Magpies HIts

Magpies under 10s took part in the last mini tournament of the season yesterday at Watton Hockey Club.
Magpies had the only B team in the tournament. They managed to draw two games, which was great as they are all nearly 8 or 9 years old.
The A team, though won 3 and drew 1 of their matches.
They started with a frustrating 0-0 v Pelicans despite having two excellent chances to score.
This was followed by an emphatic 4-0 v Magpies B (Amelia 2, Phoebe and Georgie)
2-0 v Dragons (both goals by Phoebe Eglington)
and finally a 1-0 win v Dereham saled with a good short corner by Faith Reader at the end of a tight match.
Credit must go to Alice Wiseman in goal for 4 clean sheets and the hard work of Molly, Alice and Emily.
A huge thanks to the two team coaches / managers: Martin Reader and John Pope for their time, effort and expertese throughout the season. The A team finished with 2 tournament wins and a runners-up. They have got better and more confident as the season has progresed. There is also plenty of optimism for the under 10s next season as half the A team and several B team players will be in this age group again.

MY HIGHLIGHTS

Although the 2011/12 season is still not over – we have the Magpies Tournament (Saturday/Monday 5/7 May) and the U12 Boys playing in the national minis finals at Cannock HC on Saturday 12 May to look forward to - it is time to bring down the curtain on the third season of this column with a brief summary of the past few months, plus a few other items.

For me the highlights of a generally non-vintage season have been, in no particular order, the U16 Girls winning the national indoor club championship, the Ladies' 2nds winning East Div 2NE in fine style, the excellent outdoor season enjoyed by the U16 Girls, the Ladies' 1sts good run after Christmas leading to league safety, the Men's Over 50s reaching the national final with their 3-1 semi-final away win over Bowdon, the fine performance of the U12 Boys in winning the East Minis and the willingness of club members to help out with umpiring in the pool or before or after their own games.

There were also some other encouraging performances on the Ladies' side of the club with the 3rds having a good season despite a mid-term blip, the 4ths escaping relegation with three late wins, the 5ths finishing third in their league with a much changed team from last season, the 6ths finishing strongly to move away from the bottom three places and the Girls Development finishing second in their league behind Norwich City.

The Men's side of the club gave some cause for concern although there were still some bright spots. The 1sts were sadly relegated despite some good performances and the best efforts of the coaches including Bill Williams (who will not be with us next season unfortunately due to other Saturday commitments), the 2nds had a disappointing season rescued to an extent by the late avoidance of relegation, the 3rds kept in the hunt for promotion until the final match despite the nasty and untimely injury sustained by skipper Matt Brand, the 4ths avoided relegation with a good late run (and here special thanks are due to manager Robert Steven who kindly answered the call to run the team and who kept things going despite having to call on some 45 players during the season), the 5ths started well before encountering a rocky patch but still finished in a creditable fifth place, the 6ths finished the season in a good seventh place after including some promising youngsters from the Development squad after Christmas, the 7ths pushed for promotion all season before just missing out after another excellent few months and the Boys Development had another encouraging season. For the overall health of the men's side of the club three things need to happen before next season – any thought of dropping a team to be ditched forthwith, more players to be recruited and more of our existing members to commit to playing more often to give a chance for more settled sides to be selected with consequent less pressure on team managements who, together with all club officers, are to be thanked and congratulated on their hard work over the season.

I take this opportunity as Commercial Manager (Acting) to thank all of the club's sponsors and advertisers for their support once again including, of course, Mark and Annie Legg of Hunton Legg (R.G.) Ltd, Mark and Debbie Kilbourn of Kilbourns.co.uk, Mike Smith and Murray Graham of Lovewell Blake, Brian Pring of Larking Gowen and Nigel and Sue Bedingfield of WaveneyValley Blog.com – the latter for their sponsorship and overseeing of the club's invaluable website. We are indebted to all our sponsors and advertisers.

The Men's O50s were unable to cap their fine season with a win in the final of the EHB Masters Cup last Sunday at Cannock HC but they (and their enthusiastic group of supporters) did the club proud with a battling performance against a talented Richmond side who by the end of the game were clearly rattled by their inability to make the game safe after having only one goal to show for their first half dominance. Magpies tackled as if their lives depended on the outcome and Murray Graham had an excellent game between the posts with a series of fine saves including a superb 'one-on-one' just after the interval. As ever skipper Phil Cobbald led by example but with Richmond down to nine players for a short time the equaliser would not come despite Magpies forcing several penalty corners in the closing stages. It was a very enjoyable weekend despite the result and I thank the team for my free meal and the glass of wine or two!

Other news in brief
a) I am very sorry to record the death of longstanding club vice-president Mrs Vera Alexander. Vera was a keen supporter of the club kindly hosting and attending club functions for many years. Our condolences go to son Phil and all members of the family on their great loss.
b) It is very best wishes to club vice-president Dick Rout and Val Notley on their marriage this coming Saturday.
c) It is thanks and congratulations to organiser Heidi Wooltorton and everyone who has helped the Smartie Tube Challenge to top the £1000 mark for the invaluable work of the youth committee. If you still have any filled or half filled tubes would you please hand them to Heidi at the Youth Presentation Evening which is now being held on Friday 18 May due to the U12 Boys being away in Cannock on the original date.
d) Cricket lovers will know that it's an honour for one's cricketing prowess to be recorded in Wisden Cricketers' Almanack (perhaps the world's most famous sporting annual) and in the 149th edition, recording the 2011 season, several HMHC members are included, namely Jaik Mickleburgh (Essex CCC), Tim Alexander (Framlingham College), Harry Bamber (Norwich School), Elliot Smith (Culford School) and Ben Wright (Framlingham College). If other members have been similarly honoured in the past (and I know of at least two) I would be pleased to know including which year.

I hope to be back with Musings next season and in the meantime I could well be issuing the occasional Mini Musings to cover important events in brief. I thank club members, parents and supporters for their friendship during the season not forgetting Andrew Joyce and Brian Cole my chief assistant scoreboard operators together with 'adviser' Claude Brand. We have had some fun on the touchline. I hope Andrew and Brian will not need retraining at the start of next season!
With kind regards

Harleston Magpies 0 Richmond 1

HA Over 50s National Final

Most of the portents were good; none of the team was suffering from hypothermia after a team photo shoot on Monday, all arrived safely on the Saturday night at the hotel in Walsall and Pete Finnie managed to make it there without triggering off any roadside cameras. The environs of the hotel ensued that no members of the team went out on nocturnal strolls though manager Robert Stimpson took it upon himself to check this. In the morning, two magpies flew over the M6- so far so good.

Anyway to the game, Richmond started strongly and pressurised Magpies from the start who struggled to keep possession and so created more pressure on themselves. However the defence allowed few clear chances other than from short corners. Here Murray Graham made exceptional saves Richard Organ's drag flicks. Magpies struggled to have any meaningful possession in the Richmond third of the pitch.

With two minutes to half time Richmond were awarded a fifth short corner and after switching the point of play several times Mark Precious scored with a rising shot.

In the second half, Magpies gradually got themselves into the game and Richmond became less enamoured with the umpires, themselves, us and life in general culminating with a both a green and a yellow card. Magpies gained their first short corner with 15 minutes left and then three others and for the first time there was real pressure on the Richmond goal.

With minutes left, Magpies took off Murray and played with eleven outfield players but to no avail.( I was requested to put in a note at this point to state that Jerry Blackmore spent longer on the pitch than Murray but I won't). There could be no faulting the effort and Richmond were relieved to hear the final whistle.

The heavens now opened as if weeping at our demise and we all got very wet at the presentation.

On reflection were we beaten by a very good team and perhaps our path to the final had been too easy as at no time had we been put under anything like the pressure that Richmond did.

Thanks go to all those who travelled from Norfolk to cheer us on. As always Magpies supporters outnumbered and outshouted those of the opposition- thank you Mike.

Also thanks to Philip for his organisation etc etc and even washing the kit.

U12 BOYS RULE THE EAST

I gave pride of place to the U12 Boys last week and it is between them again this week and the O50 Men's Veterans captained by Phil Cobbald who play in the final of the EHB Masters Cup on Sunday. But I will give it to the U12 Boys for winning the East Minis at Weybread in fine style last Saturday. After drawing 0-0 with Old Loughtonians in their opening pool game they moved into top gear with wins over Cambridge City (4-0), Ipswich (3-0), Hertford (3-1) and Spalding (10-0). They then had a tough semi final against Bury St Edmunds winning 1-0 before a rematch with Old Loughtonians in the final. This time their shots were on target but not before goalkeeper Freddie Dixon was called upon to make a vital save with the game still goalless. However, it was soon 3-0 to Magpies with two further goals coming in the second half. This was another outstanding performance by a talented squad coached by Stuart Peters and they now represent the East – together with Old Loughtonians – in the national finals at Cannock HC on Saturday 12 May. Congratulations to Stuart and the squad. For the record their goals were scored by Archie Winter (9), Jolyon Summers (7), Kieran Peters (5), Cameron Woodcock (2), William Donsworth (2) and William Simpson.

I take this opportunity to thank the many members (endorsed by chief organiser Fiona Wheeler) who helped to make the two days of the East Minis at Weybread so successful including Kirstin Cumming and Philippa Taylor and their catering team, Nick McAllen, the Master of Ceremonies on the microphone, Robert Stimpson and Ewie Cumming behind the bar, Shirley McAllen who helped the East officials with the scores etc during the two exhausting days and everyone who made the car parking surprisingly enjoyable. I was meant to be in charge of the car parking team but my decision to park the cars at right angles to the clubhouse was immediately over-ruled in favour of parallel to the clubhouse and thereafter I was effectively demoted in a car park coup!

But back to Phil and his O50 squad who take on Richmond in the EHB Cup final at Cannock HC on Sunday (11.00). They have reached this stage of the competition with four outstanding wins and one walk over with all the wins being away from home including the fine 3-1 semi-final victory over Bowdon. During this run they have played some fine attacking hockey scoring 24 goals with just 3 against and it is to be hoped they will produce more of the same on Sunday. Good luck to the squad which is Phil Cobbald (captain), Ian Absolon, Jonathan Aldridge, Keith Alexander, David Blackmore, Jerry Blackmore, Clyde Camburn, Peter Dolton, David Fairhead, Peter Finnie, Murray Graham (GK), Jeremy Podd, Bob Skinner, Jim Stather, Jon Wells, Tiger Young, Robert Stimpson (manager).

The inaugural and well attended Senior Teams Awards Evening was held last Friday in the clubhouse and it is 'thank you' to the organisers (Tristan Baynes, Kristina Erith, Philippa Taylor, Jose Tibbenham - and the team captains for their assistance) and everyone who attended and congratulations to the following winners at the end of another outdoor league season.

Magpies Under 12s pictured after their 5-0 win in the final of the East Championships.
They will now play in the National Finals on May 12th.

8 Magpies girls (as part of a Norfolk under 17 squad) have just come back from an Easter tour of Holland where they managed to win a tournament in Rotterdam.

Other Magpies players: Kira Wooltorton, Georgie Minta, Emily Brown, Jess Howland and Fiona MacKenzie
It was amazing to see the scale and passion for hockey  in Holland.
The tournament we took part in was in its 25th year, just for 16-18 year olds and sponsored by Volvo.
The girls also played a full length game at another club which had 6 astros (4 of them water based) and their own indoor hall.
On Sunday we went to watch the EHL quarter finals at Rotterdam HC.
Our Dutch guide (former Bloemendal player) got us into the players lounge and arranged for the girls to meet  some of the stars. Above is Teun de Nooijer (multiple Euro, World and Olympic champion plus World player of the year several times).

U12 BOYS TAKE CENTRE STAGE

Pride of place goes this week to our U12 Boys who compete in the East Minis Finals at Weybread on Saturday morning (10.30). The team, managed and coached by Stuart Peters, will be playing in the event for the third successive year. They have enjoyed another really good season winning all their five events with attacking flair culminating with the Norfolk championship three weeks ago. All nine members of the squad have played a full part in this success and qualification for the national championships as East champions would be a fitting reward for their endeavours. Good luck to our boys.

The squad is – Freddie Dixon (GK). Kieran Peters, Sam McCluskey, William Donsworth, Jolyon Summers, David Cadman, Cameron Woodcock, William Simpson and Archie Winter.

In a busy weekend the club is also hosting the U10 Girls Finals on Saturday afternoon and the U12 Girls and U10 Boys Finals on Sunday without, unfortunately, any Magpies' participation.

It was good to see coach David Brook and the Norfolk U17 Girls squad, containing eight Magpies, at the European Hockey League in Rotterdam over the past weekend. They had just won the 25th Annual Easter Youth Tournament at HVS HC in Rotterdam beating the hosts 3-0 in the final after two wins and a draw in their pool matches. Well done to David and the team.

All three English club sides – Beeston, East Grinstead and Reading - reached the quarter-finals of the EHL before being defeated. Beeston failed to do themselves justice being beaten 7-1 by UHC Hamburg while Reading were denied what could have been a winning goal against KHC Dragons of Belgium - when the umpire awarded a penalty corner with the ball in the back of the net - before losing 3-1 after two late goals in extra time. East Grinstead then lost to the host club by an identical score after being in with a chance of victory until near the end of the game. Like Reading they played with a kicking back in the last couple of minutes. Strangely on the first day of the event it was not until well into the fourth game before a penalty corner was converted and even thereafter there were far fewer conversions than normal. Taeke Taekema of Amsterdam only converted one of his nine or so chances in two games due, perhaps, to being inhibited by a serious injury sustained by an opponent in a recent match.

The event was not a particularly happy one for the 10 or so English club players who could well form the nucleus of the Great Britain Men's squad of 16 for the London Olympics. As usual the event trialled some experimental rules - this time allowing the playing of the ball overhead (!) and the award of own goals from shots within or outside the circle. I welcome these moves but more experience will be needed to form a definitive judgement as to their long term benefits.

Congratulations and very best wishes to Simon Hipwell and Sinead Caulfield on their Easter wedding. I understand there are photographs on Facebook!

Other news
a) Well done to the Men's 5ths who completed their season with a 3-0 win last Thursday over North Walsham with goals by Roger Kent and two by skipper Eddie Thorne – the latter with assists by George Moore.

ANOTHER BIG BLOW

In the 100th edition of this column (four of them kindly written by Will Main earlier this season) I am very sorry to record that following closely on the retirement of manager Robert Stimpson the Men's 1sts has suffered another big blow with the news that Richard Gill has, coincidentally, also decided to call it a day. Since returning to the club five seasons ago Richard has been a tower of strength in the middle of the defence and he will be badly missed as the team strives to regain its national league status. Richard played for Norwich School and Norwich Union – the latter alongside his father David and uncle John Morgan - before joining Magpies in 1996. He played for the club in the national league during his gap year (making his debut in the home 3-0 win over Warrington in September 1996) and for one season while at Leeds University. He then played for Doncaster in the national league for two years before having a year in the Premier Division with Southgate with ex-Magpie colleagues Tristan Baynes and Anthony Falkus. He returned to Magpies for two seasons before rejoining Doncaster, for whom in his two spells he played over 100 national league matches. On his second return to HMHC he helped the club to twice win the East League with automatic promotion back to the national league coming in March 2009 after failure in the play-offs at Cannock the previous year necessitated by the reduction of teams in the national league.

Richard has set a fine example with his commitment to training, consequent fitness, skills (defensive and attacking) and determination on the field – the latter bringing him the occasional card or two! He has been the sort of player you want on your side for these qualities – excluding, perhaps, the cards! I put Richard in the top ten players I've seen play for Magpies down the years and he ranks Kwan Browne, who he played alongside for English Universities, the best player he has played against for Magpies, matching the high regard of Robert Stimpson for the Canterbury player.

During his long career Richard, who is a senior tax manager with Aviva, has had the full support of Caroline who will now expect him to cut their lawns! The good news is that Richard is not getting rid of his hockey kit so we might see him play the occasional games for one of the club's other teams next season.

Clubhouse management
I am also sorry to report that following on from his retirement as Men's 1st team manager Robert Stimpson has also decided to stand down as clubhouse manager with effect from the end of this month. Robert has done a first class job since he came forward to take on the job six years ago while I was club chairman and I have been grateful to him ever since – as I know all other members have been. Thank you Robert for your conscientious and efficient service to the club in this important role.

Senior Teams Awards Evening. I remind all members, coaches, managers and supporters that they are invited to attend this informal and inaugural event in the clubhouse at 7.00pm on Friday 13 April when the Player of the Year and Leading Goalscorer of the various teams will be rewarded.

Last Saturday saw seven of our teams playing their last matches of the season with the Girls Development leading the way at Weybread with a 2-0 win over Dereham. This rounded off another excellent season for the squad. Next up were the Ladies' 4ths playing Watton 2nds and both needed to win to avoid relegation with Watton having been beaten by Evergreens in their other outstanding match. So it was a tense encounter felt on both sides of the fence and relieved somewhat for Magpies when Laura Schultheiss put them ahead following an outrageous dummy! Tension returned in full when Watton equalised just before half time before victory was gained with a typical and late penalty corner strike by Sarah Legg. Well done to skipper Katie Devereux and her team and to club chairman Mark Legg for his coaching during the last month which has seen the team gain three vital successive wins.

Meantime on the other pitch the Men's 2nds were gaining their first victory since 14 January when they overcame Ramgarhia 6-3. Magpies took full advantage of the visitors playing for much of the first half with only nine men and were 5-1 up at the break through Robbie Kinsella (2), Mitchell Tompkins (his first goal for the team), Lawrence Baynes and Ben Wright with Ben adding a second after half time. The MOTM award deservedly went to Ewan Cumming who had the game of his life on the left side of defence edging out (in my view) James Lane, who in a quality match (during which it was good to see Giles Flatt make his second team debut) was the busier goalkeeper, and Richard Larkin. The Men's 6ths then rounded off a good afternoon at Weybread with a 3-0 win over Dereham 5ths with all three goals coming from Jack Frere-Smith.

Away from home and with their league positions already secure the Ladies' 6ths went down 3-1 to Norwich Dragons 4ths and the Men's 4ths lost 4-2 against Dereham 3rds while the Men's 3rds last chance of promotion in an excellent season went with a combination of them losing 3-2 to Dereham 2nds and close rivals Sudbury winning.

Other news and comments in brief
a) Congratulations to Rhodri Furlong who has been selected to play for Wales U16s in matches against Scotland over Easter and in the UK School Games at Old Loughtonians in May. In the latter he will come up against Magpies' 1st team colleague Elliot Smith.
b) It is thanks to George Hunter and Phil Cobbald for the work they are doing on the grounds in readiness for the May Day weekend tournament.
c) It is also thanks to the two 1st teams, the Men's 7ths, the youth teams and the Ladies' 2nds and 4ths for their regular match reports on the website - with a special 'thank you' to Kay Dennis for her 4th team reports posted each week on the day of the match.
d) In the last two league matches of the season the Men's 5ths entertain North Walsham this Thursday (7.45) and the Men's 7ths are away to Bury St Edmunds 3rds on Saturday 14 April (10.30).
e) Please let me know if you have lost a small silver case containing some Nintendo games.
With kind regards

Magpies Ladies IV 2 - 1 Watton II

Magpies faced Watton in their final league match of the season, with a victory vital in their fight for survival. And although Magpies were relying on results from elsewhere to keep their Premier Division status alive, they were determined to do their part.

Nerves were clear to see in the opening few minutes, Magpies not quite getting their timing right, with Watton being first to any loose balls. But as the half settled down it was Magpies who had more of the posssession and more of the chances in front of goal and went close from a short corner. Watton were dangerous on the counter attack down the right wing, but couldn't take the lead. And it was the home side that scored first, forward Laura Schultheiss, in good form of late, beating the 'keeper with a shot cracked into the corner. Magpies looked to press forward and extend their lead, but when Watton won a short corner minutes before the half time whistle they equalised with a well taken strike.

Magpies were still confident they could get the win they so desperately craved, and the team battled hard for the last 35 minutes of their season, and had plenty of chances but couldn't convert. Once again Katherine Ridley at left back for Magpies put in an outstanding performance, competently defending and quick on the break, and Emily Parsons, in her last match for Magpies, playing well in her differing roles through the middle, and Sarah Legg as always at the heart of Magpies positive play. So it was fitting when Magpies won a short corner close to the final whistle, for Sarah Legg to step up and crack the ball home. Magpies held on for the deserved victory.

This brought Magpies their third win in a row, showing just how well they have improved over recent weeks, and their determination and fight to stay in the Premier Division. Now it is a waiting game for the other results.

On a personal note, from all the players, a big thank you must go to Mark Legg, for his expert coaching over the last month, without which Magpies would surely not be in the position they are now.

Kay Dennis, Magpies Ladies 4th's.
