BRONZE FOR BOYS

After being unbeaten all season the U12 Boys went into the national club mini finals at Cannock HC last Saturday as East champions and with a good chance of returning home with a medal to round off their excellent 2011/12. On a bright, dry day in front of their enthusiastic supporters the team got off to the perfect start with an encouraging 4-2 win in Pool B over Leicester before conceding a very early goal to Bath Buccaneers in their next game from which they never really recovered going down by two goals to one. With no semi-final places for the two pool runners-up this was a considerable setback for Magpies and they had a long wait before their next game which was against Guildford. Just after half time Magpies were two goals to the good and heading for victory before Guildford took advantage of two defensive errors to clinch a draw against the run of play. By now Bath had secured top spot in Pool B and a place in the final (in which they beat Avalon, the other West team, 1-0) leaving Magpies needing to beat Thirsk and Bath to beat Guildford for the East champions to make the 3rd/4th place game. Magpies started badly twice going behind to Thirsk before twice equalising. With time running out Magpies were on the defensive but two late goals secured victory and, with Bath beating Guildford, a place in the bronze medal game against Oxford Hawks. A parent could have been speaking for all spectators when he said he was feeling 'seriously stressed'. I know the feeling!

Magpies looked the better side against Oxford Hawks but with no goals in the two nine-minute halves the outcome all depended on strokes. The first six were all converted and it was now down to sudden death and after Magpies went 4-3 up the next Hawks' stroke was disallowed after the technical delegate intervened to say the striker was too far from the ball at the start of the stroke as suspected by the Magpies' team. However, the Hawks' appeal was upheld with a decision to resume the strokes after the end of the next match. At this point Stuart Peters, the Magpies' coach, sportingly offered to share third place which the Hawks' management gratefully accepted to the general approval of everyone involved including the spectators. In the circumstances it was rightly decided to award the third place medals, presented by England's and GB's Laura Unsworth, to the Magpies' boys who did the club proud throughout the finals.

'Well done' to our team, captained by Archie Winter, for their splendid season; all players having played their part over the months. Congratulations and thanks to Stuart Peters for all his hard work with the team throughout the season and 'thank you' to Richard Larkin for his help as team manager during the finals.

The squad was – Freddie Dixon (GK), Kieran Peters, Sam McCluskey, William Donsworth, Jolyon Summers, David Cadman, Alex Kilbourn, Cameron Woodcock, William Simpson, Archie Winter, Stuart Peters (coach), Richard Larkin (manager).

London Prepares
I hope these brief observations following my visit to the Olympic test event last week might be of interest. With the Olympic Park only a few hundred yards from Stratford Station travel by train has to be a good and possibly best option; the airport-style security checks were irritating but perhaps inevitable; the professional staff and volunteers were very cheerful and welcoming from the station through to the temporary hockey stadium which is a good 10 to 15 minutes walk from the main gate; the sight lines in the stadium are excellent; the blue and pink pitch a gimmick(!); the lack of cover could well be a problem in the event of hot weather during the Olympics (as I found in Holland last year); the catering within the hockey complex left a lot to be desired with long queues for the limited range of food but more importantly the toilet facilities were good! Overall I was very impressed with the landscaped Olympic Park although a little surprised to see so much building work still in progress.

Chris Whipps has kindly donated a cup in memory of son Craig who so tragically died last year. We thank Chris and other members of the family for this donation which will ensure the memory of Craig lives on at the club in the years ahead. It is to be awarded annually to 'an unsung club hero'.

Dates for your diary please:
Friday 18 May – Youth Presentation Evening
Saturday 16 June – Olympic Ball
Thursday 21 June – Annual General Meeting
Sunday 1 July – Strawberry Luncheon

NB. Golf Day (Thursday 19 July) – SOLD OUT!

Finally it is 'thank you' to everyone who supported last weekend's May Day Tournaments whether by playing, helping with the organisation before or on the two days or just watching. The two days were a great success despite the variable weather due in no little part to Kirstin Cumming who masterminded the whole event from beginning to end and to Daphne Beckett for organising the catering.

Finally, finally – please see the Home Page of the club's website throughout the summer (it must come soon!) for any important news or announcements.
