Magpies HIts

1st Semi-Final - Saturday 11 June 2011

Harleston Magpies Mixed 1 - 3 Cannock Mixed

In a closely contested game Magpies lost to two late Cannock goals. Both sides played some fluent passing hockey during the first period, but ultimately cancelled each other out with both defences soaking up the pressure applied by the probing forwards of the opposition. The second period of play continued in much the same way. Midway through the half Magpies took the lead through captain David Francis who sneaked in at the back post to convert a Carl Sitch cross-shot. The lead was soon pegged back by Cannock who scored from a well executed penalty corner which evaded both the goalkeeper and post man to nestle in the side netting. Magpies pushed hard to secure a winner but despite great build-up play never created any clear chances and Cannock ran out 3-1 winners with two late breakaway goals. Great credit must go to all the Magpies players, especially the defensive trio of Lauren Barber, Katrina Warnes and Leigh Sitch.

3rd/4th Play-Off - Sunday 12 June 2011

Harleston Magpies Mixed 0 - 1 Andover Mixed

On a wet Sunday afternoon with the bitter taste of yesterday's defeat still present, the Magpies' manager, Debbie Francis, called upon the team to show greater flair and trickery in the attacking third of the pitch. With this in mind Magpies soon took control of the game with Richard Gill and Tristan Baynes winning the midfield battle and supplying the Magpies' forwards with plentiful chances to open the scoring. Through a combination of intimidating goalkeeping and missing the target Magpies were unable to capitalise on their superiority. Emily Wilford and Gavin Cole were giving the Andover defence a torrid time and were well supported by the midfield who joined in the numerous Magpies' attacks. Against the run of play Andover scored midway through the first period. As the rain continued, so did Magpies dominance of the game but no goals were to come despite the vocal support from the crowd. As time ticked away Magpies were left to finish the game camped in the Andover 23m desperately searching for some inspiration to unlock the door without success.

A big thank-you must go to all the players and supporters who travelled to Sheffield over the weekend.

FINAL - Cannock 2 Horsham 0

HIGH HOPES

It is to be hoped that the 2010/11 season, which began way back in September, ends on a high for the club this weekend when Magpies continue their challenge to win the EHB Mixed Trophy for a second time. They play Cannock in the first semi-final on Saturday (1.30) at Sheffield Hallam HC and they will hope to meet the winners of the other semi, between Andover and Horsham (3.30), in Sunday's final (3.30). The losers of the semis will play-off for 3rd and 4th places on Sunday at 1.30.

On their march to the semis Magpies have beaten Norwich City 4-2 (A), Brentwood 9-0 (H), Luton Town 6-0 (A) and Phoenix 4-2 (H) before surprisingly being given a home walk-over by Olton & West Warwickshire in the quarter-finals. Saturday's semi-final against Cannock (winners in 2008) will be a big test for Magpies who last won this national event at Bowdon HC in June 2004 by beating Birmingham University 5-0 after overcoming old rivals (and regular winners) Phoenix 6-3 in their semi-final clash with goals by David Francis, Emma Lee-Smith (2), Tim Whiteman (2) and Gavin Cole.

In a memorable final the first half was goalless but after Iain Cumming made the vital breakthrough with a firmly hit penalty corner midway through the second half the result was never in doubt. Further goals came in quick succession from Tim, Philip Cobbald and Emma with another from Tim rounding-off a splendid win for Magpies captained jointly by Charlie Harrison and David Francis.

David continues to be in charge and it is good luck and best wishes this weekend to him and his squad which is as follows.
David Francis*, Debbie Francis*, Tristan Baynes*, Lawrence Baynes*, Gavin Cole*, Richard Gill, Robbie Kinsella, Ross Briggs, Leigh Sitch, Carl Sitch, Katrina Warnes, Louisa Greenacre*, Shev Wooltorton, Lauren Barber, Laura Tibbenham, Emily Wilford, Verity Blyth, Bryony Lund and Artimus Clark.

Other comments in brief:
· Good luck also to Reading HC this weekend as they seek to become the first British team to win the Euro Hockey League when they play Club de Campo (Spain) in Saturday's semis and, hopefully, Oranj Zwart or hosts HGC (both from the Netherlands), in Sunday's final.
· Please come to the club's Annual General Meeting in the clubhouse next Thursday (16 June) at 7.30pm.
· As I'm sure you know you will also be very welcome at the Strawberry Luncheon on Sunday 26 June – please see the Home Page of the club's website for more details.

With best wishes to all readers
