HIGHLIGHTS GALORE
Although the 2010/11 season is still not over - we have this weekend's Magpies Tournament (Saturday and Monday) and the Mixed team's EHB Trophy home quarter-final match against Olton and West Warwicks (and semis and final to hopefully follow!) on Sunday 15 May to look forward to – the time has come to look back on another successful season for the club. No doubt we all have our highlights and mine include the Men's 7th's 100% record in East League 6NE, the seven consecutive victories achieved after Christmas by the Ladies' 1sts and Ben Wright's stunning goal to give the Men's 1sts a vital victory over Indian Gymkhana; and Tristan Baynes' reverse stick shot for the Mixed against Phoenix was a bit special as well!
A longer list would include the following with apologies if your own highlight has been omitted.
Ladies' 1sts – EHB Division One Indoor League champions and promotion
Ladies' 1sts – seven consecutive wins in East Conference
Ladies' 2nds – East League Fair Play Award
Ladies' 4ths – Norfolk Division 1 champions and promotion
Men's 1sts – second in EHB Division One Indoor League and promotion
Men's 5ths – second in East 4NE and promotion
Men's 7ths – East 6NE champions with 100% record and promotion
U10 Girls – first in Harleston, Watton and Norfolk minis and second in East Minis (and unbeaten all
season)
U12 Girls – first in Watton minis
U14 Girls – East Champions
U16 Girls – Brentwood Indoor Tournament winners, East Indoor Champions and national finalists
U12 Boys – first in Harleston, Watton and Norfolk minis
U16 Boys – East Indoor Champions and national finalists
I take this opportunity to thank all of the club's sponsors and advertisers for their support once again including, of course, Mark and Annie Legg of Hunton Legg (R.G.) Ltd, Val and Sue Tolhurst of Kitchen Sense of Harleston, James Banham and Murray Graham of Banham Graham, Brian Pring of Larking Gowen and Nigel and Sue Bedingfield of WaveneyValleyBlog.com – the latter for their sponsorship and overseeing of the club's invaluable website. We are indebted to all our sponsors and advertisers.
Congratulations to:
· The following members who have been selected to represent the East in the forthcoming Divisional Masters Tournaments, namely Martin Reader and Kevin Ridley (Over 40's, 6/7 May, Bristol), Andy Palmer and Ali Williamson (Over 45's, 6/7 May, Cannock) and Jonathan Aldridge, Jerry Blackmore, Philip Cobbald and Jon Wells (Over 50's, this weekend, Beeston).
· Reading HC on becoming the first British team to qualify for the semi-finals of the Euro Hockey League since its inception four years ago by beating East Grinstead and KHC Dragons of Belgium in Holland over the weekend. In an action packed and very hot weekend we saw some splendid hockey, two own goals (following the experiment for this event only) including an aerial ball bizarrely deflecting in off a Reading boot, far too many referrals to the video umpire (and some very slow decisions), four of the twelve matches being decided on shoot-outs involving players trying to beat the goalkeeper in eight seconds starting from the '25' and Reading's shoot-out victory over Dragons being decided after an agonising wait following yet another referral. Good luck to Reading in the semis and, hopefully final, over the weekend of 11/12 June at a venue to be announced.
I hope you will excuse me finishing on a personal note. After more than ten years of day-to-day involvement with Magpies I am standing down with effect from the AGM from nearly all of my club roles. I am, therefore, sorry to say that this is my last Musings. However, I hope to be present on many days next season to cheer on our teams. I take this opportunity to thank the many club members, parents and supporters for their friendship and wonderful help and encouragement over the years.
With very best wishes

SUN SHINES ON BUSY CLUB
The club looked at its best last weekend when we once again hosted the East Club Minis. The sun shone down (and especially so on the Sunday) as hundreds of players and parents and other spectators used the club's facilities to the full on two busy days of exciting hockey played in the best of spirits.
I take this opportunity to thank the many club members who helped to make the weekend run so well – by cutting the grass, strimming the verges, making and serving the excellent refreshments, manning the bar, spraying the water-based pitch (without drenching the spectators!), supervising the car parking and emptying the bins. They were two very hectic and tiring but financially beneficial days for the club.
Working equally as hard (for which many thanks) were the coaches of our U10/U12 Boys' and Girls' teams. On the Saturday the U10 Boys finished a highly creditable fourth while the U12 Girls also played well and only narrowly failed to progress to the second phase of their event. The next day the U10 Girls started with a 7-0 win over Ipswich and they went on to maintain their season long unbeaten record with a series of excellent performances eventually finishing second to Canterbury. Meantime the U12 Boys also played some good hockey and were unlucky to face an impressive Old Loughtonians team in the second phase of their competition. Well done to all our teams and their coaches. I hope they enjoyed the weekend.
FIH News
"The 2012 season will be one of the busiest and most important in recent history," reports FIH President Leandro Negre. "Our regular schedule will be supplemented with the Olympic qualifiers and of course the Olympic Games themselves, making it non-stop hockey during the year."
The first of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments will be hosted by India in New Delhi from February 15-26 with six men's and six women's teams battling for a spot in the London 2012 Olympic Games. The next Olympic Qualification Tournament will take place one month later, from March 14-25, 2012 in Beerschot, Belgium. It will be followed by the third Olympic Qualification Tournament in Kakamigahara, Japan from April 25 - May 6, 2012. All three tournaments will host the men's and women's tournaments at the same time. The trio of joint tournaments is the final opportunity for teams to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games with the winner of each men's and women's event earning a place in London.
The teams assigned to the qualification tournaments will not be known until the completion of all of this year's continental championships, which will be after the Pan American Games, scheduled to finish on 29 October. Winners of the five Continental Championships earn an automatic berth to the 2012 London Olympics. NB. The two GB teams have already qualified as hosts.
Other news in brief
v Congratulations to skipper Melissa Hunter and all members of the Ladies' 2nds on winning the East League Fair Play Award for 2010-11. Factors contributing to this award included 'no red or yellow cards all season, excellent administration and a team which made their league manager's job straightforward'.
v If you wish to attend the End of Season Disco and Supper Party at the Apollo Club in Harleston on Friday 6 May (7.30) and have yet to contact Jose Tibbenham (07881 811259) or Philippa Taylor (01379 852210) would you please do so very soon. Tickets are £15 each and will not be on sale at the door.
v Please note your diary for the 50/50 Auction to be held at the club on Friday 8 July. Details of this exciting event will be issued soon after Easter.

A group of 10 under 10 girls headed to Magpies hockey club to compete in the East Finals after qualifying as Norfolk Champions. Early nerves were settled by a strong start against Ipswich. After an early hat-trick by captain Lottie Summers, Magpies settled into a good rhythm and passed the ball well around the team that finished runners up in the Suffolk tournament. Magpies added another 2 goals before half time from Anna Kilbourn and Amelia Preece. In the 2nd half, a few positional changes allowed others the freedom to attack, and Amelia Herschel-Schorland scored another goal. A final goal was added by Lottie Summers, to leave the final score at 7-0.
After a long break, they then faced Broxbourne, the Hertfordshire champions. This game was much closer, with some strong attacking from Anna Kilbourn, leading to a 1-0 lead at half time courtesy of Lottie Summers. In the 2nd half, Magpies relaxed a bit, to allow Broxbourne more of the ball, and some good defending from Abigail Bourne prevented them from making any clear-cut chances. Lottie Summers added another goal from a short corner to make the final score 2-0.
The 3rd game for the girls was against Sevenoaks, the Kent runners-up, who had already won both of their previous games. They proved their toughest opposition yet, with some good saves from goalkeeper Lucy Westmacott needed to keep the score 0-0 at half time. There were many chances at both ends early on in the 2nd half, and a brilliantly worked team goal with some great passing down the right involving Anna Kilbourn, Lottie Summers, and finished off with a well-placed shot from Amelia Preece. Phoebe Eglington was very close to adding another goal, but was unable to convert a good chance, leaving the final score at 1-0. This placed Magpies top of their group, and advancing to the classification pool that would decide the winners of the tournament, along with Sevenoaks (runners up in our group) and the winners and runners up in the other group (Canterbury and Bury St Edmunds). They entered into this pool bringing with them the 3 points they earned from beating Sevenoaks.
This group of girls have all worked very hard and are a talented bunch. I have really enjoyed coaching them this year. The team has been unbeaten all season. They have scored lots of goals and only conceded one. They have won 3 club tournaments plus the Norfolk Championship. They are full of promise for the next few years and I am sure they will all become great hockey players.
The under 12 boys also had a good tournament yesterday. The picture of both teams below illustrates what a great family club Magpies is. There were 6 pairs of siblings involved yesterday: Rose and Archie Winter; Lottie and Jol Summers; Jonty and Amelia Herschel-Shorland; Anna and Alex Kilbourn; Evie and Ellie Eglington and Sam and Emily McCluskey (umpire).

They entered into this pool bringing with them the 3 points they earned from beating Sevenoaks.
The 1st game in this pool was against Bury St Edmunds, the runners up from the other group. They proved tough opposition as they had some strong players who could control the game. However, the Magpies girls worked together and took control of the game. They created multiple chances for themselves through many short corners, but Rose Winter was unable to convert them despite some good shots. The 2nd half continued in much the same manner, with Molly Warnes working hard down both the left wing to create more chances, but Bury defended well and prevented Magpies converting any, to leave a score-line of 0-0.
This meant that Magpies had to win their final match against Canterbury to prevail as champions. However they proved to be very tough opposition. The game was very even, and both teams had chances – the better of which were by Canterbury. Although some very good defending by Faith Reader and Rose Winter, as well as quality goalkeeping from Lucy Westmacott kept them at bay. In the 2nd half, the long hot day took its toll and tired legs led to mistakes from both teams, leading to chances for Lottie Summers, Amelia Preece and Anna Kilbourn. The Canterbury defenders and goalkeeper worked hard to keep them all out. Similar good defending from Rose Winter and Abigail Bourne prevented the Canterbury passing moves from being successful. This all led to a final score of 0-0, meaning Canterbury were crowned East champions, and Magpies finished runners up. A special mention must go to captain Lottie Summers who has scored many goals for the team, and is a very promising player. Rose Winter has also been a reliable member of the team, she has improved so much over this season to become a crucial part of the group and has made a huge influence on the way they have played.

HARLESTON MAGPIES UNDER 12 GIRLS AT THE EAST MINI FINALS
The Under 12 Girls Tournament was played in three sections. Magpies were in the same group as Canterbury, Cambridge City, Upminster and Sudbury.
Harleston Magpies made a very promising start in their opening game when Isobel Knowles scored early on to take the lead against Cambridge City. With 90 seconds left on the clock Magpies seemed as though they would hang on to their win. Unfortunately Cambridge equalised in the last minute.
Against Sudbury Magpies produced their most disappointing performance in a game they needed to win after dropping points against Cambridge. For some reason the spark was missing as Magpies played out a 0-0 draw.
Canterbury was to be their hardest game and Magpies produced a very good performance. Magpies had two tremendous goal scoring chances in the first and last minute of the match but they just could not take them. In between Canterbury had their chances but Lucie Gooch in goal made some excellent saves. As it turned out Canterbury went on to be the East Winners.
With three draws Magpies had to win their last game against Upminster to have a chance of going through to the final stages. Eventually Magpies scored in the second half with an excellent inter passing movement between Georgina Warren and Anna Harrod to set up Isobel Knowles to score. Upminster fought back to score a late equaliser but with a minute left Anna Harrod scored the winner.
As it turned out this was not enough for Magpies to go through to the final stages. Ironically Magpies were probably the only unbeaten team in the Tournament as the eventual winners Canterbury lost a game in the section.
Team: ElizaBell (Capt), Lucie Gooch, Sophie Dixon, Sophie Child, Hannah Dobson, Elle Eglington, Georgina Warren, Anna Harrod, Martha Lawrence and Isobel Knowles

Harleston Magpies Under 14 Girls were crowned Eastern Regional champions after remaining undefeated throughout an exhausting finals day held at Pelicans Hockey Club.
Magpies performances improved throughout the day and after managing a 1-0 win v Dereham, the girls followed this by comfortably defeating Ipswich 3-0. These two wins enabled Magpies to top their section with their opponents in the final being Old Loughtonians who had previously defeated Saffron Walden and Pelicans.
Magpies had certainly saved their best performance for the final with Saffron Wilford in fine form scoring a hat-trick in an impressive 3-1 win.
Magpies had been led superbly by captain Kira Wooltorton and leading tournament scorer Saffron Wilford who were ably supported by some fine goal keeping from Ellie O'Sullivan and the entire squad who worked tirelessly in very warm conditions.

MIXED AND U14 GIRLS' TEAMS DO CLUB PROUD
With the league season over attention turned last Sunday to the Mixed and U14 Girls' teams and there were well merited victories for both.
At Weybread in the last-16 round of the EHB Mixed Trophy we were up against a strong Phoenix side which until last season had won this national event three times in four seasons including a 3-2 win over Magpies (Gavin Cole and Tristan Baynes) in the 2006/2007 final at Old Loughtonians HC.
Phoenix went ahead on Sunday after just two minutes but Emily Wilford soon had us level and shortly afterwards Richard Gill put us ahead with a deft reverse stick shot to notch his second goal in two appearances for the Mixed this season. Things got even better for Magpies in front of a vocal and enthusiastic home crowd when from a narrow angle Tristan Baynes scored with a tremendous reverse stick shot into the top right corner of the net. Was this a better goal even than the reverse stick effort that Ben Wright powered in to give the Men's 1sts victory against Indian Gym in February? I'll leave those who were lucky enough to see both magnificent goals to decide. I have a view which I'm keeping to myself!
Phoenix dominated much of the second half of an exciting game during which the Magpies' keeper, Ross Briggs, thoroughly deserved my Man-of-the-Match accolade for a series of fine saves closely followed by the Phoenix keeper and our Richard Gill who was his ever reliable and skilful self at centre half. I have no time for modern positional terminology! Two minutes from the end with the Phoenix defence in confusion skipper David Francis made it 4-1 to Magpies with a powerful shot from the edge of the circle before the hardworking Andy Whalley fired in a consolation goal for the visitors. In the quarter-finals on Sunday 15 May Magpies have been drawn at home against Olton & West Warwicks who beat Phoenix last season. Also in the quarter-finals are Dereham who are away to Andover.
The umpiring of this match was in the safe hands of Peter Butcher and Trevor Norman and their performances must have impressed the eleven club members who that day were attending a Level 1 umpiring course kindly taken by Mike Pepper and organised by Jose Tibbenham.
I take this opportunity to thank Mike and Jose and all the umpires, including many HMHC members, who have officiated at our matches during the season. The members attending Sunday's course were Jordan Ball, Lauren Barber (as well playing in the match!), Quentin Baynes, Jenny Blyth, Verity Blyth, Amy Brook, Ewan Cumming, Robert Dyball, Kristina Erith, Pete Thornett and Siobhan Wooltorton. I hope they have all passed!
Meanwhile at Pelicans HC the U14 Girls were winning the East Championship to bring yet more credit to the club. The team qualified for finals day by winning their group earlier in the season and on Sunday progressed to the final by winning their pool with victories over Dereham (1-0) and Ipswich
(3-0). In the final they beat old club rivals Old Loughtonians 3-1. Many congratulations to coach Nigel Wooltorton and his squad on this fine achievement which over the season encompassed six wins, one draw and no defeats with 21 goals for and only three against. Some record!
More of our young players will be in action this coming weekend when the club hosts the East Club Mini Championships. So please come along if you are free to cheer on our U10 Boys and U12 Girls on Saturday and our U10 Girls and U12 Boys on Sunday – all our four teams having qualified through the Norfolk Championships. Play commences both days at 10.30. The winners and runners-up of the Under 12 events go on to the national finals.
Congratulations to Magpies' Welsh international Gareth Furlong on his selection to play for Celtic Panthers in the Great Britain Super League to be played from 16 April to 1 May. Now in its fifth year the event is GB Hockey's primary talent identification arena for players, coaches, umpires and officials.
With best wishes

MURRAY'S MAGNIFICENT MARVELS
Played 20, Won 20, Goals for 118, Goals against 18, Goal difference of plus 100 – what a record! Congratulations to the Men's 7ths who rounded off their superb season on Saturday with an 8-1 home win over IES 4ths to become the most successful team in all of the 28 East men's leagues. Only Sudbury in Div 3NE matched their 100% record but they could only manage a mere 84 goals while conceding 20.
Enormous credit for this outstanding success story must go to skipper Murray Graham for his leadership and organisation and to Simon Bardwell for his tactical input. In front of a select and knowledgeable crowd an early Iain Cumming goal settled nerves on both sides of the fence and thereafter other highlights against a good IES side included the far post dive and goal by Roger Kent, the crisp tackling of Man-of-the-Match Peter Finnie (who must think he needs a passport to cross the half way line!), the strong midfield performance of Peter Dolton (yes – I am praising you Peter!), the all-round play of David Blackmore and the excellent umpiring of John Adams (IES) and Mr Umpire Graham Ramm. I could go on in praise of all members of the squad but I won't except to say 'very well done' to Murray's Magnificent Marvels. No doubt they will continue to keep their bodies in fine physical trim in readiness for sterner tests next season.
Earlier the Ladies' 2nds played extremely well to beat IES 2-1 (after rare pitch watering problems for which I blame the wind) with two goals by Jess Howland but with Pelicans beating Ipswich 3rds it was not enough, sadly, for the team to avoid relegation. After 17 points from the first half of the season a mid-table position seemed assured. However, since Christmas the team has struggled but in the other East ladies' leagues in which there are four relegation spots 28 points ensured safety. The team can, therefore, feel themselves unlucky – but not too downhearted I hope. It was good to see Micayla Tootill at the game and to learn that she is recovering from her nasty knee injury.
These two matches and the defeat of the Boys' Development away to Norwich City (at the end of their successful inaugural season) brought the curtain down on another good league season for the club but there is still more hockey to be played and enjoyed this Sunday. The U14 Girls are playing in the East Finals hosted by Pelicans HC where in Pool A they take on Dereham (10.30) and Ipswich (2.10) with the winners of Pools A and B (Old Loughtonians, Pelicans and Saffron Walden) contesting the final (4.15).
Good luck to our girls and to skipper David Francis and the Mixed team who entertain Phoenix in their EHB Trophy last 16 clash. The two sides have met several times in recent seasons with the team from Sussex having the edge so another close encounter is to be anticipated on Sunday (1.00).
v Stuart Peters has asked me to mention that Boys' training has now finished for the season.
Important dates for your diary please –

Following last year’s full house of 40 teams I hope enthusiasm levels for our end of season club tournament remains as strong as ever and we will have another fully subscribed weekend. A Royal Wedding and extended Bank Holiday weekend purely being a sideshow to the main event…..Magpies end of season hockey celebration. This year our running order is as follows:
Saturday 30th April : Open Mixed Challenge
Round robin matches start at 10.30am leading to the knock out plate and cup competitions early afternoon. A maximum playing squad of 16 is permitted with 5 male outfield players on the pitch at any one time. You will be sure to get at least 5 matches of hockey, 20 minutes one way. No age limits apply but it is recommended that all members of your squad have or do play regular league hockey. Umpires will be provided by HMHC but any help offered on this front is greatly appreciated.
20 teams can be accommodated in this event.
Monday 2nd May : Ladies & Mens Club XI Tournament
Round robin matches start at 10.30am leading to the knock out plate and cup competitions early afternoon. A maximum playing squad of 16 is permitted and you will be sure to get at least 5 matches of hockey, 20 minutes one way.
No age limits apply but it is recommended that all members of your squad have or do play regular league hockey and we encourage all teams to enter into the spirit of a Club XI tournament by fielding players of an appropriate standard. In the ladies event players starred for Norfolk/Suffolk Premier standard are not permitted within squads and in the mens event regular East Division 2N or 2S standard players or above are discouraged from selection. Umpires will be provided by HMHC but any help offered on this front is greatly appreciated.
10 teams can be accommodated per competition.
As one of the last remaining East Anglian hockey tournaments, established in 1989, I hope you will continue to support us and keep this event alive.
