Ladies 6th Team match report
Fixture: Ladies 6th XI vs Norwich City 5
The weather on Saturday, 25th September seemed reasonable until about half an hour before our match was due to begin. The heavens opened and we all huddled in the changing room. The rain stopped long enough for us to warm up and start enjoying the match with the play mainly being our favour for the first half. Katie Webb aimed for goal and Jess Thurlow directed the ball in. The goalkeeper actually kicked the ball in.
During the second half, the rain came down in sheets, and play was fairly even with Karen Hunt stopping every ball that came her way and Georgi Scott making some fine runs. Despite being soaked to the skin, we managed to score another goal from a short corner. The receiver passed the ball to Eleanor Preston- Bloom, who aimed the ball neatly into the corner of the goal with Jess on hand to make sure it went in. The score was 2-0.

After 6 days of training and 2 days of matches over the Summer and early Autumn squads have now been chosen to represent the Saxon Tigers. The Tigers are chosen from 3 JRPC regions. This covers the whole of East Anglia, London and the South East. The Saxon Tigers under 16 and u18 will play in the Futures Cup. This is a 4 day tournament (during half term) featuring 4 regional squads of 16 players. This is in effect the trial for National Age Group Squads. At under 15 & under 17 selected players go to a 2 day residential camp (HiPAC). Magpies had about a dozen players competing for the Bury Tigers JRPC squad. 8 of them have been selected after matches against 2 other JRPC regions to represent the Saxon Tigers: Kathryn Ridley (under 15 girls HiPAC), Sarah Brook and Holly Baker (under 16 girls Futures Cup), Will Blyth, Tom Graham and Elliot Smith (under 16 boys Futures Cup) and Ben Wright and Will Martin (under 18 boys Futures Cup).

Harleston Magpies 7ths 8 Bury 4ths 0
The moment of truth had arrived. After all that pre season training and in depth tactical briefings this was the real thing- Could Harleston 7ths rise like AFC Wimbledon through the ranks of the lower leagues.
The brutal edge of captain Graham's master plan was shown by the dropping of Roger Kent to the 5ths where it would appear from the result that he improved his numeracy skills if nothing else.
As it turned out this was a game where Harleston had the greater share of the possession and were able to move the ball at speed to release a forward in space. Goals came at regular intervals throughout the first half and the occasional Bury attack found Keith Richardson ad David Fairhead in sprightly good form in defence.
Half time was reached with David Blackmore in danger of a second hat trick in eight days and Magpies leading 5-0.
Magpies found motivation harder in the second half coupled with some good performances by the younger Bury players meant that Magpies did not run up what would be termed a cricket score unless you come from Lancashire.
David Blackmore did complete his hat trick and others in the form of Joe Walker and martin Reader avoided theirs with some well placed shots just wide of the post.
Final score 8-0.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES WEEKEND PREVIEW
Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kitchen Sense of Harleston play Horsham away on Sunday starting at 1.15pm. Magpies are still looking for their first League point, but this is probably the strongest squad they have put out this season in what is always a hard physical match. There was definitely a big improvement in the performance last week against Surbiton and there were promising signs that they were slowly returning to the level of performance they are capable of playing. Catherine Cranmer makes her League debut for Magpies.
Horsham are a very hard competitive team as Dereham found out last week losing 6-0 at home to them but Magpies should be able to match them providing they take their chances. Magpies have had a difficult start to the season and are having to learn to cope without the loss of three forwards from last season. They are working hard in training to improve the forward movement and they just need a good result to kick start their season.
Squad: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Charlotte Lee-Smith, Charlotte Catalano, Katrina Warnes, Catherine Cranmer, Debbie Francis, Frances Sumner, Bryony Lund, Charlotte Harrison, Crista Hopkinson, Ellie Bale, Verity Blyth, Lucy Fields and Emily Wilford.

Magpies Return Pointless
Magpies ,visited Holcombe without the services of Richard Gill and Pete Bale and despite controlling much of the second half returned pointless after conceding a first half corner goal to ex England and Great Britain forward Matthews. Magpies had taken time to settle but soon got used to the surface and whilst Holcombe , fielding six full internationals, hardly threatened in open play it was Magpies who missed a number of chances and had opportunities to gain the points.
This week’s opponents are fourth placed Oxted who seem to score goals at will. Their first game was a thrilling 7-5 win against Bromley and Beckenham with Andy Cornick scoring three in open play. Last week saw them lose to Southgate 4-2 , and it would seem a weak defence is more than counteracted by a good forward line. Magpies defence, one of the strongest in the league will be strengthened by the return of Richard Gill, and will certainly be put to the test. At the other end may be goals will be easier to come by as the forwards have looked good in training and the Holcombe drought was perhaps just one of those days.
Team to be selected from : Richard Harms;David Ling(Capt);Andy Hipwell;Tristan Baynes;Mark Wheelhouse;Simon Hipwell;Toby Tibbenham;Carl Sitch;Will Martin;Callum Callinan;Duncan Graves;Dan Legg;Ben Wright;Richard Gill;Stuart Leate;Gareth Furlong.Marc Lloyd

JUGS WILL COME!
With three of our top four teams losing last Saturday it was a generally disappointing day for the club – a little like the much cooler and wet weather at Weybread. But again like the weather there were some bright spots and these included wins for the Ladies' 2nds (their second successive league win), the Ladies 4ths (albeit at the expense of our 5ths), the Ladies' 6ths, the Girls' Development and the Men's 7ths for whom skipper Murray Graham had things so much under control in their 8-0 win he even ensured the game was played in the dry!
I must reveal that in the win for the 7ths David Blackmore added a hat-trick to the one he scored the previous weekend for the Veterans and later in the day we learned that Roger Kent had scored a double hat-trick for the Men's 5ths in their remarkable 19-0 win away to a young Pelicans' 3rds. So with fingers firmly crossed I told David and Roger 'Jugs will come!' But only time will tell!
The Ladies' 1sts playing at home for the first time this season matched Surbiton for long spells of the game but were undone by the class of former international Helen Grant while the Men's 2nds were well beaten by a strong looking Dereham side. It is to be hoped that the Ladies' 1sts will be heartened by the fact so far this season they have lost to the top two teams in their league while the Men's 2nds will hope for reinforcements from the 1st team squad especially when the 1sts are playing on a Sunday.
It was good to see Angie Wheelhouse and Lucy Hayman watching the Ladies' 1sts and it is time this column paid tribute to the enormous contribution both have made to the team over the past ten years and more. Despite playing at opposite ends of the pitch both have similar records. They both joined the club at an early age, both went to university, both rarely missed a match and both were undoubtedly the best ladies to play in their positions in the history of the club.
For season after season Angie was the team's leading scorer with nearly 100 national league goals alone to her credit while Lucy (a former England U18 outdoor and England U21 indoor international) was quite outstanding in goal giving confidence to her fellow defenders with her skill and calm approach to her play and through her ability to read a game. It is to be hoped that Angie will play again next season after the birth of her baby in March and it is good to know that Lucy, who is concentrating on her demanding career, will be available to help out in an emergency as well as doing some coaching.
This Saturday the Men's 1sts are at home to Oxted (2.15) hoping to get back to winning ways after their narrow defeat away to Holcombe while both second teams are away - the Men to Ramgarhia in London and the Ladies to St Ives (in Cambs not Cornwall!). Meantime the Men's 3rds, after their encouraging 2-2 draw at Spalding, entertain Ely City (1.45) while the Ladies' 4ths, 5ths, 6ths and Girls Development are all at home.
On Sunday the Ladies' 1sts have a long trip to play Horsham (1.15) seeking their first points of the season while the U14 Boys play Bury (11.50) and Norwich City (12.45) in the East League at Bury while at home in their respective EHB Cups the U16 Boys play Ipswich (12.00) and the U18 Boys take on Bury (2.00). Best wishes as usual to all our teams this weekend. Please see website for all fixtures.
News and comments in brief
· Good luck to the England Ladies' and Men's squads in the troubled Commonwealth Games.
· At Weybread last Saturday it was good to see Tom Sumner (who is now working in Lyons and getting to grips with the French language) and Neil and Anna Toulson with baby Alexis. Anna's comeback was, sadly, cut short by injury in the warm-up!
· Lowestoft Town have, unfortunately, withdrawn from East League 4 NE meaning that our Men's 5ths now have no game on 30 October or 19 February.
NB. CURRY-OKE IN THE CLUBHOUSE THIS SATURDAY (7.30PM). PLEASE COME!!

Harleston magpies Mens 4ths vs Dereham 3rds - Lost 1 - 0
Magpies were unable to repeat their previous weeks friendly win over Dereham 3rds despite a spirited efforted in their first Division 3NE league match of the season. Magpies opted for a younger team this week welcoming Sam Ashurst, Josh Fitzgerald and Toby Williamson into the squad but Derehams older approach to team selection proved decisive with just too much knowledge and experience on the pitch for Magpies to compete with. Despite defending well Magpies eventually conceed a goal early in the second half from which they were unable to recover. Sam Ashurst came close to bringing the scores level in open play and then again from a short corner but otherwise Derehams strong defensive play kept Magpies at bay.

East Hockey Leagues Division 2N
After 5 years of local league hockey, Harleston Magpies 3rd XI returned to regional hockey by making the 2-hour trip to Spalding, Lincolnshire. The increased commitment to travel has meant big changes in the Magpies team with only 3 regular players remaining from last year’s promotion winning season. However, the new side has a bit more youth and energy to it, attributes that will come in very handy judging by this opening fixture.
Having also been promoted last year Spalding 1st XI sent out a confident team followed by a very supportive crowd. Early Magpies pressure quietened the Spalding followers and this early possession brought its reward when Phil Cobbald converted a penalty stroke. The home side weren’t to be outdone however, and equalised from a short corner before halftime. The second half followed a similar pattern when Matt Brand turned in a goal end at the end of a good Harleston move, only to see it cancelled out from a Spalding short corner. Both goalkeepers put in fine performances to keep the game level as with John Livings getting the captain’s vote as Harleston player of the Match.

Early goal sitches up magpies
Harleston Magpies 0 - 1 Holcombe
Harleston Magpies travelled to Holcombe with high hopes of recreating the form that saw them beat Southgate in their opening game of the season. Magpies were without midfield rock Richard Gill but captain Dave Ling stepped into the position confidently. Magpies started the game slowly and after a quick break from Holcombe they conceded a sloppy short corner. Holcombe took full advantage of this and took a 1-0 lead despite Tristan Baynes getting a stick to the ball. Going a goal down galvanised Magpies and they renewed their efforts piling the pressure on the Holcombe defence but without result. At the start of the second half Magpies renewed their pressure and James Fanger was unlucky not to score an early equaliser after a smart save from the Holcombe keeper. The game hung in the balance with both teams countering well until Man of the Match Carl Sitch was cruelly sin binned for a stick tackle. Magpies battled on with Andy Hipwell forcing another save from the Holcombe keeper but despite continued pressure Holcombe held on for a victory that they will be pleased to have achieved.

Magpies Girls Development met Pelicans at home on Saturday. After a slow start Niole Eaves had a shot at goal, saved by the Pelicans goalie. Emily McCluskey passed a lovely ball onto Kara Kilbourn enabling her to score the first goal, followed shortly by some more great passing between the two with a nice goal from Emily. Kara follwed this up with 3 more goals. Pelicans managed to penetrate through our tight defence to claw one gaol back . Sophie Long scored a super last goal of the match making the score 6-1 to a well deserved development team.

Harleston Magpies Men’s 5ths 19 Pelicans Men’s 3rds 0
For the first league match of the season Harleston Men’s 5ths travelled away to Kings Lynn to play Pelicans 3rds. Due to injuries late in the week Paul Shelley and Luke Prest were unavailable and so Magpies were limited to only an 11 man squad.
Harleston dominated from the start with solid passing play, creating many chances, and pinning Pelicans into their own half. A number of goal scoring opportunities were missed early on, due to some fantastic saves by the Pelicans keeper, but Harleston kept the tempo high and recognised that with continued pressure a goal would come. After the first goal was scored the flood gates opened and Harleston were scoring goals freely in open play and from set pieces. At half time the score stood at 8-0.
In the second half it was more of the same and Harleston did not let up the pressure. The goals kept coming and the pairing of Rob Goodson and Eddie Thorne controlling midfield always had Harleston on the front foot. 8 of the 10 outfield players found themselves on the score sheet with most notable tallies from Roger Kent, George Moore, and Deben Nelson who scored 6, 5 and 3 goals respectively.
Although beaten early on the Pelicans team never gave up and continued to battle hard until the final whistle. Full time score Harleston 19: Pelicans 0.

Harleston Magpies Ladies 1sts 0-2 Surbiton
Magpies Ladies 1st team welcomed Surbiton to Harleston in their first home league game of the season. The Ladies knew that this was going to be a tough fixture with Surbiton winning 5-1 the previous week and Magpies were without Bryony Lund who was unavailable due to a family wedding.
During the first half, Magpies defended well and absorbed considerable pressure from the opposition. However, they conceded just before half time when Helen Grant cut through several of Magpies players before scoring from a tight angle at the top of the circle. Magpies continued to battle hard throughout the second half, with Debbie Francis picking off important tackles in midfield and Charlotte Lee-Smith having another solid game in goal, pulling off some important saves to keep Magpies in the game. Charlotte Harrison and Emily Wilford troubled the Surbiton defence down the left flanks and orchestrated some of the best attacks of the game. Surbiton's second goal came 10 minutes from the end after another incisive run from the Surbiton forwards, enabling an easy finish on the post from Vicky Bryant.
Magpies can be encouraged by a much improved performance from the previous week and will look to continue building on this performance when they face Horsham away next Sunday.

Magpies started brightly against a much more experienced side who had the advantage of two home umpires. Despite some good team play, individual efforts and some stalwart defending from the Magpies defence they soon went a goal down. Some interesting decisions provided the opposition with some short corner opportunities with Kristina Erith making some good saves, but Magpies went 2 - 0 down. A well struck corner from Kira Wooltorton saw Sophie Podd turn the ball in on the post but it was adjudged to have not gone outside the 'D'! Magpies went 3-0 down despite some good tackling in defence by Sophie Moore and Georgie Scott, whilst the midfield of Becky Banham, Hannah Booty and Kira Wooltorton had to work really hard to keep up the with game. Kira made some good forward moves and Hannah Linger and Lucy Crawford were determined on the attack but it was not until Lottie Nixon turned the ball into the goal that Magpies put the opposition on the back foot. Magpies attacked well in the second half and positionally looked the superior team and another short corner nearly saw them get one back just before the final whistle.
The team should be proud of their performance against much more experienced opposition with many players facing their first match in Premier Norfolk having played in Division 2 or Development leagues last year.

Magpies Ladies IV 2 - 0 Magpies Ladies V
The Ladies 4th's first league match of the season saw them facing Magpies Ladies 5th's; certainly a game both sides would very much want to win!
The first half saw the 4th's take the early initiative, winning any fifty fifty balls and making some positive attacking plays into the 5th's defensive third. The 4th's got their deserved breakthrough when a Laura Schultheiss shot from a short corner fell to Rosie 'Roo' Barker well-positioned on the penalty spot to slot the ball home. The 4th's continued to enjoy the majority of possession, and another short corner ended with another Barker goal, from the same position as her first!
The second half, however, was a different story. The 4th's seemed to lose their shape somewhat and the 5th's were having much more possession, with most of the play happening in the 4th's defensive third. The 4th's held strong though, the defence battling to stop any shots on goal, with Karen Hunt, Claire Snelling, Bella Hall, Sarah Legg, Megg Eglington and Ginny Crawford making valuable contributions. Mention also for Beth Alexander playing left forward who tirelessly battled back to defend. Credit must go to the 5th's who never gave up until the final whistle.
A brilliant start to the league season for the 4th's, an important three points and a deserved victory. Well done girls!
Kay Dennis, Magpies Ladies 4th's.
Dereham 6th 0 Harleston Magpies 7th 3
Does rebranding improve the product? Are Starburst better than Opal fruits? Is Aviva better than Norwich Union? Will Magpies 7th have more success than the Vets did? These were the questions as Magpies 7th embarked on the season.
Murray Graham has taken on the captaincy role. It has long been realised that the team had played better the further the ball was kept away from the captain hence the logical step of the goalkeeper taking over the reins.
So with some old faces augmented by youth magpies started off brightly against Dereham and took the lead in approximately the time it could Lancashire to lose three wickets against Nottingham last week- the other words very quickly.
The other notable event of the first half was an overhead that veered off at an angle of 45 degrees to the touchline, cleared the dug out and the leylandii hedge. The rumour that this occurred at exactly the minute as told to a Sun journalist the previous day has been refuted by all concerned.
Magpies scored two further goals – one with a classic Roger Kent mishit that deceived the goalkeeper and ran out comfortable winners though it has to be said that Dereham's youngsters never gave up and showed good skills throughout
Next week the serious business of the league starts.
Apologies for not mentioning the other goalscorers I was obviously too far behind play to see.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1 WEEKEND PREVIEW
Harleston Magpies Ladies are at home this Saturday when they take on Surbiton in their East Conference League game with the match starting at 12.00. After Magpies made the worst possible start last week by losing 5-0 away to Chelmsford they will need to raise their performance considerably this weekend when they face a very difficult game against Surbiton.
Surbiton are newly promoted but they have made their intentions clear by recruiting well in the summer to strengthen their squad and started by beating Dereham 5-1 at home. Helen Grant the former Great Britain forward is included in their squad. Surbiton could well be one of the teams to watch this season.

Magpies know that scoring goals will be a challenge this season having lost three forwards from last season, so they are very pleased to welcome back Anna Toulson for her first game of the season after having had a baby in the summer. Defensively and in midfield the team has not changed that much so last weeks score line was very surprising and every player will need to raise their level considerably.

Dereham 3rds vs Harleston Magpies Mens 4ths 1-4 Win
Harleston Magpies Mens 4ths pre-season came to an end with an enjoyable training match with Dereham 3rds. Both teams used the opportunity to test new players and bring back a few old friends however it was Magpies Mitchell Tomkins on his debut for the 4ths who out shown everyone bringing some pace to the Magpies attack and deservedly scoring a quick brace to settle the tie. Toby Hughes impressed in a new midfield role yet still managed to find the back of the net and Chris Barber completed Magpies score line. Dereham continued to work hard and their efforts finally paid off with a consolation goal in the final third of the game, shaking off their pre-season rustiness in readiness for next weekend when both these teams will meet again in their opening league match.

Magpies Off To a Fine Start
Magpies ,commenced their national league season with a home win against Southgate. The visitors finished third in the table last season and so this looks to be a good result. Magpies could well have won by a greater margin but had goalkeeper Richard Harms to thank for crucial saves which kept the Norfolk side in the game during the periods of Southgate supremacy.
This week Magpies travel to Holcombe, a side who adapt very well to their own pitch which is bobbly and makes a short passing game somewhat difficult. Whilst Magpies will not want to change their pattern of play, they will hope their work rate and fitness will stand them in good stead . Last weekend Holcombe secured a point at newly promoted St Albans, a side Magpies played and beat convincingly in a pre-season friendly.
Pete Bale and Richard Gill will not make the trip to Holcolmbe however Stuart Leate and Jamie Legg both fit following injury are in the party.
Team to be selected from : Richard Harms;David Ling(Capt);Andy Hipwell;Tristan Baynes;Mark Wheelhouse;Simon Hipwell;Toby Tibbenham;Carl Sitch;Will Martin;Callum Callinan;Duncan Graves;Dan Legg;Ben Wright;Jamie Legg;Stuart Leate;Jamie Legg;Gareth Furlong.

GOALFEST AT WEYBREAD
We had goals galore at Weybread last weekend – no less than 57 in 7 games! Five of the seven games were friendlies before all our teams are in league action this coming Saturday. The goalfest presented my small and dedicated team of scoreboard operators with an early season test of their concentration and dexterity and I'm pleased to say they came through with flying colours!
The Ladies' 3rds got Saturday off to a good start with a 6-0 win over Watton 2nds and next up were the Men's 6ths who beat Dereham 5ths 4-2 helped by two rocket-like goals by skipper Kevin Ridley. The Men's 2nds came from behind to beat Long Sutton 6-3 assisted by a couple of goals by Martin Fields and a well taken effort by Robbie Kinsella who has started the season in fine form. However, the icing on the goal scoring cake was the clash between the Men's 3rds and Dereham 2nds, who included former Magpie Mark Braybrook, and from 3-3 at half time the game eventually finished 6-6. Did I hear a reference to spot-betting on the touchline?!
But in many ways the most significant match on Saturday was the first game for Magpies in the inaugural Norfolk Boys' Development League when they played Dereham. Teams are allowed two adults, as in the comparable Girls' league, but we went with just David Brook giving excellent on-pitch guidance to his young team-mates. In an excellent game with plenty of promising hockey being played Magpies went behind before Tristan Hipper had the distinction of scoring the first goal for his team just before half time. He added another in the second half and although Soloman Barker later put Magpies 3-2 up after a second Dereham goal, three goals late in the game gave a strong Dereham side, with two adults, a 5-3 win in a league where just playing must always be more important than the results.
The goals continued on Sunday when a strong Men's Vets side beat Southgate 12-0 with hat-tricks from Martin Reader (all from a yard out!) and David Blackmore before the Men's 1sts got their league season off to the perfect start by beating Southgate 3-1. In the squad's best performance since returning to the national league at the start of last season it was particularly pleasing to note the impressive performances of Duncan Graves (after his illness), Richard Harms (outstanding in goal), Will Martin (on his league debut) and Carl Sitch and Toby Tibbenham on their return to the club. This Saturday the squad will hope to build on this fine win when they travel to play Kent side Holcombe (2.00).
The Ladies' 1sts have centre stage at Weybread on Saturday when they take on newly-promoted Surbiton - who are coached by former GB and England international Brett Garrard - and they will hope to put their 5-0 defeat at Chelmsford firmly behind them. Please note the game starts at 12 noon and not 12.30pm. Other home matches include the Ladies' 2nds who entertain Pelicans (2.15) after their promising 2-1 league win away to Ipswich 3rds; the Men's 2nds who play Dereham (1.45), now coached by former Magpie Peter Hogg, and the Girls' Development who play Pelicans (12.15) after their 0-0 away league draw with Dereham last Saturday.
Good luck to all our teams in action this Saturday including the Ladies' 4ths and 5ths who play each other at 10.00am (not 10.30am). Please see the Home Page of the website for a full list of fixtures.
Each year we say a reluctant farewell and very best wishes for their studies and hockey to members going off to university for the first time. This year they are Clemmie Ardley-Forder, Artemis Clark, Calianne Clark, Ben Gowing, Lucie Hadley, Cherry Seaborn (who unfortunately is out of action with a broken finger), Craig Snelling, Duncan Steven, Louis Steven and Jessie Withers. They know they will always be very welcome back at the club during and at the end of their studies. Also going to university with our best wishes are Katrina Warnes and Siobhan Wooltorton who is now thankfully recovered from her long-term injury. I am pleased to say that Katrina and Siobhan will still be able to play for the club.
The England Hockey Board (I must say I'm still coming to terms with this new title for England Hockey) rightly adopts a zero tolerance policy to doping offences in our sport and this has been highlighted by the two-year ban given to a player following a dope test after a league match in March 2010. Anabolic steroids were found in his urine sample. Please see the EHB's website for full details.

Harleston Magpies mens 1st V Southgate mens 1st
3 – 1
"Brilliant Harm's thwart's Southgate"
Harleston welcomed Southgate to Shotford Heath for their opening league game of the season.
It was a bright opening to the game by the home team as they forced an early goal line clearance. The game then flowed from one end to the other with neither team creating clear cut chances. Then midway through the half with a well worked goal Harleston took the lead through Duncan Graves. This spurred Harleston on as they started to dominate the possession and create more goal scoring chances.
As half time drew close Southgate started to respond applying good pressure on the Magpies back line. The pressure resulted in two good goal scoring opportunities which the brilliant on the day Richard Harms thwarted with a double save. Southgate were then reduced to ten as they received a yellow card for constant team foul play. Magpies lead 1-0 going into break.
The second half started slowly with Southgate still down to ten men. As the game built in pace it once again flowed from one end to the other with neither creating clear cut goal scoring chances. Once again Harleston found away through with Tibenham tipping the ball to James Fanger to tap home at the back post extending the lead to 2-0. This seemed to stun Southgate as once again they were reduced to ten as they received another yellow card. As the game went on Southgate started to push, throwing more men forward which resulted in a couple of short corners with 10 minutes to go. Second of these resulted in a penalty stroke being given following a block on the line. This was dispatched bringing Southgate back into the game at 2-1.
More ill discipline saw the Southgate captain receive his second yellow of the match. Magpies capitalised putting the game out of reach with Andy Hipwell bravely diverting the ball into the Southgate goal as the defender tried to clear. This made it 3-1 with only minutes to go. Harleston defended the final few minutes well as they had all game.

Magpies girls development opened their league games with a 0-0 draw against a strong Dereham team.
Lead by Hattie Underdown our youngsters who were joined by 3 more experienced players kept Dereham out of the magpies half defending very well, Magpies pushed on and created many chances but were denied that winning goal.
Our young team showed much promise and we are sure they will improve at the season continues and look forward to some exciting play. Well done girls!

Harleston Magpies 3 – Dereham 5
Team:
Jordan Wiseman (GK), Jack Heydon, Jack Frere-Smith, Ed Martin, Bertie Blandy, Harry Murton, William Hunt, Toby McManus, Tristan Hipper, Soloman Barker & David Brook
Magpies boys played their first match in the new development league and were unlucky to lose a very close game against Dereham. Both sides played some good hockey in the first half with Jordan making a number of good saves before finally conceding a goal from a short-corner. However, Magpies had also created a number of chances and Tristan Hipper scored the equalising goal latching onto a pin-point pass from Ed Martin. Half-time score 1-1.
The second half continued in similar vein with both sides continuing to pass the ball well and both defences working hard. Magpies eventually edged in front when Tristan scored his second goal but Dereham immediately hit back to make it 2-2. With about five minutes left Soloman Barker scored after a great run from William Hunt but, again, Dereham quickly equalised. With a draw looking the most likely result Magpies lost concentration in defence allowing Dereham to grab a fourth goal and, as they went searching for the equaliser, Dereham scored on the break to seal the victory. Despite losing, this was a very good performance especially given all the boys playing their first full game for Magpies.

Harleston Magpies Ladies 1sts 0-5 Chelmsford
Harleston Ladies 1st team suffered a heavy defeat in their first league game of the season away to Chelmsford. Magpies started well and had a good initial spell with some nice passages of play down the flanks between midfield and forwards. Verity Blyth made some good runs into space which put the Chelmsford defence under pressure, however, Magpies were unable to make anything of the possession and pose any real threat to the Chelmsford keeper. After 18 minutes, Chelmsford broke the deadlock to lead 1-0, which was a disappointing blow to Magpies after a clean tackle was controversially awarded a penalty corner.
The final score line was dictated by a poor 6 minute spell in which three goals were scored in quick succession. Chelmsford proved to be dangerous on the counter attack throughout the second half and Magpies struggled to deal with incisive runs through from the forwards. Charlotte Lee-Smith in goal made some important saves throughout the game to prevent the score line being greater. In the final few minutes Chelmsford sealed their victory by converting a penalty corner. This was a steep learning curve for Magpies, who will need to regroup and look to start afresh next week at home to Surbiton and build on the positive pre-season results from the previous weeks.

Broadland II 6 - 3 Magpies Ladies IV
Magpies travelled to Taverham to play Broadland in a friendly, their first friendly of the season, and their last before league matches commence next week! With a different looking side to last year, and no goalkeeper, Magpies knew it was going to be a tough game.
However, the away side started well, with encouraging moves into Broadland's defensive third and some shots on goal, enjoying the majority of possession for the first quarter. It was Broadland, though, that took the early lead, a good pass slicing the Magpies defence leaving an goal open for the shot. Magpies responded well, with Karen Absolon taking up a good position in the D to draw the away side level. Broadland, however, continued to take of advantage of no goalkeeper to beat, and went 3 - 1 up going into half time.
The second half saw Broadland first extend their lead before Absolon got her second goal, making it 4 -2. Karen Hunt at the back for Magpies did a sterling job as the last line of defence with several crucial tackles but Broadland soon made it 6 - 2, before Kay Dennis pulled one back for Magpies, a sweeping shot into the far corner following a good long corner move.
All things considered, Magpies must be proud of their efforts, a 6 - 3 loss by no means anything to be disheartened with, allowing for no goalkeeper and a much changed team. Well done to all 12 players involved.
Kay Dennis, Magpies Ladies 4th's.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1 WEEKEND PREVIEW
Harleston Magpies Ladies 1st team return to English Hockey League action this Saturday in the East Conference when they play a difficult away fixture at Chelmsford starting at 12.00. Last season Magpies were neck and neck with Chelmford most of the season with Magpies finally finishing fourth in the League one place behind Chelmsford.
Following last season goalkeeper Lucy Hyman has retired, although she will continue her involvement with the team in a coaching capacity and hopefully will also be available in the event of an emergency. Charlotte Lee-Smith is welcomed back to the Club and will take over in goal having played for Norwich Dragons last season and prior to that played for Ipswich when they were in the Premier League.
The nucleus of the team is still there from last season and will again be Captained by Louisa Greenacre with Debbie Francis as Vice Captain. Leigh Sitch has taken over as Coach and we wish him well in his first season. The main concern for the team will be the loss of three forwards from last season with Cherry Seaborn going to Durham University, Artemis Clark to Loughborough University and Angie Wheelhouse, who has been a prolific goal scorer over the years being unavailable as she is pregnant. This will involve changes to the team and opportunities for other players to take their chance and it may take awhile for the team to adjust.
The pre season friendlies have gone well with matches against Northampton, Cambridge City, Barnes/Hounslow and Horsham. The team was unbeaten in pre season but two 0-0 draws in good performances shows that scoring goals will be the area receiving the most attention.
SQUAD:
Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Charlotte Lee-Smith, France Sumner, Lucy Fields, Bryony Lund, Katrina Warnes, Debbie Francis, Charlotte Harrison, Ellie Bale, Charlotte Catalano, Verity Blyth, Jess Howland, Lauren Barber and Jas Bartlett.

LEAGUE START FOR SUPER SIX
After last weekend's fourteen friendly matches
(7 won, 4 drawn and 3 lost) the season takes a big step forward this
coming weekend with six of our teams in league action for the first time
while the other nine have their final friendlies in preparation for
their turn on the starting line on Saturday week.
The six league games this weekend include the young Ladies' 1sts
who kick off their twelfth successive national league campaign (in this
spell) away to Chelmsford on Saturday (12.00) under new coach Leigh
Sitch after a promising build-up. A big challenge for the squad will be
compensating for the loss of three players - namely Angie Wheelhouse,
Cherry Seaborn and Artemis Clark - who contributed 25 of their 33 goals
last season. I will say more about these members and the other losses to
the squad in due course. Meantime the Ladies' 2nds are away to Ipswich 3rds (2.00) encouraged by their 5-2 win last Saturday over Watton and the Ladies' 6ths entertain Thetford 2nds (12.30).
Also on Saturday the Girls' Development start their fourth league campaign (the previous three saw Magpies finish as champions) at Dereham (11.15) while the brand new Boys' Development League
gets underway with our team managed by Stuart Peters taking on Dereham
at Weybread (10.30). The benefits of the Girls' Dev League is clear when
one sees the progress made by many of our players who have moved up to
higher teams since the formation of the league.
Our final league team in action this weekend is the Men's 1sts
who after some good pre-season results entertain Southgate on Sunday
(2.15). Southgate did the double over us last season so some friendly
revenge would not go amiss as the squad embarks on their second season
back in the national league under new chief coach Bill Williams. As a
curtain raiser to the 2.15 game the Men's Vets play Southgate
(11.30) building on the good relationship built up between the two teams
in the Southgate Masters (the new description of Vets hockey)
Tournament won by Magpies during the summer. The bar opens at 12 noon.
Please come along to cheer our teams to victory!
Good luck to all our teams in action this weekend. For a full list please see the club's website
News and comments in brief:
· Congratulations to chief coach Danny Kerry and his England squad on their splendid bronze medal in the Women's World Cup in Argentina.
· Hannah Macleod
who scored for England in the semi-final against Holland won the Chris
Loveday Award in 2001-2 for her outstanding contribution to Schools and
Youth Hockey in the East while at Bedford HC.
· In this season's Men's East Conference
St Albans and Wimbledon join as champions of the East and South
respectively and Wimbledon in particular are likely to pose a big threat
to Magpies as in addition to ex-England and GB player Ben Marsden (as
player/coach) they have signed current England and GB internationals Ben
Hawes and Rob Moore!
· Meantime in the Women's Conference East
Surbiton and Dereham (only the second national league club ever in
Norfolk) are welcomed as South and East champions respectively at the
expense of bottom placed Northampton and Southgate who did not survive
last season's play-offs.
· Members are asked not to practice in the end goals on the two pitches. Please use the side goals to minimise wear and tear on the main circles.
For your social diary please:
· Curry-Oke Night
(Saturday 2 October, 7.30pm) - tickets on sale at the clubhouse bar. If
you buy in advance it helps to encourage the organisers both in morale
and with the catering!

Magpies Start League Campaign
Magpies, completed their build up to the National League season with a visit to the PLUM tournament at Chelmsford where they beat Staines 3-2 and St Albans ,newly promoted to the East Conference, 4-2. A comprehensive victory over Bishops Stortford completed the weekend’s programme.
An extensive range of games have been completed with all squad players getting good pitch time , this will be good experience for the younger players and has given the seasoned campaigners an opportunity to play in different positions. Gareth Furlong returns to the squad following his recent full international debut for Wales. Carl Sitch makes a welcome return to the club whilst on a work placement locally, Toby Tibbenham also returns on a full time basis having returned to the area from University. Duncan Graves fit again following illness, Callum Callinan and Marc Lloyd both have joined the club and all are in the training squad. Will Martin who has come through the club’s youth system is included following encouraging performances in friendlies.
This weekend Southgate are the visitors to Weybread with a 2.15 push back. The visitors are a mixture of youth and experience and will certainly prove a test for the Norfolk side. Magpies Ladies 1st team had their last 2 practice games on Saturday at Old Loughtonians HC ahead of their 1st league match next week away to Chelmsford. Magpies faced Barnes Hounslow and Horsham, both sides in which Magpies have entertained competitive and hard fought games in previous seasons. Both matches ended in a 0-0 draw which was overall a positive day for the team, who put in two solid performances against decent opposition.
Magpies 0-0 Barnes Hounslow
In the first match against Barnes Hounslow, Magpies were forced to re-organise their back line early on after Louisa Greenacre picked up a head injury and didn't return until the 2nd half. Magpies were put under a lot of pressure in the first half and Charlotte-Lee Smith in goal was forced to make some important saves to keep Magpies in the game. The second half saw a more positive performance after they regained their shape and settled into a much better pattern of play, with some good link up play between midfield and forwards. Jess Howland's work rate up front put a lot of pressure on the Hounslow defence and Lucy Miller and Charlotte Harrison linked up well together which almost resulted in a goal late on.

Magpies 0-0 Horsham
The second match against Horsham, which is notoriously physical and a battle again resulted in a solid 0-0 performance. Magpies had the majority of possession and Charlotte Lee-Smith was rarely troubled in goal. Katrina Warnes gave a particularly good performance, picking out key tackles in defence and making some incisive runs through their midfield through to the forwards. This was a competitive match which involved some good battles in midfield and defence with Charlotte Catalano, Siobhan Wooltorton and Lauren Barber all producing good performances with their 2nd week playing in the Ladies 1st team. Debbie Francis continued to feed good balls through to Lucy Miller and Charlotte Harrison who troubled the Horsham defence throughout the 2nd half, almost resulting in a goal from Verity Blyth who was only denied by a save from the keeper. Magpies narrowly missed converting a penalty corner in the last few minutes, after Frances Sumner's strike was saved onto the post by the Hounslow keeper.

Ladies 5ths started their 2010/2011 Season with a friendly away to Yarmouth 2nds - a team they will meet in a few weeks in a League fixture. With nearly all the players from last season moving on and up the Magpies teams this was a completely new set of players with the basis from last years successful Development Squad.
In an even first half Yarmouth went into the break in the lead from a penalty corner strike. having found their feet Magpies came more into the game applying long periods of pressure. Shirley McAllen equalised from a penalty corner before Yarmouth again took the lead from a brakeaway move. With Magpies fitness reaping rewards Kelsey Horlock had a stunning 15 minutes scoring a hat trick to give Magpies a deserved 4 - 2 win.
Team:- Ellie O Sullivan, Frankie Eaves, May Bowden, Laura Davidson, Molly Fuller, Harriet Underdown, Shirley McAllen, Lisa Dobson, Alice Bamber, Rosie Chubbock, Catherine Kilbourn, Rachel Herod, Kelsey Horlock

Harleston Magpies Mens 4ths vs Norwich City 3rds – 7-2 Win
Harleston Magpies Mens 4ths have found some good early season form producing a victory in their first outing, an impressive 7–2 victory over Norwich City 3rds. Despite the convincing score line it was Norwich City 3rds, who play their competitive hockey in a league below Magpies 4ths, who took the lead capitalising on some uncertain defending in front of the Magpies goal and finally beating debutant keeper James Graham with a close range snap shot.
Magpies responded well to this early set back, gaining confidence in defence and control of the midfield which opened up many scoring opportunities. By half time Magpies had made it 3 – 1 and eventually ran out comfortable winners, goals coming from Richard Larking, Andy Caston, Stuart Peters, Elliot Smith and a hat-trick from Toby Hughes showing some good early form and fitness. A well worked second for Norwich late in the game completed the score line.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM REPORT
NORTHAMPTON 1 HARLESTON MAGPIES 3
Magpies participated in a very useful triangular Tournament at Cambridge where they were able to assess their level of fitness, experiment positionally and also to give an opportunity to five young players.
Magpies started well and with Frances Sumner putting away an early penalty corner the confidence started to flow through the team. Northampton were soon level when a mistimed tackle saw Northampton awarded a penalty stroke which gave Charlotte Lee-Smith in goal no chance. Magpies were soon back in front from another penalty corner as Debbie Francis was first to react to put away a rebound from the goalkeepers pads. Both Charlotte Catalano and Lauren Barber looked solid in defence, whilst Lucy Chubbock put in a hard stint up front. The experiment with Lucy Fields playing up front and just behind the strikers showed great promise as she worked hard all day.
In the final 15 minutes of the match Magpies seemed in complete control and victory was assured as Bryony Lund beat the goalkeeper from the top of the circle to complete the scoring.
CAMBRIDGE CITY 0 HARLESTON MAGPIES 1
After just a half hour break Magpies played Cambridge City who are in the same League as them this season. Magpies started very well with the passing looking much crisper and composed than in the first game and once again took the lead in the first half when Frances Sumner scored from a penalty corner. Amy Brook played a very solid game at left defender whilst Siobhan Wooltorton who was played out of position as support striker to help the team, finally had her chance at left midfield. Katrina Warnes who played in defence also did her stint as support striker. Ellie Bale was looking very accomplished at right midfield.
With a number of positional changes going on Magpies kept their shape well and Charlotte Lee- Smith was only called upon to make a few saves.
At the other end Verity Blyth and Lucy Fields combined well to create a few chances but Magpies were unable to add to the score line. Captain Louisa Greenacre marshalled a defence well throughout the day as a number of young players were given their chance.
Next weekend Magpies play Horsham and Hounslow at the Plum Tournament.
SQUAD: Louisa Greenacre, Charlotte Lee-Smith, Charlotte Catalano, Katrina Warnes, Amy Brook, Lauren Barber, Debbie McAllen, Frances Sumner, Bryony Lund, Siobhan Wooltorton, Ellie Bale, Lucy Fields, Lucy Chubbock and Verity Blyth.

Invaluable sponsorship support once again
As the new season proper draws ever nearer I am pleased to announce that our main sponsors are kindly supporting us once again. They are Hunton Legg (R.G.) Ltd, Kitchen Sense of Harleston, Banham Graham, Larking Gowen and www.WaveneyValleyBlog.com. Our thanks are due, respectively, to Mark and Annie Legg, Val and Sue Tolhurst, James Banham and Murray Graham, Brian Pring and Nigel Bedingfield. Their support and that of all the other friends of the club who help us by way of pitchside advertising boards and advertisements is invaluable in the general running of the club and in the development of our facilities.
If you know of any business which might be interested in having a pitchside advertising board please let me know.
Congratulations to:
· Gareth Furlong, last season HMHC's young player of the year, on his selection to play, in a very busy summer, for Wales U18s (as captain), for Wales U21 in the Celtic Cup in Belfast and in the EuroHockey Junior Nations Tournament in Vienna (where the team finished second to Scotland gaining promotion to the Championship) and for the Wales senior squad for the Test series against the USA in Cardiff.
· England on reaching the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup in Argentina where they will meet, almost certainly, Holland on Thursday. The England coach is ex-Pelicans HC member Danny Kerry.
· Richard (Ratty) Alexander, ex-HMHC, on his selection to play for England in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India between 3 and 14 October.
News and comments in brief:
· Some enjoyable inter-club games were played at Weybread last Saturday and our thanks go to Philippa and Julian Taylor for their organisation of the BBQ and Graham Clark and Mary Wright for the running of the BBQ. Two sausages and a roll for £1 was excellent value!
· This Saturday sees most of our teams in friendly action as they continue to prepare for the new season with ten of our teams playing at home. Please see the Home Page of the website for the full list of matches. Meantime the two 1st teams are away on Saturday following their encouraging results last weekend when the Ladies beat Northampton 3-1 and Cambridge City 1-0 and the Men lost 3-1 and drew 3-3 with Canterbury, last season's Conference East champions. This Saturday the Ladies are at the PLUM tournament at Old Loughtonians and the Men play Staines and St Albans at Chelmsford. The Men are in action again on Sunday playing Bishops Stortford at home at 1.00pm.
· Best wishes to all our team captains for the coming season including those in charge for the first time, namely Melissa Hunter (2nds), Kristina Erith (4ths), David Ling (1sts), Matt Brand (3rds), Will Main (5ths) and Murray Graham (7ths).
· The Men's 7th team replaces the Men's Veterans due to the lack of players available for the latter team. The Veterans will, however, continue to play in the England Hockey Masters Over 40s Cup and they play Norwich City at home in the first round on Sunday 10 October.
· Tom Hart has unfortunately suffered a bad knee injury playing mixed hockey during the summer and could well be out of action for many months.
· Mariette Rix who played a starring role for South Africa in their 2-1 defeat by England in the Women's World Cup at the weekend played in goal for Ipswich against Magpies at home last season in a game made memorable by monsoon-like rain which halted proceedings for some fifteen minutes.
· When members pay their annual sub (and if relevant your training fee) they will receive a copy of the club handbook to treasure! I thank Irene Bicker and Merna Merrett and everyone else who provided information for inclusion.
