nothing before a flowing move saw Joe Walker cut in from the left and meeting the ball first time put it into the roof of the net.

Thanks go to the crowd for their unbiased support and to the 6ths for the best away tea we have had.

Magpies' Men Resume League Action

Following the league break, during which Magpies took part in the Premier Indoor National League, they return to outdoor league action on Saturday (2.00) with a crucial away game against Oxted. Magpies, who occupy the relegation play-off position, would move above Oxted if they could secure a win.

Whilst the indoor programme has helped the squad to keep fit three top level friendlies have been played to get the squad into shape for the league resumption. A loss against last season's North Conference winners Durham University has been followed by wins against Doncaster and Peterborough.

Whilst Magpies travel without Ben Wright and Mark Stacpoole, both unavailable through work commitments, they are strengthened by the return to the club of James Fanger and the signing of promising youngster Rhodri Furlong. Magpies' results in the first half of the season were affected by injuries to key players, namely captain Mark Wheelhouse, vice-captain Pete Bale and the experienced Tristan Baynes. All three have now returned to full fitness and will play their part in Magpies resurgence up the table.

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kilbourns.co.uk return to outdoor National League action this weekend, when they play Maidstone at home on Sunday starting at 12.30.

Magpies start the second half of the season in 7th position, but uncomfortably close to the two relegation spots currently held by Horsham and Old Loughtonians in 10th and 9th positions respectively.

As you can see from the League table above this is a very important match for both Magpies and Maidstone in the battle to pull away from the lower end of the table. In the earlier encounter in the season Magpies were very unfortunate to lose 1-0 to Maidstone, but having conceded a goal against the run of play, they found it very difficult to break Maidstone down in the freak heat wave conditions back in October.

Hopefully there will be a good home crowd to give Magpies the support they will need in this critical home game. A home win would give the team a massive boost in confidence as well as give them a lift up the table.

With regard to players Verity Blyth will be absent for the second half of the season as she is away travelling in NewZealand. Naomi Hull will also miss a number of League games because of work commitments. However Emily Wilford is available for the second half of the season and hopefully she will add some much needed fire power to the forward line. Catherine Cranmer will be available for most of the remaining League games and her experience will add much to the defence. We are also hopeful that Emma Lee-Smith will be available for a few games and her presence will certainly add significantly to the attacking options. Ellie Bale will play today and her experience has been missed. Debbie Francis has been given the medical all clear to start light training after having a baby in December (William) and hopefully Lucy Miller will be able to join her shortly after her operation.

WANTED - NATIONAL LEAGUE GOALS AND POINTS

After a break of ten weeks it is back to national league action this weekend for the 1st teams. On Saturday the Men travel to play Oxted (2.00) looking - after some encouraging build-up performances and with the welcome return of James Fanger after his spell with Chelmsford - for some badly needed points against a team just above them in the league and which surprisingly thumped them 5-1 at Weybread back at the beginning of October. Next day the Ladies entertain Maidstone (12.30) needing to find the net after four goalless defeats before the mid-season break. The Ladies were unlucky to be narrowly beaten by Maidstone (who are just below them in the league) earlier in the season so three points would be very welcome to get their season back on track. Hopefully they will be encouraged by the memory that this time last year they were about to embark on a winning sequence of seven games!

The two 2nd teams are at home on Saturday and while their records have been as chalk and cheese this season both need points for different reasons. The Ladies, who play Broadland (12.30), will want to get back to their usual winning way after a surprise defeat two weeks ago at the hands of IES and the Men, after a 4-2 (Lawrence Baynes 2) defeat last Saturday away to struggling Long Sutton, need points against mid-table Letchworth (2.15) to ensure they are not dragged into a relegation dogfight.

The matches at Weybread last Saturday were full of interest and incident with the Ladies' 5ths setting the ball rolling by having to come from behind to draw 1-1 against North Walsham 2nds through a second half goal by Sophie Long and later a Jemima Jacobs goal, soon after the break, was enough to give the Ladies' 3rds all three points against Thetford in a game they dominated for long stretches. The Ladies' 6ths then did well to hold league leaders Herlings to a 4-1 defeat especially bearing in mind the score was 8-1 to Herlings back in October. It was now the turn of the men's teams to get into the action and they did not disappoint. The Men's 4ths beat Norwich City 3rds 2-1 with goals by Jerry Blackmore (promoted for a couple of hours from the 6ths) and Stuart Peters with an expert penalty corner strike cancelling out City's early advantage. It was good to see 1st team coach Bill Williams turning out again for the club after a gap of nearly twenty years thereby teaming up again with former 1st team colleague Bob Skinner who remains one of the best tacklers in the club.

Meantime on the other pitch the Men's 3rds were getting off to a quick start against Cambridge Nomads 2nds with three goals in the first seven minutes through Kevin Ridley (who later in the game caused great merriment with his outrageous diagonal pass back into an acre of unmanned pitch and out of play!), Tiger Brice and Gavin Cole before Nomads pulled a goal back. Early in the second half the team made it 4-1 after the familiar cry of 'post' from the crowd was prescient (for once!) leaving the alert Toby Williamson with a simple tap-in! Defender Giles Flatt later took it upon himself to go up field and when the ball fell to him on the edge of the circle he rifled it into the net for the final goal and one of the best of the season.

The final match of the day was between hosts Men's 6ths and the ever-upward 7ths for whom skipper Murray Graham was back in goal after injury leaving Eric Davy, his very able deputy, to sportingly turn out for the 6ths. It was soon obvious that the generally very young and promising 6ths (fielding several players promoted from the Development squad) would be in for a testing time and unlikely to complete the double over their very experienced and much older rivals. The ever-deadly duo of Roger Kent and Jon Wells soon had the 7ths ahead and after Harry Haigh scored a fine goal for the 6ths Jon scored again with Joe Walker adding a fourth in typically opportunistic fashion after half time.

It is a big 'thank you' to all members who kindly umpired last weekend (at least one member did two games) including those who also played (once or even twice) before or after umpiring. From what I saw all our members were courteous (to be expected) to the umpires unlike one visitor at the end of his game.

In brief

a) Congratulations to the Mixed team on their 4-1 away win last Sunday over Norwich City in the EHB Trophy. After going behind they hit back to play some really good hockey producing two goals apiece for the in-form Emily Wilford and Gavin Cole and it was pleasing to see welcome new member Nick Dyson playing well at the back.

b) Best wishes to the U18 Boys who play Saffron Walden away on Sunday (2.00) in the fourth round of the EHB Cup.

c) Stuart Peters is looking for members to kindly umpire at the Magpies' Minis on the morning of Sunday 19 February. Magpies travellled to Kings Lynn for their third consecutive midday push back, the need for points now vital for their survival in the Premier Division.

Magpies started very well, keeping possession and attacking the home side's defence, and their positive start was rewarded when Kay Dennis put Magpies in front inside five minutes. Magpies continued to press, passing the ball around well between the midfield and forward lines, but couldn't extend their lead. Ellie O'Sullivan in the Magpies goal kept the away side in it with a brilliant save in a one on one situation, but Pelicans equalised soon after following a short corner, taking the level scoreline into half time.

Magpies came out for the second positive they could get something from the match, playing with much more confidence than has been apparent in recent weeks, but were unfortunate to concede again. This spurred Pelicans on, and shortly after they won a penalty flick which they executed perfectly to further extend their advantage. Magpies heads stayed up and they continued to fight to get back into the match, with Gina Scott, Emma Tolhurst and Bella Hall playing well in the Magpies defence. But it wasn't to be, and the final score was 3-1 to the home side.

A much improved performance from Magpies, which they must take into the match against Watton next week.

A TRIUMPH FOR OUR U16 GIRLS

I just have to start this week with the U16 Girls' triumph in Wolverhampton last weekend in the national indoor club championships. All nine players in the squad played extremely well after their extensive training programme and they did the club proud. They were disciplined, they defended resolutely, they passed the ball accurately, they scored some exciting goals, they converted all their penalty strokes under pressure and they did not get down when things went against them.

In front of an enthusiastic group of supporters the girls got off to a good start winning their two games on Saturday without conceding a goal and with a narrow win early on Sunday morning they made certain of a semi-final place with a game to go. They then clinched their pool with another win before meeting a strong Wycombe side for a place in the final. The team settled down after a rare early mistake to establish a 4-2 lead only to see it disappear in seconds. But they soon regained the lead only to concede at a corner with 20 seconds remaining! However, three excellently taken strokes in the shootout saw them into the final against Old Loughtonians. Two up at half time the team dominated their old rivals to win 5-1.

I have deliberately omitted mentioning any names as all nine members played their part in this outstanding achievement. Congratulations girls! But I will name and say 'Well done and thanks' to coach David Brook, manager Nigel Wooltorton and team administrator Heidi Wooltorton for all their hard work. Meantime the U18 Boys played well in their national indoor event at Whitgift School in Croydon despite going down to Wycombe in their first game and their cause was not helped by a hand injury during the game to Tom Graham. A further disappointment was the withdrawal from the event of Wakefield. On Sunday the team battled to two good draws with Taunton Vale (4-4) and Beeston (2-2) but these points were not enough to see them progress further in the competition.

As you may have seen from the message put out by Men's club captain Tristan Baynes, last week was a difficult one for him and the team captains owing to a severe shortage of players due to the U18s being committed in Croydon, other young players committed to school matches and other absences including injuries. Tristan and the captains are therefore to be congratulated on putting out full teams and it is also a big 'thank you' to those members who changed their arrangements to help out.

Despite being short of several regulars the Men's 2nds did well to push visitors and second placed Blueharts all the way. They were twice ahead through Lawrence Baynes and David Francis before a controversial equaliser and a late winner for Blueharts. In the circumstances it was no big surprise to see the Men's 3rds, 4ths and 6ths go down but good to see the Men's 5ths continue their excellent run with a 4-1 win over Sudbury 2nds with goals by Stuart Peters (making a rare appearance for the team), George Moore (2) and Angus Wilkinson. The Boys Development also had a good win 7-2 win over Dereham with Kieran Peters (doing better that his Dad!) scoring three goals with the others coming from Soloman Barker, Tristan Hipper, Jonty Herschel-Shorland and Myles King.

Wins were also in short supply for the Ladies' teams with the Ladies' 2nds losing 1-0 at home to IES thereby dropping points for the first time this season. Their cause was made difficult by absence of players away in Wolverhampton and the IES goalkeeper being in fine form. But with only one defeat in 16 games it is far too early to press the panic button! Meantime the Ladies' 3rds were getting a good point away to Norwich City 2nds and the Ladies' 5ths were drawing 0-0 with Dereham 4ths for the second time this season and the table-topping Girls' Development were beating Norwich Dragons 3-0 with Imogen Meynell-Anderson, Sophie Childs and Isobel Knowles finding the net.

The two 3rd teams top the bill at Weybread this coming Saturday with the Ladies' 3rds entertaining Thetford (6-2 conquerors of Magpies' 4ths last Saturday) at 12.15 and the Men's 3rds playing Cambridge Nomads 2nds (2.15). After dropping five points in the last two weeks the men will be determined to get back to winning ways. At 4.00pm the Men's 7ths are 'away' to the Men's 6ths seeking to reverse their only 'on-pitch' defeat of the season. Please see the website for the full list of this week's fixtures. Well done to the squad on this most deserved triumph. They won all their six matches over the two days. After winning their pool in fine style they were given a severe test in the semis by Wycombe who equalised with seconds on the clock. But they stayed calm to convert all their penalties in the shootout. They then dominated the final against Old Loughtonians with goals by Holly Baker (3), Sarah Brook and Lizzie Jones. This was a real team performance with all nine members playing a full part. Congratulations to all the players and to coach David Brook and manager Nigel Wooltorton.

vs Belper

Magpies started their first match by going straight on the attack. A penalty corner in the first minute was flicked high into the net by Sarah Brook. This settled everybody’s nerves and Magpies soon raced into a 3-0 lead through 2 more goals by Sarah. A 4th goal was added before half time from a good penalty corner routine finished off by Kira Wooltorton. The 2nd half slowed down a bit but Magpies scored 2 more goals through Sarah and Holly Baker to give them a perfect 6-0 start to the tournament.

vs Horsham

Magpies got off to another flying start with a flowing passing move resulting in a goal for Emily Brown. Magpies were then frustrated by a strong Horsham goalkeeper. Ellie O’Sullivan in the Magpies goal made several crucial saves to keep Magpies in front. Horsham’s resistance was finally broken by a Sarah Brook goal with 3 minutes left. This gave Magpies 6 points at the end of Day 1.

vs Kirkby Lonsdale

Magpies’ early start on Sunday morning was against the North Champions. Kirkby worked very hard to contain Magpies. Goalkeeper Ellie was a spectator for most of the game as Magpies struggled to score from a series of penalty corners. The deadlock was finally broken by a superb penalty stroke by Liz Jones in the 2nd half. Despite the close final score of 1-0 Magpies played excellent controlled hockey in this game and were happy to settle for the 3 points and a guaranteed place in the semi finals with a game to spare.

vs ISCA

Final group game was against West Champions from Exeter. A rare defensive lapse in concentration gifted ISCA an early lead. This kick started a response from Magpies and the goal of the tournament. With every player involved a move from back to front resulting in Sarah Brook setting up Holly Baker to sweep in a superb equaliser. Sarah then scored from a penalty corner and Holly scored a second to give Magpies a 3-1 half time lead. A superbly disciplined 2nd half performance saw Magpies deny ISCA any space to create goal scoring chances. Katherine Ridley added a 4th Magpies goal to give the girls a maximum 12 points from their group games.

Semi-final

Magpies now faced a much tougher test against last year’s champions: Wycombe. They had surprisingly finished as runners-up in the other group after losing a pulsating game vs Old Loughtonians. Our semi proved to be the outstanding match of the tournament with two skilful sides going on the attack. Wycombe went 1-0 up with Magpies responding instantly through Holly (1-1). It was soon 2-1 to Wycombe through a superb penalty corner. Magpies responded with one of their own through Liz Jones. 2-2 at half time. The second half was even more breathtaking with Magpies racing into a 4-2 lead thanks to 2 goals by Sarah Brook. Magpies relaxed slightly and Wycombe hit back to score 2 goals in a minute to make it 4-4 with 5 minutes left. Wycombe then had a goal disallowed and Magpies scored what looked like a dramatic winner through an amazing reverse stick flick by Liz Jones. Magpies were then cruelly denied victory by a contentious Wycombe goal with just 20 seconds left. An amazing 5-5 draw meant further drama in a penalty shoot out.

Wycombe went first and scored. Sarah Brook convincingly equalised. Wycombe then missed and Holly Baker scored to put Magpies in front. However, the two umpires disagreed and Holly was asked to retake her flick. Several minutes of confusion followed – one umpire felt that the keeper moved early but Holly pointed out that that did not affect her. The EHB official stepped in and eventually declared that the goal stands. Ellie O’Sullivan then almost pulled off a brilliant save. She pushed the ball up onto the bar and it came down on the line. More confusion over whether or not a goal was scored. The EHB official then declared it a goal and that it mattered not as Magpies had won! However, the score was 2-2 and Liz Jones still had our 3rd penalty stroke to take. She calmly stepped up under huge pressure and nailed her shot right into the corner. She was then swamped by jubilant team mates.

The Final

Magpies now felt very confident going into the Final. We had the luxury of watching the 2nd semi between Old Loughtonians and Horsham. This was a very tight match which finished 1-1 and was decided on flicks. Horsham missed all 3 of theirs and Old Loughts scored just 1.

Magpies dominated the final against Old Loughts and went into half time with a 2-0 lead thanks to 2 great finishes by Holly Baker. After half time Sarah added an individual effort to make it 3-0. Old Loughts responded with a short corner but Magpies continued to dictate the game by using their superior speed to move the ball around the whole pitch. Holly completed her hat trick and Liz Jones added a 5th from a penalty stroke.

Magpies were now deservedly National Champions thanks to a brilliant squad effort: superb defending by Ellie, Kira, Liz and Sarah (including 3 clean sheets) and a total of 23 goals. Players such as Catriona MacIver, Saffron Wilford and Emily Brown were playing indoors at this level for the first time and also made a massive contribution to Magpies success over the weekend.

A big thanks also to Magpies parents and supporters who all added to a positive attitude throughout the whole tournament.

Ladies 2nd Match Report

Magpies were under pressure this week without their manager Nigel Wooltorton and U16 girls missing due to indoor. The game began well with everybody pushing forward creating numerous chances, particularly Krystal Bishop and Anouska Hipperson. But IES were proving a tough side to break down, with some tight control in the centre and some good defending. Towards the end of the first half IES scored from a short corner, with their only shot of the game, and despite some strong attacking play from Magpies in response the score at half time remained 0-1.

The second half began with further pressure from a solid Magpies midfield, with the majority of play down the left side of the pitch. Tensions were rising as both teams struggled to secure victory, and the last half of the game saw an IES player receive a green card. The last few minutes of the game gave Magpies two short corners but they were unable to convert either, allowing IES to break into attack, though some strong defending from Siobhan Wooltorton and Arianne Dyball kept them from shooting.

Despite working tirelessly and an overall good team performance, Magpies were unable to beat a very strong IES keeper, who made several superb saves preventing the home side scoring and resulting in the first points dropped of the season.

For the first ten minutes or so, Magpies looked good, keeping possession of the ball and making ground into Thetford's defensive third. However, on the counter attack Thetford were dangerous and quickly won two consecutive short corners, and when, after the second of these, the ball wasn't cleared away properly, the home side went a goal infront. Thetford doubled their lead soon after, capitalising on Magpies losing the ball after their own short corner and made a quick breakaway, resulting in a quality reverse stick shot. Jess Harvey, in the Magpies goal, played well, making several crucial stops to keep the score down, but Thetford got a third goal midway through the half. Magpies kept their composure and found some of their promising play from the opening minutes and tried to get themselves back in the match, and they were rewarded with a Sarah Legg goal straight from a short corner, taking the scoreline 3-1 into half time.

Despite good work in the midfield by Magpies with Hannah Booty, Treacle Snelling, Rachel Goodson and Emily Parsons combining well, the second half was a carbon copy of the first. Thetford scored three more before Magpies doubled their tally, another super Sarah Legg short corner strike. Credit must go to the centre defender for her continuing quality performances and her fight and determination. Final score 6-2.

NATIONAL INDOOR STAGE FOR U16 GIRLS AND U18 BOYS

The U16 Girls and U18 Boys deserve centre stage this week as both will be playing over the coming weekend in their respective national indoor club championship finals. The Girls, having qualified as East champions, will be in action, as last year, at the Aldersley Leisure Village in Wolverhampton and the Boys, as East runner-up, will be playing at Whitgift School in Croydon. The U16 Girls were cruelly denied a semi-final place last year by conceding a last second goal in their final pool game and with six of last season's squad returning this year they will be determined to avoid a similar slip and to, hopefully, emulate the Magpies' squad which finished as champions three years ago. The U18 Boys have yet to become national champions (the U16 Boys achieved this distinction in 2004) so this year would be as good as any to get the club's name on the trophy for the first time.

Last Saturday brought much needed wins for some of our teams. The Ladies' 3rds outplayed visitors Lowestoft Railway 4-0 (Catherine Kilbourn, Dominique Dyball, Saffron Wilford, Catriona MacIver) to record their first win (apart from a walk-over) since their excellent start to the season; the Ladies' 6ths beat Lowestoft Railway 2nds at Weybread with goals by Jose Tibbenham and Clemmy Ardley-Forder and the Men's 2nds, after three consecutive defeats, beat Colchester 2-1 away with late goals by new skipper Martin Fields and Rhodri Furlong, the latter making a very welcome league debut for the club. Meantime the Ladies' 2nds were maintaining their 100% record with a hard fought 4-2 win (Krystal Bishop (2), Keira Booty, Lucy Whiting) over nearest challengers Sprowston (with Anouska Hipperson both the MOTM and the DOTD – is this a record?!) and the Men's 7ths were recording their eighth consecutive win by beating UEA 3rds with two goals each from the deadly duo of Roger Kent and Jon Wells. Goalkeeper Eric Davy, protected by a 'ring of steel', kept a clean sheet (albeit without a shot to save) which begs the question as to whether skipper Murray Graham will be able to force his way back into the team when fit again! But picking the team should help!

After the Ladies' 3rds it was time for the Men's 3rds to grace the water-based against Cambridge City 3rds with just eleven players despite the best endeavours of skipper Matt Brand due to playing numbers being tight throughout the club. After City took an early lead Matt was unfortunate (on his son Benjamin's 5^th birthday) to collide shortly afterwards with his goalkeeper, James Lane. The upshot was that Matt (who has not missed a game for 15 years) had to leave the field with what turned out to be his left collarbone broken in two places. Matt is, thankfully, making good progress from the operation which he had the next day in the N&N to put a plate in his shoulder. With the team reduced to nine for the first fifteen minutes of the second half (due to a school match commitment) the remaining players gave their all with James Lane pulling off a series of fine saves. He was later beaten to the MOTM award by Charlie Blandy in an arm wrestling competition after both had received the same number of votes! Restored to eleven with subs Jonathan Aldridge and Toby Williamson the team secured a dramatic late equaliser when Tiger Brice swept home Jonathan's accurate through pass. Some game!

Pressure on the Men's playing resources this week (with the U18 Boys in indoor action) is eased with the postponement of the Men's 7ths game (until 31 March) thanks to the much appreciated cooperation of Div 5NE league secretary David Burt and Felixstowe HC and the work of our men's fixture secretary Merna Merrett.

The league action at Weybread on Saturday is led by the Ladies' 2nds who entertain IES (12.30) and the Men's 2nds who host Blueharts (2.15). In other matches the Ladies' 5ths will be determined to get back to winning ways, after their defeat by leaders Norwich City 3rds last weekend, when they play Dereham 4ths away (12.45) and the Men's 5ths, after their 2-2 draw away to Ipswich 3rds, welcome Sudbury 2nds (1.45). UEA 3rd XI 0 Harleston Magpies 7th XI 4.

With the last game a distant memory from the start of December and the most strenuous exercise undertaken by most of the team being walk from the car park to the sports centre and out to the pitch at UEA, captain Bardwell realised that the start of the game could be a bit of a nightmare and showed great tactical nous by starting himself on the bench. He was right- passes were misplaced and the ball was given away too easily. There was a general lack of preparation highlighted by the sight of a Magpie kneeling down to do up a lace and not noticing that a weak UEA clearance passed within three feet without him knowing. No names, Well so no one takes umbrage.

Eventually a gradual improvement came and slowly Magpies established an element of control. Several short corners were won but came to nothing due in part to good goalkeeping.

An astute pass from Stuart Peters gave Pete Dolton a shooting chance from the top of the D. Roger Kent who was hovering near the goal thought the safest place would be in line with the goal. Unfortunately the shot was surprisingly accurate and was only stopped from going into the goal by a part of Roger's anatomy and caused great pain or amusement depending on who you were. The remedial treatment was to crawl and lie down beyond the back board. Magnanimously, Peter held not hard feelings towards Roger and Roger is incapable of hard feelings towards anyone.

In the cold light of day, I know Peter is now very embarrassed by the incident. What was he doing as a left defender getting a shooting chance in the opponents circle? If only he had stayed where he should have been, grazing peacefully in his own half none of this would have happened

Magpies approached the second half in a more positive way and as would be expected fitness told. (Please note when it was Joe's turn to go on the bench there was no-one on the pitch between the age of twenty two and forty two.) At last corners were converted and life became a whole lot easier. Goals came from Jon Wells and the rejuvenated but not totally recovered Roger Kent.

Thanks go to Eric, who went in goal as Murray was unavailable, and did not touch the ball in play throughout the game.

Sprowston 1sts 2 – 4 Harleston Magpies 2nds

Magpies came to Sprowston expecting a tough physical match against their closest rivals, but started the match well and dominated the first 20 minutes of the game. Magpies continued to create chances, with Anouska Hipperson finding Krystal Bishop in the D, who neatly slapped the ball into the right hand corner of the goal, for Magpies to take the lead. Sprowston made a quick break and found the back of the net after a neat passing move. They pressed Magpies back into their own half and forced a penalty corner, which lead to their second goal. Magpies were shaken by this second goal and worked hard to create a short corner. Sprowston failed to clear and Krystal Bishop netted her second with a reverse stick sweep, to even the scores at half time.

Magpies came out strongest in the second half, with Anouska Hipperson leading the attack. Kiira Wooltorton played an excellent ball into the Sprowston D, for Keira Booty to confidently finish and for Magpies to regain the lead. Both teams became frustrated with play in the second half, Sprowston were first given a green card for a tackle and then Magpies' Anouska Hipperson was unlucky to be given a green card for a tackle from behind. Sprowston were then punished for not retreating after a free hit was awarded, leaving them to see out the match with 10 players. Magpies were again controlling play, moving the ball around well and creating a lot of chances. They sealed their win after a scrabble in the D, Lucy Whiting was the quickest to react to a loose ball.

Magpies go into their next fixture confident and with their 100% winning record intact.

Beccles 2 - 1 Magpies Ladies IV

After drawing with Beccles at the beginning of the season, Magpies knew a better result was required this time around if their Premier League status was to remain intact next season. But facing Beccles away from home, following their previous three good results, Magpies knew a tough match was in front of them.

The opening moments saw Beccles take the initiative, attacking quickly and making progress into Magpies' defensive third, and Beccles soon won a short corner. Magpies defended well though, and were then able to keep possession and settle themselves into the match. Play was evenly balanced for the first twenty minutes, Magpies had some shots on target and Beccles had a one on one with the 'keeper but saw their shot go wide. It was the home side, however, that broke the deadlock mid-way through the half, but Magpies came back strong equalising from a Sarah Legg short corner strike.

The second half found both teams desperate to take all three points and the intensity and effort increased. Again it was Beccles that went in front, scoring early in the second half, but Magpies continued to push on with Laura Schultheiss, Kay Dennis, and Georgi Scott creating chances on the forward line. And when a ridiculously bad tackle, more suited to the rugby pitch, came in from a Beccles defender, the away side were awarded a penalty flick, but unfortunately Legg shot wide. Magpies continued to search for the equaliser, with Emily Parsons impressing on her debut, but could not find the back of the net. Their third win of the season remains elusive for Magpies, but it must come soon if they are to avoid relegation.

LADIES' 2NDS WIN AGAIN IN MIXED WEEKEND

Last weekend was a mixed one for the club. On the debit side the Ladies' 1sts and Men's 1sts lost all their national premier indoor league matches (with relegation the consequence for both teams); the Ladies' 3rds had enough chances for a comfortable home win over Beccles before having to settle for Jemima Jacobs' goal in a 1-1 draw; the Ladies' 4ths went down 5-1 (Sarah Legg) at Weybread to an impressive and smart looking Panthers team (despite an encouraging second half performance) and the Ladies' 6ths lost 4-2 away to Norwich City 5ths.

On the credit side the Ladies' 2nds retained their 100% record by beating Old Buckenham 6-0 away with goals by Kira Wooltorton (3), Keira Booty, Jess Howland and Anouska Hipperson and the Ladies' 5ths kept up their good form with a 3-1 (Saffron Wilford 2, Kara Kilbourn) away win over Yarmouth 2nds. There were also wins for the two junior teams with the Girls' Development beating Pelicans 1-0 away and the Boys' Development beating Tango Titans 4-0 at home with goals by Kieran Peters, Jack Frere-Smith, George Hunt and Harry Haigh.

This coming weekend most of the men's teams return to post-Christmas action led by the 2nds who travel to Colchester (2.00) looking for much needed points under new captain Martin Fields after three successive defeats while Matt Brand and his 3rds, after their first defeat of the season just before Christmas, will be looking to get back to winning ways when they entertain Cambridge City 3rds (2.15) mindful of their 1-1 draw with City earlier in the season. The 4ths are also in need of points and they have a tough home game against UEA (1.45). Meanwhile the 5ths are away to Ipswich 3rds (1.00) looking to make it five consecutive wins; the 6ths entertain Norwich City 5ths (4.00) hoping to maintain their good pre-Christmas form and the 7ths will be determined to chalk up their eighth win on the trot when they travel the short distance to play UEA 3rds (2.30). The Men's 1sts return to outdoor league action on Saturday 4 February and the Boys' Development play again on Saturday week.

Turning to the Ladies the 2nds have one of their toughest games of the season away to second placed Sprowston (11.00); the 3rds entertain Lowestoft Railway (12.30); the 4ths will hope to go one better than the 3rds last Saturday by beating Beccles away (12.00); the 5ths and 6ths are at home to, respectively, league leaders Norwich City 3rds (10.30) and Lowestoft Railways 2nds (12.15) while the table topping Girls Development are away to Watton (10.00). The Ladies' 1sts resume their outdoor league programme on Sunday 5 February. Good luck to all our teams this weekend.

Other news and comment

a) The Ladies' 1sts can take great heart from their performances in the premier division of the national indoor league. Up against the top teams in the country they were only narrowly beaten in all their four games at the weekend while the performances of the Men's 1sts have to be seen against the strength of the opposition with Reading, for example, fielding four of the twelve players who this coming weekend will represent England in the EuroHockey Nations Indoor Championships to be held in Leipzig, Germany. Beeston also fielded two of the twelve in addition, like Reading, to other England internationals. In their pool matches England, managed by Andy Halliday (a top class indoor player in his day) and captained by Glenn Kirkham, play Netherlands and Czech Republic (Friday) and Russia (Saturday) followed by the cross-over matches or semis on Saturday with the final on Sunday. It is good luck to England who also include ex-Magpie Richard Alexander (Surbiton).

b) The U16 Girls had a good workout for the national indoor finals on 21/22 January when, without Sarah Brook (with the 1sts) and Holly Baker (injured), they came second in Sunday's friendly tournament at Brentwood.

c) The U18 Boys have been drawn to play Saffron Walden away on Sunday 5 February in the 4^th round of the EHB Cup when it is to be hoped that James Baker will match or better his six-minute hat trick in the 3^rd round 9-0 victory over IES! On the following Sunday the U18 Girls play Havering at home in the 2^nd round of the EHB Plate and on the same day the Men's Over 50s entertain Reading in the quarter-finals of the EHB Masters Cup.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES INDOOR REPORT

Harleston Magpies Ladies returned to Bristol for the second weekend of Indoor Hockey in the Premier League. Magpies had a tough fixture list in front of them as they had to play three of the top four Indoor sides in the country namely Bowdon Hightown, Reading and Leicester with the fourth match against Clifton.

In the opening match on Saturday Bowdon Hightown started well and were soon 3-0 in front. Magpies made a great fight back to pull the score back to 3-2. Unfortunately in a five minute spell in the second half they allowed Bowdon to pull away to 5-2 and from then on it was a difficult situation. However Magpies pulled another goal back to make it 5-3. The goal scorers were Frances Burrell 2 and Hannah Palmer.

In their second game against Leicester the opposition made it very difficult for Magpies with their press, but at half time the score was 0-0 and Magpies were very much in the game. Magpies were creating chances but they came up against a Leicester goalkeeper who was in tremendous form as she smothered a number of one on one chances. Finally Leicester ran out 3-0 winners late in the second half.

At 9.00am start on Sunday morning Magpies came up against a very strong Reading team, but produced a tremendous performance to nearly snatch a shock result. Reading quickly took the lead with a smart goal but Magpies bounced back with two exceptional goals themselves to take a 2-1 lead. Magpies took the lead again at 3-2 before Reading drew level at 3-3. With seven minutes left the result was hard to call but Reading snatched two late goals to get out of jail. The goal scorers were Sarah Brook 2 and Emma Lee-Smith.

In the final match against Clifton Emma Lee-Smith was unable to play because of injury leaving Magpies with just three forwards. Magpies were 1-0 up at half time after Charlotte Harrison scored following a good run from Sarah Brook. In the end the legs went despite a tremendous effort from Hannah Palmer, Charlotte Harrison and Sarah Brook up front.

So Magpies return to Division 1 having had a great experience playing the top teams in the country and producing some exceptional performances.

For their first fixture of the New Year Ladies 5ths travelled to Gorleston for a League fixture against Yarmouth.

The home side started strongly and deservedly took the lead with a well taken early goal. Magpies gradually worked their way back into the game and were rewarded when Saffron Wilford converted a penalty corner.

Magpies defended well in the second half with Player of the Match Laura Davidson ably supported by Molly Alexander, May Bowden and Janet Brown. Saffron scored her second and Kara Kilbourn added the third after a good cross from Sophie Long. Magpies survived some late scares with Janet clearing two off the line and Jess Harvey in goal making a good save.

Magpies Under 16s Indoor

Following their success at the East Club Championship Magpies played a further tournament at Brentwood and managed to finish in 2nd place.

A 1-0 defeat against eventual winners Old Loughts was the girls only defeat in between convincing wins against Bishop Stortford 2-0, Havering 4-1, Greens 4-0 and Chelmsford 5-0.

This was ideal preparation for their forth coming National Finals Weekend which will take place at Wolverhampton on Sat/Sun 21st/22nd Jan.

In their first match after the Christmas break Magpies travelled to Watton with the aim of maintaining their unbeaten record from the first half of the season. Magpies started comfortably with some strong attacking play down the right wing with Holly Baker, Lucy Chubbock and Emily Brown stringing together short sharp passes around the opposition. Magpies had many opportunities to take the lead with strong shots on goal, this pressure deservedly led to a few short corners and Magpies capitalised quickly with Kira Wooltorton striking two of these short corners clean into the goal. The team continued to press hard and after some great passing from the defence and midfield, Keira Booty received a powerful ball through the opposition's defence and skillfully placed the ball into the goal. With Magpies' spirits high and half time approaching, the confident patterns of play around the pitch continued leading to Tania Pendreich hitting the ball into the circle, where Jess Howland was on hand to round the keeper to score the fourth goal of the game.

In the second half Magpies were hungry for more goals but Old Buckenham started to apply more pressure by pushing their forwards higher up the pitch but the defence held firm and Magpies soon got back on form. With man of the match Holly Baker putting in a solid performance at right half, she helped to create more chances for the team with some strong link up play keeping the pressure on the Old Buckenham defence resulting in more attacking short corners. With Kira Wooltorton on form she soon scored another goal completing her well deserved hat trick and Anouska Hipperson grabbed Magpies sixth goal of the game reacting quickest to a deflection off the goalkeeper's pads at close range.

Special mention goes to Flora Marfleet for actually touching the ball, not once but twice, for the first time in three matches.

Next week Magpies are away from home facing their closest rivals Sprowston in what promises to be a tough match.

Magpies knew they needed to start well, and not allow Panthers to control the game, and the home side did enjoy some very early possession. But it wasn't long before Panthers skill and movement off the ball came to the fore, with the away side progressing quickly into the Magpies D, pressurising the home defence, and made the breakthrough through a somewhat softly conceded goal from close range. Magpies fought back, winning a short corner, and it was only a diving save to the 'keeper's right that kept out Sarah Legg's strong strike. Panthers then truly started to assert their authority on the match, looking to keep their position at the top of the table, and a brilliant solo run ended in the away side doubling their lead. Two more goals from Panthers before half time took them confidently into the break.

The second half saw Magpies put in a much better performance, and they got a goal back, with Sarah Legg striking brilliantly from the top of the D after winning a short corner; a deserved goal for the centre defender. Magpies continued to fight , and felt they were very harshly treated when Hannah Booty was given a yellow card for a high stick in the D; with Panthers competently converting the resulting penaly flick. Magpies' defence held out for the rest of the half, and the team continued to push forward with Sarah Legg, Kathryn Bullen and Kay Dennis all forcing good saves from the Panthers 'keeper. 5 - 1 the final score.

Magpies must be pleased with their battling performance, they never gave up, even when down to 10 players. But credit to Panthers, they were simply a class act.

OVERDUE TRIBUTE TO OUR UMPIRES

I start this first Musings of the year with best wishes to all readers for the 12 months ahead and with a long overdue tribute to our umpires, both visiting and club. Whether we be players or touchline experts (who have yet to get a decision wrong!) we are in their debt. We are particularly lucky at Magpies to have a healthy list of members who are prepared to help out with this vital task be it on an occasional or regular basis. Those in the former category quite often officiate before or after playing in their own match and those in the latter category, who include Irene Bicker, David Brown, Vaughan Dearling, David Johnson, John Pestell, Jeremy Podd and John Snelling, look after two (or even three) games a day on occasions. Our thanks are due to all our umpires and to Jose Tibbenham who organises our umpire coaching courses and to Alan Jones of the NHUA for his help with the assessing and grading of our umpires.

Since the last Musings it is congratulations to –

a) Debbie and David Francis on the birth of William Edward on Wednesday 21 December. I hope we will soon see William at Weybread. It is also congratulations to grandparents Nick and Shirley and John and Janet.

b) Everyone who on Saturday 17 December organised or supported the highly successful fun games which raised £780 in support of the Bethany Whipps Trust Fund. Among the 53 players who turned out it was good to see several friends and former team-mates of Craig making a temporary return to the game including Val Tolhurst who lasted several minutes despite his long-term injury; Andy Smith who ended up on his backside in the opening 30 seconds before playing as well as ever and Mark Lewis, who despite a dodgy back, managed a cartwheel after his goal! Another highlight of the afternoon was seeing Joel Nelson scoring his first goal of the season – past his own 'keeper!

c) The U18 Boys on finishing second in the East Indoor Championship on Sunday 18 December thereby reaching the national finals to be played on Saturday/Sunday 21/22 January.

Other news

a) The Ladies' 1sts and Men's 1sts are back in national indoor league action this weekend in Bristol and Loughborough respectively where both teams will hope that they can build on their encouraging performances over the first weekend of the competitions in December and produce the wins they need to retain their respective premier division status.

b) The other Ladies' teams return to outdoor league action this Saturday led by the 2nds who are away to Old Buckenham (11.30) looking to retain their one hundred percent record. In home action will be the 3rds who play Beccles (12.15) and the 4ths who entertain Panthers (2.15). Good luck to all our teams in action this weekend including the Boys' Development who are home to Tango Titans (12.30).

c) The Durham University 1^st teams pay their annual visit to Weybread on Tuesday 10 January for second half of the season warm-up matches. Please see the website for start times.

d) Tickets (£12 each including food and drink) for the Not the Cheese and Wine! (Saturday 28 January) are on sale at the clubhouse bar. PLEASE COME!

I am sorry to end with the very sad news of the death of HMHC Vice-President Mrs Mary Whiteman. Our condolences on their great loss go to husband Frank, son Steve and all members of the family. Mary was a very keen Magpie and was a regular spectator at Weybread with Frank.

Magpies faced their 13th game of the season at home to Loddon hoping to maintain their unbeaten record. Magpies started strongly with high intensity putting early pressure on Loddon's defence. Player of the match Annouska Hipperson worked tirelessly to create many chances however the Loddon goalkeeper denied her any goals this week. With the loss of Lauren Barber, Arianne Dyball stepped up to play her third second team game this season along with Keira Booty who joined the team after an injury. Krystal Bishop opened the scoring being first to react after both Holly Baker and Lucy Whiting had delivered many quality passes in to Loddon's defending Circle . Kira Wooltorton was unlucky when a superb struck goal after a well taken free hit was surprisingly disallowed. Krystal scored her second goal with Emily Brown adding another from a tight angle after using her pace to beat Loddon's defence leaving the score line at 3-0 at half time.

Magpies maintained their high work rate in the second half with the defence staying strong and rarely troubled. Krystal added another goal to gain a well deserved hatrick. Alongside Kira, Lucy Chubbock continued to use her tight stick skill to put relentless pressure on the Loddon team. Flora Marfleet in goal had no worries failing to touch the ball for a second week. The team now go into the christmas break winning 13 from 13 and are determined to carry on their hard work in the new year.

Last Saturday was the coldest day of the season so far at Weybread but the pitches were playable for most of the day despite the heavy overnight frost. The Girls' Development got the ball rolling at 10.30am by returning to winning ways beating Yarmouth 3-0 and they were followed on the water-based by the Ladies 2nds who posted their 13th win from 13 games with a comfortable 4-0 win over Loddon. For the second week running goalkeeper Flora Marfleet didn't touch the ball but she still came off the pitch as cheerful as ever. It was then the turn of the Men's 2nds and they lost 2-1 (Jaik Mickleburgh) to Crostyx in a match they could well have won if their penalty corner routine had been more efficient. Meantime on the other pitch the Ladies' 5ths were back to winning ways, after their rare defeat the previous week, by beating Sprowston 2nds 3-1 and the Men's 5ths were coming from behind to beat Lowestoft Railway 2-1 with goals by the deadly duo of Roger Kent and Jon Wells. This was a really good win for Eddie Thorne and his team as they had lost 6-1 in the away fixture earlier in the season.

Next up were the Ladies' 4ths and after a run of seven successive defeats they triumphed over Magpies' 3rds by the only goal of the game scored by Kathryn Bullen. In the last two games at Weybread the Ladies' 6ths secured a welcome point by drawing 1-1 (Clemmy Ardley-Forder) with Old Buckenham 2nds while the match between the Men's 7ths and Pelicans 3rds was abandoned after 45 minutes due to frost with our team winning 2-0. Meanwhile away from home the Men's 3rds were going down for the first time this season losing 4-1 to Rutland (even FC Barcelona lose sometimes!); the Men's 4ths were losing 1-0 at half time when their match against North Walsham was abandoned due to the pitch conditions; the Men's 6ths were securing a good 4-1 win over Sudbury 4s and the Boys' Development were going down 2-1 (Harry Haigh) away to Norwich City with the winning goal coming with the last hit of the match. I understand the ever-youthful Stuart Peters was in spritely form at the back for Magpies!

As expected it was a demanding first weekend for our Ladies' 1sts and Men's 1sts in the national indoor premier league at Bristol and Loughborough respectively with both teams losing all their four matches despite giving some encouraging performances. The best news from the weekend was that the two players involved in an accident on their way to Loughborough on Friday night were only shaken and not badly hurt.

a) To the U16 Girls, and the management team of David Brook and Nigel Wooltorton, on winning the East Indoor Championship at the University of Essex on Sunday thereby qualifying for the national finals to be held over the weekend of 21/22 January. Please see the website for a detailed report of this fine achievement. 'Well done' to the U16 Boys who finished third in their event.

b) All our outdoor team captains for fielding full teams last Saturday when there was a shortage of players due especially to indoor demands.

c) Martin Fields who has taken over the captaincy of the 2nds in succession to Simon Hipwell following the elevation of Simon to the 1st team squad. Martin's contact details are on the website.

d) Leigh Sitch on winning the £25 first prize in the recent Squares Board raffle which raised £115 for club funds. 'Thank you' to everyone who bought tickets.

a) Nigel and Sue Bedingfield (sponsors and managers of the club's excellent website) and their ex-Magpie sons Logan and Kalun are Taekwondo black belts and all have had great success this year in British and National tournaments winning gold and silver medals in sparring and pattern competitions.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES INDOOR REPORT

Harleston Magpies Ladies return to the Indoor Premier League after a few years absence was never going to be easy, especially with six players misssing from the team that won promotion so convincingly 12 months ago.

In their opening match on Saturday against Trojans Magpies started tentatively which in the end proved to be their downfall. After going 3-0 down Magpies started a late come back with two goals from Angie Wheelhouse and should have had a third if the umpire had not awarded a penalty corner as the ball crossed the line. However Magpies had left it too late.

In their second game Magpies lost 3-0 to Sutton Coldfield but with a much improved performance and were only let down by their inability to finish good situations.

On Sunday the quality of the opposition continued to get harder. Magpies took an early lead through Angie Wheelhouse against Slough, but Slough quickly responded with two goals. Two well taken penalty corners in the second half helped Slough run out 5-1 winners. In the afternoon Magpies played a strong Canterbury side and found themselves 3-0 down early in the first half. Magpies responed well with a great fighting performance to ensure that no more goals were conceded before half time. In the second half Magpies battled away with great spirit but in the end the quality of the opposition was too strong as Canterbury added two more goals.

Magpies were always fighting against the odds, but they showed great spirit and skill as they kept going right to the end, much to the appreciation of the neutrals in the crowd.

Louisa Greenacre as stand in Captain led the team well. Three players namely Hannah Palmer, Jess Howland and Lauren Barber all made their Indoor National League debuts starting at the highest level and did well.

Squad: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Lisa Griffin, Katrina Warnes, Lauren Barber, Bryony Lund, Charlotte Harrison, Sarah Brook, Angie Wheelhouse, Jess Howland and Hannah Palmer.

The Premier League Indoor returns on Jan 7/8 when Magpies play Reading, Leicester, Clifton and Bowdon Hightown.

Magpies started with 5-2 win v Saffron Walden (goals by Kira Wooltorton, Holly Baker 2 and Sarah Brook 2)

Then excellent performance to overwhelm Canterbury 7-1 with 2 goals by Sarah, one each from Catriona Mciver and Emily Brown and a superb hat trick by Holly Baker.

Magpies then played an almost perfect indoor performance to beat Ipswich 5-0 thanks to a hat trick of penalty corners by Sarah and further goals by Holly and Lizzie Jones.

Magpies now knew that they had qualified for the Nationals but still had to play Old Loughts to decide 1st / 2nd place in the East. Magpies started this very physical game slowly to be 3-0 down at half time. However, a great final effort in the second half saw Sarah score from 3 more penalty corners. A frantic last few minutes saw keeper Ellie O Sullivan pull off a couple of vital saves to ensure Magpies finished 1st with 10 points. Old Loughts were 2nd with 8 points and Ipswich 3rd with 7pts.

Other squad members not mentioned above were Catherine Ridley, Katherine Kilbourn, Saffron Wilford and Arianne Byball.

BETHANY WHIPPS' TRUST FUND

The above fund was established following the tragic death of Bethany's father, Craig, in July. Members will know that Craig was a popular and keen Magpie and following suggestions from his former teammates a fund raising afternoon in aid of the fund is being held at the club on Saturday 17 December. This will take the form of two or more social matches starting at 2.00pm with match fees and any other donations going to the fund. Both men and women members, including those home from university, will be very welcome. If you would like to take part (bringing a coloured shirt in addition to your club shirt) please contact James Goodson (bickyjimjim@gmail.com) or Rob Goodson (robertgoodsontwin@googlemail.com) as soon as possible.

In some ways the most interesting match at Weybread last Saturday involved the defeat of the Men's 2nds who lost their 100% winning home record (to go with their completely opposite away record) by going down 5-4 to league leaders City of Peterborough 2nds. To put it mildly, after a promising start, we were verging on the awful as we found ourselves 5-1 down at the break following some early Christmas presents to the visitors. All we had to show on the plus side was a fine strike by David Francis but in the second half the team came out determined to do better and goals by Martin Fields (following a good run and shot by Robbie Kinsella) and two penalty corner strikes by Will Blyth put the team on the verge of the point their fight back deserved but they were denied by a solid spell near the end by the visitors. More of this fighting spirit will be needed at home this Saturday against Crostyx (2.15) if the team is to secure the three much needed points just before the Christmas break.

Earlier in the day at Weybread the Men's 5ths beat the 4ths 2-1 with goals by Will Main and Chris Thornton after Elliott Ashurst had put the mainly youthful 4ths ahead early in the second half. In a game played in a competitive but good spirit the 5ths were able to make their experience and strength count in a third consecutive win which has consolidated their fifth place in the league. Meantime the Girls' Development were going down for the first time this season losing 2-0 to a strong Norwich City team and the Boys' Development, coached by the ever modest Andy Bedwell, were beating Norwich Dragons 6-3 with goals by Harry Haigh (2), Soloman Barker (2), Ollie Sharp and Jack Frere-Smith.

After assisting Robert Stimpson and Kirstin Cumming to clear a seriously blocked drain I was able to enjoy the Ladies' 2nds secure their 12^th win from 12 games with a comfortable 4-0 win over third placed Ipswich 3rds with goals by MOTM Krystal Bishop, Lucy Whiting and Anouska Hipperson (2). Goalkeeper Flora Marfleet was cruelly but amusingly named DOTD for not touching the ball once in the game and to make matters worse she was also required to pay her match fee!

The final home game of the day between the Men's 7ths and Dereham 5ths was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of Dereham club member Phillip Goillau who so sadly died in the recent Norwich Half Marathon. The match was won 6-3 by the 7ths who after building up a commanding 4-0 win missed the calming presence of their absent skipper Murray Graham and midfield general Peter Dolton as Dereham hit back in the second half before the home team ensured victory for the seventh successive week. This Saturday the 7ths are at home to second placed Pelicans 3rds (4.00).

Away from home there was little to cheer as four of our Ladies' teams went down to defeat before the news came through that the Men's 6ths had secured a good point drawing 1-1 away to Bury St Edmunds 3rds and the Men's 3rds, and league leaders, had beaten Norwich City 2nds 4-3 with a late goal - and his first of the season - by Kevin Ridley. 'Cometh the hour, cometh the man!' I am reliably informed that Norwich City hit back and scored twice, after Jaik Mickleburgh's opening goal, while Quentin Baynes was taking his turn on the bench (!) and before Gavin Cole put Matt Brand's team ahead again with another two goals in his prolific season. This coming Saturday the team is away to Rutland (2.30) who they beat 3-1 at home in late September.

This weekend sees the start of the national indoor league with the Ladies' 1sts, after their second place in last Sunday's East Championship in Cambridge, playing in the daunting Premier League at UWE in Bristol while the Men's 1sts have an equally demanding four matches at Loughborough University. Good luck to these teams and all our other teams in action this weekend including the U16 Girls in the East Championship in Colchester on Sunday. Other news and comment

a) It is thanks to everyone who supported last Saturday's Tombola by giving prizes and/or buying tickets. The event raised £253 to help fund the activities of the Youth Committee. It is also thanks to everyone who attended the Ferret Racing and Bangers and Mash Evening which made a profit of nearly £300 for club funds. Special thanks go, of course, to Malachy and Helen de Lacy and their furry friends for a really fun evening. Finally, it is 'thank you' to all members who helped to run these events.

b) Congratulations to the U12 Boys who won last Sunday's Rudd's Minis at Gresham's winning their four matches with a total of 32 goals for and none against!

Magpies 7ths v Dereham 5ths

Saturday 3rd December

In the last couple of weeks we have beaten top and 2nd in the league, this week we faced 3rd from bottom, so in theory much easier opposition. Only 2 substitutes on the bench this week, Captain Murray away and Dolly away, the latter presumably still recovering from his MOTM performance 1 week ago. This also meant Chopper deputising in goal and less banter on the pitch.

Magpies started well, passing the ball and creating opportunities that were squandered. Dereham were then allowed back into the game as our passing deserted us. After about 20mins however, Eric did finally break the backlines of Dereham, and put the ball in the goal. Soon after Roger Kent managed to persuade the ball over the line after using his presence to make the keeper decide that he looked better lying down with Kent on top of him. The half was completed with a short corner which was dispatched perfectly by Jon Wells, his usual power and accuracy returning. 3-0 half time.

The 2nd half carried on in the same vein, magpies playing in a very disjointed fashion, with all players responsible for poor passing and giving possession away easily. This is where Chopper came in handy! He was always in the way when required to be, covering his angles well and being verbal towards his defenders. His match performance was by far the best in my opinion of any of his team mates.

Eventually Magpies managed a 4th goal scored by Ian. Dereham decided to have a go at this point, and with defending being slightly weak, they smashed in their 1st. 4-1. Magpies tried to play, but passing was still a miss. Eventually after good work down the right by D.Blackmore, a 5th goal was squeezed in at the post, off the keepers pads from about 3inches by Magic, (and yes roger, I am claiming it). Shortly after this, Magic was moved to left back. Unfortunately it wasn't long with Miller not paying attention followed by a poor pass, that led to a Dereham goal, 5-2. This seemed to kick start the team into better hockey, as we started to play the best hockey of the entire game, ending in good work by Bardi, interlinking well with Wells, eventually dispatched into the goal by Joe, from his usual range. There was still time for another surprise and Dereham got their 3rd goal. Final score 6-3.

This was far from a good performance by any stretch of the imagination. However, a win is a win, 7th on the bounce for this team. Next week against a team above Magpies, team defending will have to be back to its normal frugal status.

Ladies 2nds Match Report

This week Magpies were playing Ipswich at home in what promised to be a closely fought match with Ipswich third in the league, having only lost two matches. Magpies were up for the challenge of keeping their 100% record in tact and started strongly winning an early short corner. After a couple of attempts at the short corner routine, the new tactics paid off when Krystal Bishop deflected the ball over the keeper's foot putting the home side 1-0 ahead. Magpies kept the pressure up, knowing that the second goal was crucial, and performed some excellent linked play from Krystal Bishop, Kira Wooltorton and Emily Brown creating many chances that the team were unfortunate to convert into another goal. However, Ipswich managed a quick break into the Magpies own half, but Magpies' strong defence of Frances Taylor, Siobhan Wooltorton and Georgia Pearson confidently cleared the ball. Magpies stayed alert and an outstanding ball from Lauren Barber into the opposition's circle and a sneaky touch on the ball from Lucy Whiting lead to Magpies' second goal of the game, finishing off the first half.

The second half of the game started very evenly and even though it was clear that both teams were becoming tired and worn out, they both powered through. 20 minutes into the second half, Magpies gained control of the game again with the ball being maintained in Ipswich's half. Anouska Hipperson and Jess Howland worked well together placing the ball into the circle where Lucy Whiting was unlucky to miss the ball with her impressive dive, showing her full commitment to the team. Determined to keep a clean sheet, Magpies continued to pressure the Ipswich side and the third goal came from an outstanding shot from Anouska Hipperson. More even play continued as both teams tired, but this was soon followed by a great run down the right and a brilliantly crossed ball from Emily Brown. Anouska Hipperson was positioned correctly leading to Magpies' fourth and final goal of the game. Magpies continued to work through the game right up until the final whistle.

Player of the match was awarded to Krystal Bishop for her continuous efforts throughout the game.

EAST WOMEN'S INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT CAMBRIDGE

Harleston Magpies Ladies finished second in the East Indoor Championship at Cambridge. This Tournament was a useful warm up prior to playing in the Indoor National League Premier Division at Bristol next weekend.

Magpies made a promising start against Chelmsford with some excellent defending and early in the second half Magpies were 3-0 up with goals from Sarah Brook, Bryony Lund and Hannah Palmer. Two goals from Chelmsford gave them a slightly flattering score line but Magpies played out time comfortably.

In the second game Magpies lost a close game 3-2 but Magpies had every chance of drawing level. Magpies did not defend very well in the first half and Lisa Griffin in goal was called upon to make some excellent saves. From 3-1 down Magpies produced a strong second half performance and had enough chances to level the scores with goals from Hannah Palmer and Sarah Brook. Magpies hit the post and failed to score from a penalty flick.

Against Old Loughtonians Magpies produced a spluttering performance but eventually came out 4-2 winners with goals from Angie Wheelhouse, Hannah Palmer, Sarah Brook and Jess Howland.

In the final game Magpies ran out comfortable 2-0 winners against St Albans with Angie Wheelhouse and Sarah Brook scoring the goals.

UEA started the game very strongly playing good open hockey which Magpies found difficult to contend with. Jess Harvey in goal kept Magpies in the game making several fine saves before UEA took a well deserved lead.

The game changed in the second half with Magpies having the majority of the play whilst UEA looked dangerous on the break but defenders Laura Davidson and May Bowden nullified any attacks. Midfielders Sophie Meynell-Anderson and Player of the Match Nicole Eaves worked tirelessly to help create chances for forward Sophie Long, Emily McCluskey Harriet Underdown and Imogen Meynell-Anderson but Magpies could not find the equaliser.

BAD WEEKEND FOR SOME

There is no denying that last weekend was a bad one for three of the club's senior teams, namely the Ladies' 1sts, Men's 1sts and Men's 2nds who all lost. Our other senior teams fared better with the Ladies' 2nds and Men's 3rds both gaining deserved victories while the Ladies' 3rds were gifted three points as Dereham 3rds were, unfortunately, unable to raise a team.

The Ladies' 1sts, away to second placed St Albans on Saturday, went down to a fourth successive goalless defeat and they now have the daunting task of their return to the National Premier Indoor League to look forward to over the weekends of 10/11 December and 7/8 January in Bristol before returning to outdoor action on Sunday 5 February. They warm up with the East Indoor Championship in Cambridge on Sunday. The Men's 1sts also failed to score in their narrow and undeserved home defeat on Sunday at the hands of City of Peterborough. Despite not being at their best they deserved at least a point as the Peterborough goal was hotly disputed to say the least. On such decisions hang the result of some matches. But we won enough penalty corners to have taken the much needed three points against a Peterborough side which failed to sparkle. On the bright side MOTM Rees Leonard had a fine game in goal and the youthful Tom Graham gave his best performance of the season. Like the Ladies the Men can now concentrate on the indoor game for a few weeks.

On Saturday I had my shortest ever trip to see a Magpies' team in action (before moving on to Weybread) when at the Hewett School in Norwich the Ladies' 2nds were in dominant form beating Norwich Dragons 2nds 7-0. The first goal took some minutes to come but thereafter - with MOTM Emily Brown, Kira Wooltorton and Anouska Hipperson in especially good form – it was only a matter of how many the team would score with touchline estimates ranging from 6 to an optimistic 10! Afterwards with my comments of last week in mind I was reminded that the team did score from a shorty. Well done girls!

When I got to Weybread I was pleased to hear that the Ladies' 5ths had won again (3-0 over Pelicans 3rds) and the Men's 4ths had got a vital 2-1 win over Pelicans 2nds with goals by Toby Williamson (made by Andy Johnson I was reliably informed!) and Neil Toulson bringing back happy memories of his first team days. I was in time to see the Men's 3rds fall behind against Cambridge University 3rds in a 'shaky at the back' spell before two goals by leading scorer Gavin Cole put his side ahead at the interval. The team continued to squander a succession of penalty corners with the home crowd (totalling 4) calling for more variety (our sideline tactics are faultless!) before sweeper Iain Cumming found Phil Cobbald on the edge of the circle with a fine through pass - following a vital save by 'keeper Harry Bamber - and Phil made no mistake. The students' second goal came too late to worry the league leaders. In the late game the Men's 6ths were also deserved winners beating Dereham 4ths 3-2 with goals by Jonathan Payne, Will Johnson and James Smith.

Meantime the Men's 2nds were preserving their 100% record of victory in all their home games and defeat in all their away games by going down 4-1 away to Cambridge University 2nds where Richard Larkin was MOTM for the second successive week. It is to be hoped that the 2nds maintain the admirable part of their record this coming Saturday (2.15) when they entertain league leaders City of Peterborough 2nds. Before then at Weybread the Ladies' 2nds have a stern test against Ipswich 3rds (12.30) looking to retain their one hundred percent record for the season. In other eagerly awaited clashes at Weybread on Saturday the Men's 5ths (after their 3-0 away win against Thetford) entertain the 4ths (10.30) while the Men's 7ths, 3-1victors over IES 3rds, take on Dereham 5ths (4.00) seeking their seventh successive win. In brief

a) It is good luck and best wishes to Daniel Legg and Verity Blyth as they embark on their New Zealand sojourn. They will be missed both on and off the pitch during the next few months.

b) It was good to see Jaik Mickleburgh taking time out from his cricket career to play for the club on Saturday after a gap of some years.

c) Well done to the U18 Boys on beating IES 9-0 last Sunday in the EHB Cup and to the U18 Girls on beating Norwich City 4-0 in the EHB Plate.

d) Good luck to the GB Men's team as they compete in the Champions Trophy starting this coming Saturday in Auckland. In Pool A GB play Pakistan (Saturday), Australia (Sunday) and Spain (Tuesday).

e) Three gentle moans – the amount of bottles and other litter left alongside our pitches; the failure of some dogs to take plastic bags with them while walking the club's grounds and the failure of some of our teams to phone in with their result after playing away. My first moans of the season!

IES 3rds 1 Magpies 7ths 3

Those of us travelling from Norwich were summoned to an early meet with on field captain Bardwell. As expected, this was to give him longer to regale us with his man of the match performance last week (while we were saving our energy for the Over 50s knock out match.)

For those involved in that game last week, today was the second game in a week played on an astro pitch whose designers were unable to use a spirit level.

With IES in second in the league, this was an opportunity for Magpies to further close the gap with the top places though defeat would leave them seven points adrift. A relatively young IES side (though I suppose this could be said of the opposition each week) started very keen and enthusiastic whereas Magpies took a while to move through the gears rather in the manner of an old Morris Minor. Murray in goal was forced into two good saves as Magpies found it difficult to keep possession or clear their lines

Eventually, Magpies forced a short corner this lead to Eric having a shot cleared away by a defenders foot. The resulting penalty stroke was converted. Eventually, there was parity in the possession stakes and the ball was kept rather than given away. The Wells and Kent partnership was aided by Alistair Williamson controlling central midfield.

In the last minute of the first half, Alistair, from a free hit, moved to create a space for a pass into the circle which was played into the goal by Pete Dolton unexpectedly so far up field.

As the second half started it was obvious that the next goal was going to be crucial and it went to Magpies with Eric scoring with a strong shot to the delight of his fan club of daughters.

The game opened out as both limbs and minds slowed. IES gained a goal from a short corner with Murray deceived by the total lack of pace on the shot. Without further alarms Magpies ran out comfortable winners.

There are now five teams at the top of the table separated by just two points with two games to go before the Christmas and New Year break

Harleston Magpies Men's 1st XI vs Peterborough Venue: Weybread Time: 14.15

Harleston hosted Peterborough in their last fixture before the long winter break hoping to build on last week's victory. The side were without Stuart Leate, Simon Hipwell and Mark Stacpoole through work, sickness and injury respectively but welcomed back top scorer Ben Wright. Peterborough had beaten Magpies 8-2 in the previous fixture and the home side were looking to even the score.

Magpies started the brighter and pressed high and hard from the off looking to pressure a potentially shaky defence into a mistake. Their early efforts were rewarded with short corners but unlike last week these were left unconverted and the scores at 0-0. Peterborough started to find their feet in the game and began to exert good pressure of their own. Despite creating some good chances the away sides efforts were rebuffed by the Magpies defence and the game looked to be heading into the break as a stalemate. However with just 3 minutes left in the half a short corner was awarded to the away side. Despite the initial effort being saved, the away side managed to bundle home the ball despite appearing to foul one of the home sides defenders in the process. Magpies were left to regroup at half time and consider ways of getting back into this close game.

The second half started in a similar fashion and Magpies were again in the ascendancy taking the game to their opponents. They pressed hard looking for an equaliser but also had to be aware of the away sides threat on the break. Both sides were able to win short corners and the game started to become more end to end but still the score remained the same. Midway through the second half Magpies had their best chance to equalise when Richard Gill shot following a slip corner move, the goalie got something on the ball but unfortunately Peter Bale contrived to miss from less than a yard with the ball striking his foot instead of his stick to cross the line. Magpies picked themselves up and pressed on but to no avail. At the other end young goalkeeper Reece Leonard had a Man of the match performance keeping Magpies in the game whenever the away side broke and threatened. Late in the game Magpies captain Mark Wheelhouse and his Peterborough counterpart were both sent to the sin bin for an altercation and the second half finished with no more clear chances for either side.

The Magpies side left the pitch very downhearted at not getting anything from a game that should probably have resulted in both sides sharing the points. They must take stock of what has been a difficult first half to the season but lift their heads and focus on the positives including the emergence of some excellent young players and also a return to fitness and performance of key figures. If they prepare well post Christmas the second half of the season has the potential to be very different story.

GIRLS U18 PLATE COMPETITION

HARLESTON MAGPIES 4 NORWICH CITY 0

The first half was a very close match with both sides creating chances and Norwich City having the edge in midfield. Magpies took the lead from a penalty corner after 21minutes when Sarah Legg's penalty corner strike was saved by the goalkeeper, but Lucy Chubbock was on hand to force the ball over the line. Norwich continued to create chances and Jessica Harvey in goal made some useful saves whilst Fiona Mackenzie who played with an injury had a solid game as sweeper.

Magpies played much better in the second half with Tania Pendreich dominant at centre midfield and Jess Howland and Krystal Bishop causing plenty of problems up front. Two goals from Krystal Bishop after 54 and 65 minutes sealed the match and capped a fine individual performance. Lucy Crawford completed the scoring on 69 minutes.

Magpies applied pressure from the start and were rewarded when, Player of the Match, Alice Bamber converted a penalty corner variation. With the forward line of Kara Kilbourn, Emily McCluskey and Sophie Long working well together Kara added a second before the break.

The second half was more open with the defence of Janet Brown, May Bowden, Molly Alexander, Karen Ray and Laura Davidson defending well as a unit. Kara added the third just before the end as Magpies ran out convincing 3- 0 winners.

On Saturday 26th Magpies travelled to Norwich aiming to keep their unbeaten run. Magpies started the game at a tempo that Dragons struggled to compete with and the first 15 minutes was played entirely in Dragons' half. Lauren Barber was unfortunate to have her goal from a short corner harshly disallowed for height but Magpies kept up the pressure and Emily Brown opened up the scoring after a sustained attack from Anouska and Krystal to give us a much deserved lead. Shortly after, Krystal Bishop made it 2-0 with a nice aerial finish to Anouska Hipperson's hard work. Magpies were playing some of their best hockey of the season and the defence of Siobhan Wooltorton and Frances Taylor were relatively untroubled. After another lovely attacking display Krystal crossed into the goal mouth for Emily Brown to deflect in making it 3-0 at half-time. Dragons came out in the second half with renewed determination but after a few minutes Kira Wooltorton, Lauren Barber and Georgia Pearson working tirelessly in midfield stamped their authority back on the game and it wasn't long before Anouska scored her first goal. Her second followed shortly after with a cleanly hit strike. Dragons were looking tired by this time but Magpies superior skill and fitness levels were shining through. Dragons tried to push up and get something from the game but this left them exposed at the back and Catriona MacIver was able to break away to score for Magpies' sixth. An emphatic victory was aptly sealed when Magpies won a short corner, injected by Anouska who was then there to deflect the well struck shot into the goal for her hat trick and Magpies' seventh; the whole team played extremely well with lovely movement and passing throughout all good preparation for next week's match against Ipswich 3s.

Magpies sponsored by Kilbourns.co.uk finished a very demanding month of league action with defeat away at St Albans.

St Albans started the game confidently and moved the ball at speed forcing Magpies to defend in numbers. Before half time St Albans forward Samantha Archer scored two goals to put the home team ahead.

Magpies did improve their performance in the second half and created a number of attacking opportunities which troubled the St Albans defence. Unfortunately Magpies were unable to convert any of these opportunities. A clinical St Albans team extended their lead further before the end of the game by scoring a further three goals.

Magpies do not return to National League East Conference action until February. Until then the team turns their attention to playing indoor hockey. This year sees the team return to the National League Premier Division after a very successful campaign last year winning the first division title.

A ten o'clock push-back at East Point Academy found Magpies facing Lowestoft in a crucial bottom of the table clash.

The early signs were positive for Magpies, with their passing and movement improving from recent weeks, and they enjoyed some good spells of possession in the home side's defensive third. Magpies knew how important the three points were and pushed hard to find the opener, and they won several short corners, but even with some strong strikes from the top, and some differing routines, they could not get the ball across the line. Railway were quick on the break, but the Magpies defence seemed able to cope with the home side's forwards and dispatched the ball away competently. Unfortunately for the away side, Railway were awarded a short corner, and when the ball was not cleared away properly, the home side somehow got it past the 'keeper to go a goal up; and Railway took that lead into half time.

Magpies were desperate to get something from the game and battled hard, but their task was not made any easier when early on in the half they went down to 10 after a harshly awarded yellow card for Vicky Blackmore. The away side continued to fight, and again they had a spell of short corners, with Sarah Legg, Rosie Blackmore and Kathryn Bullen all having shots on target, but it seemed nothing was going to get past the Railway 'keeper. In the final few minutes Bullen was desperately unlucky to see another good attempt fall just outside the far post. And Railway went home with the points.

Credit must again go to Sarah Legg for another player of the match display. Performances are improving for Magpies, but these must be turned into points if they are to keep their place in the Premier League.

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kilbourns.co.uk are away this Saturday against St Albans starting at 1.30 in their final League match before the start of the Indoor season.

At the moment Magpies are going through a difficult spell with three successive defeats and it does not get any easier this weekend when they taken on St Albans away, who are unbeaten and second in the League two points behind the leaders Surbiton.

Fortunately Magpies are still in 6th position but the teams below them have been slowly eroding away Magpies comfort zone and whatever happens on Saturday Magpies will need to improve in the second half of the season, if they are to avoid being dragged into a relegation scrap. Fortunately there is every chance that a number of experienced players could be back in the new year.

However Magpies need to travel to St Albans on Saturday with real belief because despite the prominent position that St Albans are in, they have in recent weeks drawn at home against the bottom team Horsham and last week drew away 0-0 with Old Loughtonians, who are one place from the bottom.

Any result at St Albans would be a positive way to finish the first half of the season. Despite losing to the League leaders Surbiton last week Magpies put in a real fighting performance. They will need the same attitude this week and a much tighter defence.

Magpies To Sign Off With Win?

Magpies returned from Middlesex having convincingly beaten Indian Gymkhana 5-3.This win was achieved without the services of top goalscorer Ben Wright. With injuries and unavailability Magpies travelled with fourteen and this win was therefore even more creditable.

This weekend Magpies play their final game before the mid season break. Peterborough are the visitors to Weybread on Sunday 2.15 push back. The visitors have had a good first half to the season beating the sides in the lower half of the table. Whilst Peterborough can be relied upon to score goals their defence has conceded many goals even against the lesser sides. Magpies visited Peterbough earlier in the season and were subjected to a 8-2 mauling.That day Magpies fielded a much weakened side including a number of young players with little national league experience. For the return visit Magpies welcome back Ben Wright and Mark Stackpoole, but are without Stuart Leate. With a large crowd expected Magpies hope to secure three points which could put them in touch with the group of teams just above them.

For the fourth time this season and with two more to come before Christmas, Magpies 7ths found themselves playing at home at 4pm. Are we only allowed to play after everyone else has gone home and after sunset? Would it be bad for younger and perhaps more impressionable members of the club to see us in action? (Please note in action is two words and not one). Are we the Magpies equivalent of Prince John?

Having said that, looking back at the game, I can see why it was perhaps best that as few people as possible were present. Highlights were two saves by Eric deputising in goal for Murray, a goal by Chopper and another from Joe- I hesitate to call it a shot – from the range it was scored a nudge were be a more suitable description. There was a lot of possession for Magpies that was not used as best it might.

Thanks go to Phil and Kevin for umpiring and for their conversation that helped to pass the time.

Harleston moved into the last eight of the over 50s cup with an efficient rather than sparkling performance. To begin with passes were often underhit on the slow surface but Magpies generally were in control.

The first two short corners each led to goals with Philip Cobbald converting a penalty stroke after his shot was illegally stopped and then Bob Skinner deceiving the defender on the line with the lack of power in his shot after the goalkeeper had saved the initial strike.

The two highlights of the first half were a sideline hit from Keith Alexander from deep in Magpies 25 which managed to travel sixty yards down the pitch without going more than two inches away from the sideline and then in the final minute Jim Stather chased after a through ball, the Tunbridge goalkeeper came from his goal and then convinced the ball would go out of play let it pass him, only for Jim, with all his experience from playing on Denes Oval, to reach the ball a yard out from back line and, first time, score from an absurd angle.

In the second half a fine run and reverse stick flick by Jon Aldridge increased the lead to 4-0. Tunbridge did have the ball in the Magpies net but after a goal had been awarded the umpires consulted and the result was a 16 to Magpies.

By now Tunbrisge were running out of legs and Magpies scored three more in the last six minutes – another corner by Cobbald and Jon Aldridge added two more by robbing players inside the Tunbridge D before shooting home. Surprisingly the players he robbed were in white shirts.

Magpies are now through to the last eight and have been drawn at home against Reading who Magpies played in the HA Cup twenty years ago. Five of those who represented Magpies then are now in the Over 50s squad. This is to be played on February 12th.

MEN'S 1STS GET WHAT THEY DESERVE!

Pride of place just has to go this week to the Men's 1sts for their splendid 5-3 away win last Sunday against Indian Gymkhana. After three successive narrow defeats it was really good to hear that captain Mark Wheelhouse and his team had got the victory their much improved form of recent weeks had deserved. A win over City of Peterborough this Sunday (2.15) at Weybread would put the team in an encouraging position going into the long mid-season break and would help to make up for the heavy defeat at Peterborough at the end of September.

Before the above victory I was intending to headline the Men's 5ths for their fine comeback from 2-0 down to beat Norwich City 3rds 3-2 at Weybread on Saturday. In the second half they played some really impressive flowing hockey and two goals from Chris 'Of course I scored' Thornton and one from Deben Nelson (brother Joel is concentrating on the creative side of his game this season) gave them a fine victory. It was just as well their annual cake competition and subsequent devouring of the exhibits was after the match!

Earlier on Saturday the Ladies' 2nds, without the injured Keira Booty, made it ten wins from ten matches but they had to work hard for their 3-0 victory over Dereham 2nds - who played far better than their lowly league position would suggest - with goals by Krystal Bishop, Emily Brown and Tania Pendreich. Manager Nigel Wooltorton does not need to be told by supporters (but he was nevertheless!) that his team's penalty corner routine leaves room for improvement. Even earlier in the day the Ladies' 5ths won yet again coming from behind to beat Norwich Dragons 3rds 2-1 with both goals scored by captain Shirley McAllen who continues to lead by example season after season.

The Ladies' 3rds went down 5-0 away to Evergreens blaming the 10.15 start at Holt for at least some of the goals. We must hope that a 12.30 start at home to Dereham 3rds this coming Saturday helps them to return to winning ways! The Ladies' 4ths had no such excuse for their 5-1 home defeat by Norwich City 2nds, after taking the lead through Kathryn Bullen, but at least they had the satisfaction of drawing the second half 0-0. No – I'm not going to call it a game of two halves!

Meantime the Men's 2nds, with goalkeeper Marc Lloyd needing to be in good form, were recovering from conceding a controversial goal at home to Harpenden with a fine strike by skipper Lawrence Baynes and two classy goals by James Baker after his late call up for his national league debut the next day against Indian Gym. Other victories on Saturday were recorded by the Girls' Development who beat North Walsham 7-0 (7 wins and one draw now for the team from their eight games with just two goals conceded), the Men's 6ths who beat Felixstowe 3rds 4-2 (Jonathan Payne, Jonathan Aldridge, Ollie Tomson and Tom Samuel) and the Men's 7ths. The latter beat league leaders Dereham 4ths 4-2 (David Blackmore (yes!), Joe Walker and Stuart Peters (2)) with captain and goalkeeper Murray Graham being unlucky with the two shots he faced!

On Sunday at Weybread the Ladies' 1sts went down 4-0 to an impressive Surbiton side (coached by former England captain Brett Garrard) for whom ex-England international Chloe Strong was in fine form both in defence and attack scoring two goals. Despite the score line this was a good battling performance by Magpies who matched their opponents for the first twenty minutes of the game and who only conceded once in the second half. Also on Sunday the Men's Over 50s were reaching the quarter-finals of the EHB Masters Cup with their third successive away win (this time at Tunbridge Wells) with another haul of seven goals. England internationals Jonathan Aldridge and Philip Cobbald continued their recent Singapore form scoring three goals and two goals respectively in this 7-0 win. The other scorers were Bob Skinner and Jim Stather.

The club is fielding 19 teams over the coming weekend including the Ladies' 1sts, who face another tough game at St Albans on Saturday (1.30), and five of our youth teams who are in action on Sunday. Please see the Home Page of the website for the full list of fixtures. Good luck to all our teams.

Dereham 4ths v Magpies 7th

Saturday 19th November

Dereham at the start of the match were top of the league, having not lost a single point to date. Magpies, on a good run of form having won the previous four matches. Dereham free scoring in their previous matches, Magpies extremely tight at the back, having only conceded 5 goals to date. The stats suggested this would be a good game, and so it materialised.

Despite the lack of the two Peter's (Finney and Dolton), deciding to conserve energy for their trip with the over 50's away to Tunbridge Wells, we had two very good replacements, masters of the game in my eyes, Ali Williamson and Stu Peters. The 1st half was characterised by Magpies making good ground forward but often lacking in a finalising pass in or around the D. Followed by Dereham braking with pace, utilising there 4 very young and quick 'youth policy'. This caused many problems, but their shots were never anything to worry about, and only secured one short corner in the 1st half. Magpies on the other hand had at least 4 shorts, and on 3 occassions ending in their keeper saving and us failing to put the ball in the back of the net on the following rebounds.

A tactical position change meant Magic moving from left half to left back and David Blackmore going the other way. This soon had the desired affect. Another short secured, keeper saves and this time Blackmore follows up and calming flicks over the keeper into the net. 1-0 to Pies at half time.

The first 5minutes of the 2nd half were quite strange from a magpies point of view. The stout team defending of the 1st half seemed to disappear and we soon found ourselves 2 goals to 1 down. However, heads were not dropped and Magpies soon upped their game and pressure on the opposition defence. Lots of opportunities were created and a couple more shorts. Jon Wells coming up for each for his usual striking position from his unusual position of right back. This more relaxed less involved role in the game appeared to effect his usual striking prowess, as I don't remember the Dereham keeper being overly tested by Jon at any time.

Pies got themselves back into the game with a pass from the right dead ball line to the awaiting Joe Walker, from his usual spot about 4 feet out from the goal. Duly dispatched, 2-2. This seemed to have two effects. Rock Dereham and buoyed Pies. Pies continued in their constant pressure, and were rewarded by two well taken goals by Stuart Peters. 4-2. The final 10minutes were all about magpies again closing down players well and defending as a team.

Special note needs to go out to the 3 rotating strikers, Eric, Joe and Chopper. Tireless the whole game with lots of running and good hold up play. And to Simon Bardwell, a new energy appeared over bardy this week, tracking back, running forward, and all timed to perfection. His efforts and energies fed to the rest of the team and what an example he set. Congratulations on his Man-of-the-Match performance.

Harleston Magpies played some excellent hockey as they took a 4-0 half time lead. Issy Knowles completed a first half hatrick, whilst Gina Scottbarber added the other goal. Beatrice Flatt and Katie Crawford played well at the back in the absence of Sandra Elliner. Anna Harrod and Clea Turvill scored in the second half before Issy Knowles scored her fourth to complete the scoring. Eliza Bell and Elle Eglington were strong in midfield.

Harleston Magpies Men's 1st XI vs Indian Gymkhana (away) 20th November 2011 Time: 13.30

Magpies travelled through the mist and fog to West London under the Heathrow flight path to play Indian Gymkhana. The last few weeks have been difficult for Magpies with good performances not being rewarded by any points on the board. Indian Gym have had a mixed first half of the season with some good wins but also some heavy defeats. Magpies prepared well for the match with an overnight stay but were limited to a 14 man squad due to injury which included top scorer Ben Wright. Magpies gave a National League debut to 17 year old James Baker, son of club legend Stuart.

Magpies started the game well and the new away pitch allowed for some flowing moves. During a break into the circle from the right hand side, key man Richard Gill seized on a bouncing ball to smash in a goal past a flailing keeper to give the away side a deserved lead. Unfortunately this lead did not last long as a resurgent Gym drove down the other end and secured a penalty corner that was expertly fired home by Jagdeep Gill (no relation). In the past this may have unsettled Magpies but they reasserted their control and were generally very patient in their build up. On 26minutes it was the turn of another experienced head to put Magpies ahead, when Tristan Baynes delivered a beautiful back hand strike low into the bottom corner from the top of the circle. This was swiftly followed up by a successful penalty corner strike from England junior Elliot Smith, who had taken over flicking duties from the injured Wright. The half closed with Magpies 3-1 up but very aware that one good half of hockey has not been enough recently and Gym would always be a threat after the break.

As expected Gym started the half pressing much higher up the pitch and limiting Magpies time at the back. This however left holes in their already shaky defence and Magpies were able to secure a second penalty corner, which was again dispatched into the net by the promising Smith. Many sides would have thrown in the towel at this point but the Sikh based side do not have this in their nature and were soon bombarding the Magpies back line and using their high skill levels to generate fouls in and around the circle. Despite good effort across the pitch Magpies were guilty of sitting back and inviting pressure and soon it told when a free man was left back post for an easy tap in to make it 4-2. Now in the assurgence the home side pressed on and soon had a man advantage when David Ling missed a tackle in the circle but was judged to have shown intent to foul and was given a 10minutes sin bin. The home side took this opportunity and from some intricate passing in the circle secured their third goal from close range. With the teams only one goal apart the match became an end to end contest with the result difficult to predict. Magpies were pressing and creating lots of chances. They will be frustrated that often their final decision-making in the circle let them down at key moments. At the other end Gym also had their fair share of chances but could not find their way past the Magpies rear guard. With 4 minutes left following a failed Gym attack, man of the match Simon Hipwell combined well with Baynes to give Zeb Knights a tap in at the back post which secured all 3 points leaving the final score as 5-3.

Magpies have played better but got nothing from games this half of the season so were relieved and elated to have collected 3 points from this difficult away fixture. The win puts them only 2 points behind their nearest rivals and will inject confidence when they host Peterborough next week in what promises to be another exciting encounter.

Magpies got off to the worst possible start conceding in the opening minute after a series of defensive errors. The team then fought hard to get back into the game with Player of the Match Sophie Long leading the way. Shirley McAllen equalised with a well struck shot from the edge of the circle.

The second half saw Magpies exerting pressure but Dragons looked dangerous on the break. Shirley scored her second from a penalty corner. After all their hard work Magpies could have only come away with a draw but for an excellent save from GK Jess Harvey right at the end.

Magpies sponsored by Kilbourns.co.uk produced a promising second half performance against the league leaders at Weybread on Sunday unfortunately this was not enough to earn Magpies any points.

Magpies knew that a strong start putting Surbiton under pressure as soon as they received possession of the ball was going to be crucial, to stop the opposition settling and playing their fluent passing game which has allowed them to remain undefeated this season.

Magpies did start well and attacked with conviction, Frances Burrell, Hannah Palmer and Angie Wheelhouse linking up down the right to force a penalty corner. Magpies could not convert the corner and continued to be frustrated by the organised Surbiton defence who worked hard to breakdown Magpies attacking opportunities.

Surbiton won their only penalty corner of the game after 20minutes and took the lead with an accurate strike from Chloe Strong. Two minutes later Abi Robinson was on the end of a fast break from Surbiton and put them 2-0 ahead. Before Magpies could recover Sandra Frankland extended Surbiton's lead further and the away team went into the half time break with a three goal lead.

With another 35mintues to play Magpies had to regain some control and composure at the start of the second half to make sure Surbiton did not continue to extend their lead. The whole team stepped up to this challenge with individual performances improving across the pitch. Ellie Bale and Catherine Cranmer returning to the team for the first time this season soon settled into the high tempo and combined well on the right. Katrina Warnes and player of the match Sarah Brook worked tirelessly on the left to breakdown and frustrate the Surbiton attack.

Unfortunately Magpies were not able to convert the opportunities they had created and it was Surbiton who scored the only goal of the second half when Chloe Strong forced the ball in from a narrow angle. Magpies will be looking to produce a committed and high tempo performance for the full 70 minutes when they travel away to St Albans next week.

Playing at home this week against bottom of the table Dereham, Magpies were out for yet another win to maintain their unbeaten record.

Within the first five minutes of the game, Magpies found the ball being played dangerously by Dereham in their own half, meaning that goalkeeper Flora Marfleet had to make a crucial save to prevent Magpies from going 1-0 down. Soon enough however, Magpies were on top form and the ball was in the Dereham half with players creating opportunities and gaining repeated short corners. Continuous efforts and excellent linked play down the right hand side won Magpies their fourth short corner of the game with a near miss on the back post. Quick to react to this, Dereham had a fast break winning themselves their first short corner of the game, but Magpies defence stayed strong and confidently cleared the ball back into their attacking half. Yet another short corner was won by Magpies where after some battling, Lucy Whiting assisted Krystal Bishop on scoring the first goal of the game. Soon after, following a harsh decision from the umpire and dispute from other players, Tania Pendreich was given a yellow card towards the end of the first half.

Beginning the second half of the game with only ten players, Magpies had to keep their concentration to stay in the lead. When the team was brought up to eleven players again, Saffron Wilford gained the first short corner of the half. With Lauren Barber striking the ball, Emily Brown was found on the back post to score Magpies' second goal. Before long, Dereham had won themselves a short corner which was lifted into a brave Siobhan Wooltorton and then assertively cleared out of the Magpies half. Great speed from the Magpies' attackers brought the ball into Dereham's half yet again where a reverse stick pass from Lucy Whiting found Tania Pendreich, who deflected the ball into the goal giving Magpies a 3-0 lead. With Dereham fighting back hard, the ball was played around in Magpies half leading to some strong defending from Frances Taylor and Siobhan Wooltorton. However a short corner was soon won by the opposition, but was cleared by the Magpies' defence with assurance. The ball was soon brought back into the Dereham half with the Magpies dominating play and winning more short corners which they were unfortunate to convert into another goal. Determination kept Magpies going strong with Lucy Whiting making a dive at goal in the final two minutes of the game which was saved by Dereham's keeper.

Magpies had their 10th win of the season with Lauren Barber voted as player of the match for her skill and quick reactions throughout the game.

Ladies 3rds match report

Magpies Ladies 3s 0-2 UEA Ladies 1s

2nd place Magpies hosted 3rd place UEA for an early pushback, knowing it was going to be a tough game with only 1 point seperating the teams. UEA started strongly, getting a shot off within 30 seconds, Magpies defence and midfield fought hard to stop the UEA attacks however they kept coming forcing goalkeeper and player of the match Kristina Erith to make multiple saves to keep the home side in it. Magpies managed to get a few breaks and good passing between Georgi Minta, Jemima Jacobs and Rachel Herod saw Magpies break into the UEA 'D' but a good save from the UEA keeper kept Magpies' efforts out of the goal.

UEA had a long spell of possession, ending in an initial save and then another shot, well stopped by Frankie Eaves on the line, however Magpies' luck ran out two minutes before half time and UEA went 1-0 up and took the lead into the break. UEA again came out strongly, and Magpies knew they had to keep fighting if they wanted to pick up even a draw, and kept battling hard against the continuous barrage of shots, but again UEA were rewarded with a goal to finish at 2-0. Magpies should be pleased with their efforts against a strong side that were in the league above last season, and pick themselves up for next weeks game away at Evergreens where they must pick up points to keep themselves in the top 4.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM WEEKEND PREVIEW

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kilbourns.co.uk are at home this Sunday starting at 12.30 against the unbeaten League leaders Surbiton.

Last weekend Magpies lost away 3-0 to third placed Sevenoaks in a score line that does not truly reflect the performance the team produced on the day. It was a much improved performance and they will need to take the same attitude into Sunday's game. Surbiton and St Albans are currently level on points at the top of the League and both are unbeaten. These are Magpies next two opponents in what is a really tough run in to the end of the first half of the season before the Indoor season begins.

Magpies are still in 5th position and most of the results went for Magpies last weekend as they try to keep space between themselves and the teams below them. Fortunately Magpies picked up some crucial home points earlier on which were essential. They have been hit very hard with injuries and illnesses over the last few weeks which have left the squad very stretched. Catherine Cranmer is available this Sunday to add some vital experience and depth to the squad. Ellie Bale may

also be available to join the team on the bench in her first appearance since having a baby.

Surbiton's record is quite impressive to date with six wins and two draws and they are also the leading goal scorers in the League with twenty two goals.

Magpies Travel to Indian Gymkhana

Magpies travel to Middlesex on Sunday to take on Indian Gymkhana. The Indian side will provide a very different opposition to that encountered so far in the league.Whilst Gymkhana occupy a mid table position their last two results have been losses against Old Loughtonians 2-4 and Wimbledon 0-6.Magpies recently losing to both sides by the odd goal gives them an indicator that this game is winnable.

Pete Bale returns to the squad following unavailability through work, Tristan Baynes and Mark Wheelhouse have recovered from injuries ,however Ben Wright misses through an injury. It is disappointing to miss top goal scorer Wright who has been in sparkling form, however the defence will look a great deal tighter with the return of Wheelhouse and Bale.

20 HMHC TEAMS IN WEEKEND ACTION

Last weekend was a very busy and eventful one for the club and over the two days we fielded no less than 20 teams ranging from the Ladies' and Men's 1sts to - and for the first time this season – the U10 Girls 'B'.

The Ladies' 3rds got the ball rolling at Weybread on Saturday when they went down to their first defeat of the season losing 2-0 to UEA before they were followed on the water-based by the Men's 6ths who gave the ball away far too often against an experienced Ipswich 3rds losing a little harshly 6-0. Next up for the game of the day were the table-topping Men's 3rds against their closest rivals Ely City. Simon Robinson saved a stroke before Tiger Brice put the 3rds ahead and after the impressive Ely side scrambled an equaliser Sam Ashurst was on hand to put us back in front. Ely stormed back in an exciting second half and deservedly took the lead before, and with time running out, skipper Matt Brand fired in the equaliser and with the last hit of the game Philip Cobbald, just back from a hot and steamy Singapore, saw his yard-wide shot hit a defender before diverting into the back of the net for three very welcome but slightly fortuitous points.

The Men's 1sts could have done with this sort of luck against Teddington on Sunday when Ben Wright hit a post in the third minute and the bar with a superb reverse stick shot after the interval. However, by then we were two down due in no small part to some accurate long passing by ex-England international Calum Giles. The team, for whom Richard Gill (as ever) and goalkeeper Rees Leonard were in fine form, deserved a draw but all they had to show for their second half hard work and dominance was Stuart Leate's goal which required him striking the ball four times before he could persuade it to pierce the packed Teddington defence!

But back to Saturday where it looked as if the Ladies' 4ths were on for at least one welcome point against Evergreens when Jose Tibbenham put them ahead and when, after the visitors had taken the lead, Sarah Legg calmly converted a penalty stroke but it was not to be as they went down 3-2 to a late goal. Later the Men's 7ths took the field without their inspirational skipper Murray Graham (something about a move of offices taking precedence) but his well oiled machine of a team - big ends, faulty spark plugs and even dip sticks were mentioned after the game - eased past Bury 4ths 4-0 with the final goal a cracker from Joe Walker who collected the ball way out before firing in from the edge of the circle.

Away to Yarmouth the Ladies' 2nds came from behind to maintain their perfect start to the season with goals from the prolific Anouska Hipperson and the in-form Emily Brown while the Ladies' 5ths beat Reepham 5-2 away to continue their impressive season. Meantime the two Development teams were both winning 5-0 while the Ladies' 1sts were again finding scoring goals a problem going down 3-0 away to Sevenoaks. They have another demanding game this coming Sunday (12.30) when they entertain league leaders Surbiton while on the same day the Men's 1sts will be hoping their good form (and a change of luck) will secure them a much needed win away to Indian Gymkhana (1.30). The Ladies' and Men's 2nds – the latter lose away and win at home – have centre stage at Weybread on Saturday. Congratulations to:

a) Jonathan Aldridge and Philip Cobbald who were members of the England Over 50s who won the recent Singapore International Masters. England, who won all their six matches including a 2-1 victory over Australia in the final, scored 29 goals in total with eight coming from Philip and five from Jonathan.

b) The youth committee on hosting last Sunday's very successful U10 and U12 Girls' Minis and to Norwich City on winning the U10 event, to Ipswich 'B' on winning the U12 event and to Magpies 'A', under coach Martin Reader, who came second in the U10s.

c) The U16 Girls who beat Dereham 2-1 and Cambridge City 15-0 last Sunday and who with one match still to be played have progressed to the next stage of the EHB Cup.

Other news and comments in brief

a) There is good news on the medical front concerning two HMHC vice-presidents. Christine Longe is on the mend after her severe setback during recent surgery and Janet Reader is recovering well from her double knee replacement operation. Best wishes to Chris and Janet.

b) As you may have noticed the scoreboard on the water-based pitch has been behaving erratically of late. But please don't blame the highly trained team of operatives. We have not developed the yips and instead we are pointing our fingers at the buttons on the remote!! Hopefully a new remote will do the trick.

c) You may also have noticed that over the last few weeks several bulbs have blown on the water-based. These cost £150 each to replace so if your subscription is still overdue please bear this in mind.

d) This profound comment was overheard at the club over the weekend – 'If we didn't have posts we wouldn't have goals'.

Harleston Magpies Ladies 2nd Match Report

Magpies were going out to defend their unbeaten run once again at Great Yarmouth, after a late start Magpies started with a strong attack and had several attempts on goal early on in the first half, Krystal Bishop relentlessly chasing down the ball causing forced errors in the Yarmouth defence allowing these attacks and increasing the pressure but all were denied by the keeper and defence. After giving away a penalty corner Yarmouth scored from a shot at the top of the circle leaving Magpies trailing 1 : 0 at halftime. After the break Magpies came out fighting and again had several attacks with one resulting in a deflection from the keeper into the path of Anouska Hipperson who`s shot was stopped on the line by a defenders foot giving Mapgpies a penalty flick which was converted by Hipperson to bring the score line to 1:1. Shortly after this another cross and goal mouth scramble resulted in Emily Brown putting away the winning goal and keeping the unbeaten run going.

Man of the match went to Krystal Bishop for her continuous efforts in chasing down the ball against an organised defence.

HARLESTON MAGPIES MINI TOURNAMENT SUNDAY NOV 13TH FOR U12 AND U10 GIRLS

Harleston Magpies hosted their annual Girls Mini Tournament with ten U12 teams and seven U10 teams. Some excellent hockey was played in the warm conditions.

Unfortunately Magpies U12 A team having finished 2nd and 1st in recent Tournaments saved their worst results for their own Tournament. They did not play badly but for some reason just seemed unable to finish off their good work by putting the ball in the net. They were unbeaten but no less than seven 0-0 score lines ensured that they would not be competing for the medals. Their only wins came against Watton and Norwich Dragons. They finished 5th.

Team: Georgina Warren (Capt), Anna Kilbourn, Hannah Dobson, Lottie Summers, Ismay Whittaker, Alice Woollatt, Sophie Child, Mia King, Martha Lawrence and Amelia Preece.

Magpies U12 B team continue to progress the more they play Tournament hockey. It is very hard to compete against A teams but the side did well with four drawn matches. Their best results were drawing against Pelicans and Magpies A. They finished 9th.

Team: Hollie Sewell, Charlotte Johnson, Shannon Hedge, Ellen Harness, Matilda Warde-Adlam, Mia Gower, Abigail Bourne, Amy Hill, Liberty Chatten and Rose Winter.

Harleston Magpies U14 Girls were unfortunate to lose their opening match 3-2 to Norwich City after conceding a late goal. A draw would probably have been a fair result. Gina Scott-Barber and Kara Kilbourn scored the goals for Magpies.

In Magpies second match the hosts Bury ran out 3-0 winners.

Mens 5ths vs IES 1sts

I start this week with an apology to the UEA umpire who visited Weybread last week. Upon reflection it appears that my comments in last weeks match report were both misplaced, a little harsh, and may have taken things a little to far. In fact I should have been extending a thank you to the UEA umpire who had to step in last minute to pick up the whistle as the original umpire pulled out quite late in the day. So, my apologies and thank you for overseeing what turned out to be quite an exciting game of hockey.

Moving on then, and the 5ths travelled to Copleston Sports Centre to face top of the table IES 1sts. Magpies were in no doubt that they were going to face stiff opposition considering IES were relegated from the league above last season and were used to playing at a high level. It was clear from the first whistle that IES were organised and well drilled. Their whole team pressed high up the pitch not allowing any room for error from the visiting Magpies. Magpies struggled to find a rhythm under the constant pressure from IES. That said Magpies battled hard, marking tightly and defending well. The whole team had to work at a very high intensity and fitness was tested but Magpies were up to the challenge. With the pressure that Magpies were under it was only a matter of time before IES made a breakthrough and it came from open play. I must confess that I cannot give you too much detail on the goals scored in the first half as it was all a it of a blur, what I can say is that as the half time whistle blew it was 5-0 to the home side.

The half time talk was positive and Magpies had been defending well. The consensus was to continue marking tight, keep the ball through shorter passes and press IES a bit higher up the pitch. The second half started well and the tactics in the half time talk were followed and Magpies were keeping more of the possesion. George 'The Terrier' Moore picked up his work rate and started hastling higher up the pitch causing the IES backline to rush on the ball. The midfield of Gus, Rob, James, Adam, and Will continued to run hard and on a break away attack Gus struck home a goal to make it 5-1! IES were furious, as this was the first goal they had conceded at home all season. The defence of Eddie, Deben, Robin, and Tim worked very hard and, with the help of midfield, made many goal saving tackles. Steve in goal was under constant pressure and made some great saves during the game.

IES took two more goals in the second half to make the final score line 7-1.

Although a large defeat, Magpies came away with their heads held high. Everyone worked tirelessly as we had a changed squad once again and no subsitutes this week compared to IES's four on the bench which made a huge difference. We were pleased to end IES's home clean sheet record and take a deserved goal.

This week the Mens 5ths host Norwich City 3rds.

Reepham 2 Ladies 5ths 5

Magpies had a late start at Taverham against Reepham running out 5 - 2 winners. In an even first half both teams found it difficult to create chances with good defensive work blocking the attacking moves. Saffron Wilford broke the deadlock with a well struck penalty corner with Reepham equalising from a tight angle just before half time.

Magpies applied pressure in the second half with Sophie Long scoring the second deflecting in a cross from the right. Player of the match Saffron Wilford completed a hat trick of penalty corners and Kara Kilbourn completed the scoring for Magpies. Reepham pulled one back converting a penalty stroke. Good work from Laura Davidson at centre back and Sophie Meynell-Anderson in centre midfield prevented any more chances for Reepham.

Under 16 Girls Go Goal Crazy

Magpies under 16s played 2 more matches in the National Cup competition this afternoon.

The first match vs Dereham saw the opposition defending in numbers in an effort to frustrate Magpies superior skills. After a series of good saves by the Dereham keeper, the breakthrough came following a sweeping move down the right finished off by Georgie Minta. Magpies dominated the second half even more but could not find a crucial second goal. With 7 minutes to go Dereham grabbed a shock equaliser from their only entry into Magpies D. This prompted a determined response from Magpies with Sarah Brook driving the team forward. Another superb move down the right saw Catherine Kilbourn deflect in for a deserved winner.

Magpies then played Cambridge City and really started to cut lose. They raced into a 5 nil lead by half time with goals by Georgie, Sarah, Saffron, Holly (16 years old today) and Frankie. The second half saw Magpies in ruthless mood with a further 10 goals. Saffron completed a hat trick, Jemima scored 4, Kira 2 and Catherine 2 to leave a scoreline of 15-0. The Cambridge keeper actually played well and kept the score down!

These results leave Magpies on maximum points from 4 games and certain qualification for the South East finals later in the season. However, one further game (in this regional group) remains vs Ipswich. Two teams qualify and Magpies will be keen to finish top of their group.

Ladies 1st Team Match Report

Sevenoaks 3 – Magpies 0

Magpies travelled away to Sevenoaks determined to put last week's disappointing performance behind them. Although Magpies again returned home without any points they can be encouraged by producing a very committed and competitive performance.

After a promising start with Hannah Palmer troubling the Sevenoaks defence Magpies were unfortunate not to take the lead, as Holly Baker was ready to put the ball in the back of the net the whistle blew to award Magpies a penalty corner instead.

Sevenoaks confidently transferred the ball in defence and started to put Magpies under pressure with some skilful passages of play. Magpies put themselves on the back foot going 1 -0 down after 11 minutes when Lisa Griffin made a good initial save , Sevenoaks forward Nicola Wood was the quickest to react and lifted the ball past the diving keeper into the back of the net. Following further pressure from Sevenoaks Magpies conceded their second goal of the game just before half time when Jet Van Zalen finished from close range.

Magpies started the second half brightly with Charlotte Harrison and Katrina Warnes on the left and Verity Blyth and Hannah Palmer on the right running purposefully into the Sevenoaks circle forcing Sevenoaks to defend in numbers. Despite Magpies dominating possession for large periods of the second half they were unable to convert the opportunities they created. Sevenoaks sealed their victory with a 3rd goal from Lucy Wood in the 63rd minute.

Magpies demanding run of fixtures continues next Sunday when they face league leaders Surbiton at Weybread.

Magpies Ladies 4th's Hockey Match Report

Magpies Ladies IV 2 - 3 Evergreens

Magpies were hoping that a match at home at Weybread would bring them some much needed luck, and some much needed points to push them up the league table.

Facing Evergreens, renowned for their strong, physical sides, Magpies started the match well, staying calm on the ball, and passing well throughout the team, showing confidence and belief in their ability. The home side were rewarded for their efforts when midway through the half, a well worked move on the forward line with Kathryn Bullen, Kay Dennis and Josie Tibbenham combining well, resulted in a goal, Josie Tibbenham finishing strongly in the D. Evergreens fought back hard, and the match opened out, the play going from end to end, and the away side grabbed the equaliser as Magpies found themselves muddled in the middle of the park. This gave Evergreens confidence, and they scored again, and took their lead into half time.

Magpies felt confident they could get back into the match and pressed forward, winning several short corners after some good work from the forwards, but they could not convert. However, the home side continued to battle hard, and when Kay Dennis was fouled in the D, Magpies were awarded a penalty flick. Centre defender Sarah Legg stepped up to take the strike, and cooly beat the 'keeper, giving Magpies the well-deserved equaliser. Magpies believed the game was theirs for the taking, but Evergreens were not going down without a fight, and just minutes before the final whistle, a brilliant solo run into the D from the away side's centre forward was finished with a superb strike which the Magpies 'keeper could do nothing about, giving Evergreens the three points.

Magpies fought hard, and their performance was muchly improved, and they must keep fighting for their place in the Premier League.
