Florence Barker from the small Suffolk village of Mendham, famous as the birthplace of Sir Alfred Munnings, has been awarded a coveted place at the Royal Ballet Junior School. She is due to start in September this year.

Florence is just twelve years old and has been keen on dance since a very early age, having started lessons as a three year old in the Liz Lee's dance studio above Owle's Warehouse in Bungay. Florence's brother, Sol, is an enthusiastic young member of HMHC.

In order to take up her place, Flo's parents have to fund part of the annual school fees. Family and friends are rallying to support them, and close friends Tim and Kate Carless and Stuart and Helen Naunton have organised an Auction Of Promises, which is to be held on Saturday June 12th at Wortwell Community Centre.

Lots already pledged from local individuals and businesses include: use of holiday homes in France, Turkey, Southwold and Aldeburgh; pleasure flights in aircraft and a hot air balloon; an opportunity to hand feed calves and help in the milking parlour at milking time; a magnum of vintage champagne; a load of farm-yard manure for the garden or allotment; dinner for six people; lots of home-made cakes; a champagne picnic and much, much more.

This should be a fun evening with entry by ticket only @ £10.00 to include buffet and some drinks with all proceeds going to support Florence. There will also be a licensed bar available.

To support this event, and help this young local girl to realise her ambition and dreams of becoming a ballet dancer, please ask for a catalogue or tickets from Kate and Tim Carless (01379 588090) or Helen and Stuart Naunton (01986 782214).

HARLESTON MAGPIES YOUTH END OF SEASON PRESENTATION EVENING

Harleston Magpies Youth section held their end of season evening on Friday May 14th attended by over 85 youngsters who played in the matches plus umpires, parents and helpers. The weather was kind and a round robin of matches was played in two Tournaments starting at 6.30pm. In the U11 Girls and Under 9 Boys combined Tournament there were four teams namely Tigers, Lions, Bears and Panthers. (One complaint as to why the Lions were playing in green bibs!). The older players had seven teams and also played a similar format.

After the matches the Youth Committee provided some hot food for all the playing members. Thanks to Kirstin and her team for all the food.

After everyone had eaten, the presentations began with team managers giving a brief report on the ups and downs of the season and finally the trophies were presented as follows:

UNDER 9s MINI HOCKEY TOURNAMENTS

SAT MAY 8th AT NORWICH CITY

Magpies opening match turned out to be against the winners which was a tough start. Magpies took the lead and although Norwich pressed hard to equalise a couple of excellent saves by goalkeeper Freddie Dixon ensured they came close to winning, but unfortunately Norwich scored a late equaliser. Magpies won their next three matches comfortably with Alex Kilbourn and Sam McCluskey dominant, but well supported by Alfie Burton and the team scored some excellent goals. Seth Read played a very steady sweeper throughout the Tournament.

The Girls Anna Kilbourn, Hattie Allen-Smith and Leah Horlock had to play all the time as unfortunately Sophie Pearson was ill, but considering their lack of experience they grew in confidence throughout the Tournament.

Against the weaker Norwich side Magpies just could not score despite several chances and in the end a 0-0 result cost them a chance of finishing first. Magpies finished the Tournament strongly beating Watton 5-0 to finish a very creditable second.

SUNDAY MAY 9TH AT WATTON

Magpies were back in action again on Sunday with plenty of changes to the team from the previous day. Lucy Westmacott came into the team as goalkeeper, with Lottie Summers, Martha Lawrence, Hannah Dobson and Molly Warnes all making their first appearances of the weekend. On the Boys side Todd Chapman also made his first appearance.

Magpies made a steady start beating Pelicans 2-0. The next game up was Norwich City 1 and after a cautious start Magpies hit a real purple patch and deservedly took the lead and looked the most likely team to score next. Unfortunately Magpies over stretched themselves looking for the second goal and were badly short of numbers when Norwich counter attacked and they levelled the scores. In a terrific match either team could have won the match but it was Norwich who scored a late winner.

Despite Magpies wining their next five matches they could not catch Norwich and finished a very strong second. Lottie Summers chipped in with plenty of goals, while Martha Lawrence put in some very steady performances. Hannah Dobson, Molly Warnes, Lucy Westmacott, and Todd Chapman all gained valuable Tournament experience.

Throughout the two Tournaments Sam McCluskey and Alex Kilbourn put in some impressive performances for the team.
