Norwich Dragons III 3 - 2 Magpies Ladies IV

After their fantastic results of the previous two weeks Magpies were looking to continue with their winning ways.
Dragons had first push-back, and instead of playing the ball to another team member the Dragons' centre forward dribbled the ball clean through the Magpies midfield and defence, catching them all on the back foot, and coolly slotted the ball past the 'keeper to give the home side the lead in the opening seconds. However, Magpies were not deterred and from the restart they came straight back at Dragons, and a shot on goal fell to a well-positioned Rhiann Earrye at the near post to tap in the equaliser. The play then levelled out somewhat with both teams getting into their groove and settling down, but it was Dragons who took the initiative and went 2-1 up midway through the half, with Magpies struggling to find their previous good form.
The second half saw Magpies step up the pace and pose a real threat to the Dragons goal, but the home side once again had that killer instinct in the D and extended their lead. Magpies showed great determination towards the end of the match, and got a goal back from a good move ending with Rhiann Earrye's second goal. It seemed as though the equaliser was on the way, and in the final moments a good move down the right wing, followed by a stinging cross into the D had Dragons on the back foot, but a Magpies stick couldn't connect with it.
A hard fought game, with Magpies putting in a good performance, and if only they'd had another ten minutes of play they could have had them! The squad must now rest up for next weekend's tough back to back fixtures.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM WEEKEND PREVIEW

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kitchen Sense play St Albans away on Saturday starting at 1.30 in their English Hockey League game. After a run of four League games without a win Magpies finally turned the corner last week beating third placed Horsham 1-0 with a much improved performance and hopefully this will create some momentum for the rest of the season.

This win saw Magpies move into third place ahead of Horsham on goal difference and now they can look forward to the game away at St Albans knowing that they need to reproduce the same level of intensity they showed last week.

St Albans are in seventh position on eleven points just above the relegation zone and twelve points behind Magpies. As Magpies lost to the bottom team Northampton two weeks ago they will know to their cost that every team will be fighting hard especially on their own pitch and every point will have to be earned. St Albans will be looking for the win that will pull them away from the relegation zone.

In the earlier game this season Magpies beat St Albans 5-1 but Magpies also beat Northampton 5-0 and lost the return game. The last time Magpies played St Albans away they were on the receiving end of a five goal defeat to St Albans, so previous results are irrelevant and misleading.

Magpies should be at full strength.

SQUAD: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Lucy Hayman, Lucy Fields, Katrina Warnes, Bryony Lund, Charlotte Harrison, Ellie Bale, Debbie McAllen, Frances Sumner, Emily Wilford, Cherry Seaborn, Verity Blyth and Angie Wheelhouse
Magpies in Eight Goal thriller

Magpies returned home from a trip to Bromley in good heart having taken part in an eight goal thriller giving both sides a point, and therefore keeping the gap of four points between Magpies and Bromley ,who sit eighth and one position above relegation play offs. Magpies had taken time to adjust to the pitch but had gained the lead and it was not until the last few minutes that they had surrendered the lead . With but seven minutes to the final whistle the Norfolk side had gone behind, however they replied within a minute to even the score and secure a point.

This weekend joint leaders Canterbury visit Magpies on Sunday 2.15 pm for what promises to be a most entertaining game. Whilst a number of sides contain internationals none are likely to influence a game as much as Canterbury’s Kwan Browne who is equally effective in defence or attack. In the away game Magpies were unlucky to return pointless and it was only his influence that kept the Kent side in the game in the last quarter.

Mark Wheelhouse and Neil Toulson are likely to return to the line up with Simon Hipwell not available.

Squad: From Richard Harms;John Livings;Gareth Furlong;David Ling;Leigh Sitch;Stuart Leate;Richard Gill;Pete Bale;Andy Hipwell;Tristan Baynes;Duncan Graves;James Fanger;,Ben Wright; Richard Ling;Mark Wheelhouse,Mark Wheelhouse,Jamie Legg.
Harleston Magpies mens 2s travelled to league leaders Wapping on Saturday looking to reignite their promotion push after the recent bad weather and a disappointing result away at Cambridge Nomads left Magpies in 4th place.

The start to the game was fast and furious with both sides cancelling each other out with good attacking hockey. The first chance of the game fell to a Wapping forward who turned quickly and fired off a reverse stick shot only for it to be tipped over the bar by Livings in goal. Wapping eventually took the lead after a sustained amount of pressure. Miscommunication at the back allowed a Wapping forward to turn on the flick spot and fire past an on-rushing keeper. Despite going behind Magpies continued to push and some good approach play they couldn't find that final ball through to the forwards. Wapping doubled their lead 5 minutes before the break with an excellent penalty corner which left the Magpies defence with no chance. Wapping nearly extended their lead even further when a through ball from the left found the wapping forward at the back post with a first time shot only to be thwarted by Livings at full stretch. The half ended at 2-0 to Wapping which despite the score line Magpies had played some good hockey and had every chance of getting back into the game.

The second half started with Wapping creating yet another chance from the restart when an aerial found its way though to a Wapping forward only for his shot to be saved. This early chance seem to wake Mapgies up and they now started to push forward with a penalty corner of their own from Kinsella only for it to be saved well by the Wapping keeper. Despite Magpies now knocking on the door of Wappings goal it was the home side who extended their lead with another penalty corner which this time left even the best defence with no chance as the ball flew into the angle of the right hand post and crossbar. Any momentum Magpies did have was knocked out of them with that third goal and Wapping pushed forwards for a 4th goal. But a combination of good defensive play and goalkeeping kept Wapping out. With 15 minutes to go Magpies got a goal back through Lawrence Baynes from a penalty corner when the initial shot was saved only to fall to Baynes who swept home to give Magpies a chance of saving something from the game. Magpies were now pushing Wapping back further and further whilst they looked for another goal which would leave only one more goal to level the scores. The second Magpies goal came from Robbie Kinsella and a straight strike into the bottom corner leaving the keeper no chance.

With only minutes to goal and only 1 goal between the teams Wapping started to crumble under the pressure put on them from Magpies and yet another penalty corner proved decisive when Dave Francis swepted home the rebound which leveled the scores. The game ended at 3-3 with emotions of joy from the Magpies players and contempt from the Wapping players as they let a 3 goal lead slip. Man of the match went to John Livings in goal who pulled out his best performance so far this season, although credit must go to the entire Magpies team for such and amazing comeback displaying some of the fantastic hockey which they are know to play but which has been missing in the past few weeks.

GOALS GALORE WITH KAY LEADING THE WAY

There were goals galore last weekend in the matches involving the Ladies' 4ths and the Men's 1sts, 2nds and 3rds and while only the Ladies secured a win there was satisfaction for all four teams. But pride of place must go to the Ladies' 4ths who beat Pelicans 3rds 10-0 with five of the goals coming from Kay Dennis who scored three times in the first twenty minutes. Is this the quickest hat trick by a member this season? Did Martin Fields do better while scoring five for the Men's 2nds against Broxbourne in January?

The Men's 1sts got a good point in their 4-4 away draw against Bromley and Beckenham but after conceding all four goals to penalty corners will need to tighten up on that part of their play when they entertain second placed Canterbury this Sunday (2.15). In Kwan Browne, the Trinidad and Tobago international, Canterbury have without doubt the best player in the East Conference and corner taking is part of his outstanding repertoire of hockey skills.

When Plan A failed the Men's 2nds against Wapping it was just as well they turned to Plan B being three down with fifteen minutes to go! Robbie Kinsella, Lawrence Baynes and Dave Francis then scored to pull off a remarkable 3-3 recovery against the then league leaders (and still clear favourites) down by the River Thames. It is to be hoped that Plan A will have been consigned to the rubbish bin before they host Long Sutton on Saturday (2.15) with victory essential if any hope of promotion is not to be extinguished.

Meantime the Men's 3rds had a much shorter trip to Loddon where they were soon a goal down to championship rivals Norwich Dragons before Matt Brand made it 1-1 at the interval. Magpies, cheered on by their supporters who outnumbered the home 'crowd' by an estimated 20 to 3(!), took temporary control of the match soon after the break with quick goals by Will Martin and Philip Cobbald only for Dragons to force the pace thereafter with the away team rarely showing as an attacking force. But with goalkeeper Ross Briggs making some remarkable saves in the closing stages a win for Magpies looked the likeliest result only for Dragons to score twice in the last four minutes for a draw their fight back deserved. This result leaves both sides still unbeaten this season with Dragons slight favourites to win the league but unless something untoward happens both teams are assured of promotion. Well done to Mark Lewis and his team. This Saturday the 3rds entertain Norwich Dragons 2nds (4.00) looking for plenty of goals which could yet decide the championship.

The Ladies' 1sts deserved their hard fought win over Horsham after dominating the match for long periods only to be let down by their finishing and they nearly paid the price when Horsham hit a post before Cherry Seaborn scored for the ninth time this season with what turned out to be eight nervy minutes remaining. This week the team is away to St Albans who they beat 5-1 in late October with three goals from Angie Wheelhouse and two from Cherry.

The Men's 4ths continued their improved form by beating Ipswich 4ths 5-0 for their third consecutive win and this week they are away to Gorleston (2.30) while the Men's 6ths are away to Ipswich Cranes 2nds (1.00) boosted by their 3-0 win over UEA 3rds. Meantime the Ladies' 2nds return to action after their half term break with an away double-header when they play City of Peterborough in a vital relegation clash on Saturday (1.00) followed by a visit to fourth placed Wisbech on Sunday (11.30 or 1.00). Good luck to all our teams in action this weekend including the Mixed who play Bedford (12.00 away) in the EH Trophy on Sunday and the Men's Veterans who entertain Holcombe on Sunday (11.45) after their match was frozen off last weekend.

Bromley and Beckenham 4 - Harleston 4

Harleston 1st XI sponsored by Hunton Legg made the long trip to Bromley and Beckenham knowing that a win would push them up the table and away from the struggle at the bottom. The opposition were also chasing 3 much needed points to help lift themselves towards safety and had the home advantage.

With both teams desperate to avoid a loss the game was started in a cagey manor with both teams creating little going forwards. Halfway through the first half the stalemate was eventually broken by Magpies when Andy Hipwell converted a penalty corner that was won after a sustained period of pressure applied by the hard working Harleston forwards.

This suddenly forced Bromley into action and they soon equalised from a penalty corner of their own, capitalising on the sudden hail storm. With both the teams now confident of more goals the game became much more open which suited Magpie's superior pace. This extra gear allowed Harleston to regain the lead after a quick break from Ben Wright and fast thinking set up Duncan Graves to clinically finish from the top of the circle for his first goal in 10 games, giving the visitors a deserved 2-1 lead at the break.

The second half once again started with few chances being created as Magpies looked to consolidate their lead. Bromley however had other ideas and with the decisions starting to go their way they once again equalised after Magpies failed to properly deal with a penalty corner. Bromley's joy did not last long as Magpies converted their superior possession into a third goal after a fine break from Tristan Baines and Duncan Graves resulted in a calm finish from James Fanger to open his national league account.

With the game getting more physical Magpies were left to rue a spell of ill discipline during which Andy Hipwell was sin binned and Bromley managed to equalise from a dubious penalty corner to tie the game for the third time. Bromley then used the change of momentum to turn the game on its head by taking the lead for the first time of the game after converting their fourth penalty corner.

With time running out the Bromley supporters seemed to think that the job had been done, but Magpie's were not finished. Straight from the restart Harleston attacked the Bromley circle at pace and drew the scores level with Pete Bale powering through the circle and setting up Graves for an easy second and Magpie's fourth.

With five minutes left Magpies dominated possession and territory and with 2 Bromley players sin binned for breaking down play and violent conduct a deserved win was looking within their grasp. Unfortunately the clock ran out before Magpies could find the elusive winner.

While both teams failed to pick up the 3 points that they both wanted coming into this fixture Magpies will feel the harder done by. On another day with more experienced umpires and a fair share of luck the team could have made sure of maximum points.
WOMENS ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE – EAST CONFERENCE

HARLESTON MAGPIES 1 HORSHAM 0

Harleston Magpies finally returned to the form they had shown in the first half of the season when they took on third placed Horsham. Whilst Magpies have struggled in their last two League games Horsham have been in good form since the Christmas break so Magpies knew they needed to raise their game. Frances Sumner returned to the team in midfield and Lucy Hayman in goal adding more experience to the team.

Even in the opening ten minutes Magpies showed more sparkle than they had shown in the previous week and this set a good tempo for the rest of the match. The forwards were aggressive in closing down defenders and the midfield were dominant for large spells of the match, whilst the defence gave Horsham few chances. The first half saw Magpies take the game to Horsham with some neat build up play in midfield where Ellie Bale at right midfield was the pick of a number of impressive performances in midfield. The Horsham defence were under plenty of pressure in the first half as they tried to clear their lines. During this spell Magpies won several penalty corners with strikes from Frances Sumner and Emily Wilford being cleared by the Horsham defence. Horsham had their first chance from a penalty corner on the stroke of half time but the danger was cleared.

Having dominated the first half Magpies knew they had to maintain the same tempo in the second half and Cherry Seaborn's pace was certainly unsettling the Horsham team. Finally the breakthrough came after 62 minutes with a pass from Debbie McAllen finding Verity Blyth in the circle who set up Cherry Seaborn to score. This was nothing less than Magpies deserved but this left Magpies to play out a nervy final eight minutes as Horsham tried to respond and a little more composure on the ball in the final minutes would have helped the nerves.

This result sees Magpies move back into third place ahead of Horsham on goal difference. Next week Magpies are way to St Albans and they will need to take this form into the rest of the season.

Magpies Ladies IV 10 - 0 Pelicans III

Magpies welcomed Pelicans for a lunchtime push back at Weybread; another rearranged fixture due to the bad weather at the beginning of the year. And after their victory last week, the home side were looking to continue their push up the league table.
Pelicans arrived without a goalkeeper, the downside for Magpies being that Pelicans then played with 11 outfield players. Magpies knew it wouldn't be easy, and that they certainly couldn't afford to be complacent so they came out of the blocks hard and fast. During the first ten minutes the play was all Magpies, attacking the Pelicans defensive third, and centre forward Kay Dennis soon put the home side in front with a push shot from the top of the D. And it wasn't long before Magpies really started to assert their authority; Kay Dennis grabbing her second goal, before completing her hatrick inside 20 minutes. Magpies, supported by strong midfield play, enjoyed the majority of possession for the rest of the first half, and Rhiann Earrye made it four for the home side shortly before the break.
The second half saw much of the same; Rhiann Earrye scored twice more to get her hatrick; Kay Dennis got her fourth goal before Beth Alexander, brilliantly positioned by the back post to tap in, added her name to the scoresheet; and Bella Hall made it nine for Magpies, a brilliant short corner strike. Credit must be given to Pelicans who continued to battle hard but couldn't find a way through the Magpies defence. Kay Dennis got her fifth goal shortly before the end, putting Magpies into double figures.
An awesome performance from Magpies, the passing and movement throughout the team was excellent, and special mention must go to Keira Booty for her contribution on the left wing. Liz Cole, Treacle Snelling, Georgina Scott, and Claire Snelling in the Magpies defence were excellent for the entire 70 minutes, playing the ball around with pace and accuracy, and supporting the attacking play confidently. Well done to all 12 players - fantastic!

Kay Dennis, Magpies Ladies 4th's.

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM WEEKEND PREVIEW

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kitchen Sense play Horsham at home this Saturday starting at 12.30 in their English Hockey League game. Horsham have made a great start to the second half of the season winning their two opening games against Chelmsford and St Albans and moving up to third place in the League.

In contrast Magpies have drawn at home to Cambridge City and last week lost away to Northampton Saints, who are bottom of the League giving them their first home win of the season. This makes it a very tough match for Magpies as they try to find the form that gave them such an impressive first half of the season. Magpies will have to battle their way back to form knowing that Horsham certainly play a very hard game and Magpies will need to match them every inch of the way.

In the previous encounter earlier in the season the match finished 1-1 with Horsham equalising late on, although the result was probably a fair reflection of the game.

Magpies welcome back two experienced players who were missing last week ,namely Lucy Hayman in goal and Frances Sumner in midfield. Calianne Clark who stood in for Lucy Hayman for the last two weeks did well and it will give her invaluable experience.

SQUAD: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Lucy Hayman, Lucy Fields, Katrina Warnes, Bryony Lund, Charlotte Harrison, Ellie Bale, Debbie McAllen, Frances Sumner, Gemma Jones, Emily Wilford, Cherry Seaborn, Verity Blyth and Angie Wheelhouse
Bury St Edmunds Vets 2 Harleston Magpie Vets 2.

A strange situation confronted captain Bardwell before the start in that there were 12 Magpies ready to play rather more than usual for an away game but normal service was resumed as two pulled up lame and only ten finished the game.

Without doubt this was a below par performance. After all the cancellations recently perhaps we are not used to having only 7 days recovery time between matches. Whatever it was the team resembled a house that is full of all the available mod cons but the batteries have gone flat in every remote control unit.

Despite an advantage in possession Magpies could not create a clear cut chance in the first half and the break was reached with the game scoreless. The pattern continued early in the second half but then Bury scored from a breakaway. As has happened previously, a setback spurred Magpies on. Peter Dolton scored from what for him was a long shot – approx 10 yards and then within a minute Martin Reader scored with a reverse shot that was quite out of place compared with the mediocrity that had gone before.

In the next ten minutes there must have been five clear chances that went begging and then Bury scored from another breakaway. Nothing went right in the final few minutes so two expected points were dropped.
Magpies Widen the Gap

Magpies widened the gap between themselves and bottom of the table Chelmsford with a fine home win at the weekend. After an early setback when the visitors scored from a corner Magpies dug in and gradually wore Chelmsford down, building up a 3-1 lead before conceding a goal in the closing minutes. This was a good team performance with the whole squad playing a part. Whilst the experienced players provided stability during difficult periods it was the young players who took the eye. Craig Snelling deputised for Stuart Leate during a period of injury, up front Simon Hipwell, Ben Wright and Duncan Graves worked well showing some fine touches. Man of the match Gareth Furlong defended well and put on a fine display going forwards.

This weekend Magpies visit Bromley and Beckenham who lost to Indian Gymnkhana on Sunday . The Kent side need the points to stop them getting dragged into a relegation fight . A win for Magpies would open up an eight point gap from Bromley who could slip into a play off position. Mark Wheelhouse returns to the squad at the exclusion of Snelling, Neil Toulson is unavailable and Richard Ling takes his place.

Squad: From Richard Harms;John Livings;Gareth Furlong;David Ling;Leigh Sitch;Stuart Leate;Richard Gill;Pete Bale;Andy Hipwell;Tristan Baynes;Duncan Graves;James Fanger;Simon Hipwell,Ben Wright; Richard Ling;Mark Wheelhouse.

MORE WOE AND WORK FOR IRENE AND MERNA

Another seven league fixtures need to be rescheduled by our long suffering fixture secretaries, Irene Bicker and Merna Merrett, following last Saturday's frost and snow in Weybread's microclimate. In contrast all of our away matches were played including that of the Men's Veterans who hit the road for the first time since November 14 – when drawing 2-2 at distant Bury St Edmunds! One match survived at Weybread with the Ladies' 4ths beating Reepham 3-1 on the sand and it was also 'well done' to the Men's 4ths who beat Lowestoft away by an identical score.

With three games completely lost on Sunday at Weybread (when the weather could not be blamed), including the U18 Girls EH Cup clash with Old Loughtonians, due to the latter's 9.00am concession, it was left to the Men's 1sts to provide the highlight of the weekend with their much needed 3-2 win over Chelmsford. The team did well to hit back after going behind to an early penalty corner strike when Andy Hipwell scored from close range after good work by Tristan Baynes and Richard Gill put us ahead early in the second half when he anticipated an opportunity coming from a superb piece of close control from Simon Hipwell. Andy added a third when he squeezed the ball past the goalkeeper from a narrow angle following a run begun from well outside the circle. What a goal! At times the game resembled musical chairs with a succession of players being sent to the sin bin – with one returning within seconds of getting back on the pitch! - but it all ended well for Magpies, for whom Gareth Furlong was in fine form, despite another successful penalty corner strike by Chelmsford very late in the game which did nothing to calm nerves on the touchline!

Congratulations also to the U16 Girls who beat Chelmsford 4-0 away to progress to the quarter-finals of the EH Plate where they have an away game with Havering on Sunday 7 March.

There are several big matches this Saturday with perhaps the biggest being at the top of East League 3NE where at Hobart School in Loddon (3.00) the Men's 3rds, as league leaders, play Norwich Dragons who are three points behind with a game in hand and with a superior goal difference. With both teams well ahead of third placed Pelicans 2nds and having dropped just two points each all season (when they drew 2-2 at Weybread in early November) this match will almost certainly decide the winners of the championship. Good luck to Mark Lewis and his team - who last Sunday were given a 3-0 walkover by Dereham 3rds. Meantime the Men's 2nds (in fourth place) travel to London to play unbeaten leaders Wapping (2.30) needing a win to retain a realistic hope of promotion from Premier B while the Ladies' 1sts will be looking for a win to kick start the second half of their league campaign when they entertain Horsham (12.30). The teams drew 1-1 earlier in the season with Magpies winning the corresponding match 2-1 last season.

To round off the weekend there are two big games on Sunday with the Men's 1sts seeking to build on their win against Chelmsford (now 9 points behind Magpies) by beating Bromley and Beckenham away (1.30). Bromley and Beckenham are now four points behind Magpies following their 3-2 defeat by Indian Gym who remain five points behind Magpies. Meantime the Men's Veterans entertain Holcombe (12.00) in the fourth round of the EH Masters Cup.

Best wishes to all our teams in action this weekend including the U11 and U13 Girls and U13 Boys in the Norwich City Minis on Sunday.

WOMENS ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE – EAST CONFERENCE

NORTHAMPTON SAINTS 1 HARLESTON MAGPIES 0

This was not a good day for Harleston Magpies as they went down 1-0 away to Northampton Saints who prior to this game had not won a League game all season, although they had picked up a useful away draw the previous week. Adding to this the 1-1 draw the previous week Magpies have made a disappointing start to the second half of the season.

The first half was fairly even as both teams battled it out in a scrappy midfield game that lacked quality passing from either side. Bryony Lund moved into the middle alongside Debbie McAllen due to the absence of Frances Sumner because of illness. Charlotte Harrison also continued her come back with her second League game.

Northampton certainly had the appetite for this game and took the lead twenty minutes into the first half. It had an element of good fortune about it in that an unexpected deflection of the stick wrong footed the Magpies defence but given the opportunity they made good use of this situation to attack down the right and pull the ball back to score. At the other end Magpies responded with a couple of half chances which Northampton cleared comfortably.

Magpies played with more intensity in the second half and for a while Cherry Seaborn caused problems down the right with her speed. Northampton were forced back into their half for most of the remainder of the game and Magpies best chances came from penalty corners. Angie Wheelhouse had two shots saved as did Emily Wilford. Whilst Magpies had the territorial advantage Northampton were proving very hard to break down and in truth Magpies never really looked likely to create any real chances.

Next week Magpies play Horsham at home and they will need to raise their game if they want to return to the form they showed before Christmas.
Harleston 3 - Chelmsford 2

Harleston faced bottom of the table Chelmsford at home this weekend - the away team though buoyed by their first win the previous weekend. In their previous meeting Harleston ran out 6-0 winners but the rematch was going to be a tougher game as Chelmsford welcomed back a couple of players.

Chelmsford took a shock lead early on when they converted from a short corner with a powerful drag flick. Harleston rallied from this starting to create chances of their own, Baynes fired a ball across which Andy Hipwell touched but the Chelmsford keeper made a great save. As the game became more open tackles started to fly in from either team, green cards were brandished to calm the situation. With 16 minutes gone Harleston equalised following good movement down the right from Furlong and Fanger the ball was squared to Andy Hipwell who could not miss from a yard.

Harleston were now in the ascendancy and their course was helped when Chelmsford were reduced to 10 men for retaliation following a tackle by Toulson. Unfortunately Harleston despite having the majority of possession could not capitalise and both teams went in with a goal a piece at half time.

Following a stern talking to from the umpires both teams knew that any more reckless challenges would result in yellow cards for both teams. Despite the warning Harleston were soon reduced to 10 men when Bale was sent off for a challenge taking the card for team mate Ling. Despite going down to 10 Harleston continued to move the ball around the back well creating chances when appropriate.

Harleston managed to snatch the lead when Andy Hipwell found Gill unmarked in the D following the centre mids surging run to slot home from close range. Harleston were momentarily back up to 11 players until Bale was shown his second yellow of the game for tracking a player before the opposition had run five yards.

Again despite the numerical disadvantage Harleston continued to play some good hockey and found a third when Andy Hipwell bundled his way through the right hand side of the D to slot it past the Chelmsford keeper at his near post. Harleston were now in control of the game happy to keep possession and make Chelmsford work for the ball.

With 10 minutes to go Harleston again were reduced to 10 men when Baynes was shown a yellow following a free hit. Chelmsford pressed hard in this period throwing men forward at every opportunity to find a goal. Their prayers were answered with 3 minutes to go when they slotted another penalty corner away. Chelmsford were then reduced to 10 men for the same foul that Baynes committed. In the dying minutes Harleston had the chance to extend their lead when Furlong threw a mammoth cross pitch ariel but the forwards were unable to capitalise.

With the final whistle Harleston were relieved to have gained the vital 3 points, in what was not a vintage performance the younger members of the squad Wright, Furlong, Fanger and Graves stepped up to the plate all producing good performances. With the win under their belt the squad look forward to travelling to Bromely next weekend.

A super performance from Magpies girls sees them progress in the last 8 of the National Plate competition. The scoreline does not reflect what was an exciting and fairly even contest. The difference was in the quality of Magpies play in the Chelmsford D.

Sarah Brook was having to work very hard in midfield to stem Chelmsford attacks and provide ball for the forwards. Holly Baker had a good game linking up well with Kiera Booty.

The defence of Tania Pendreich, Michayla Toothil and Sophie Podd was very solid.

Magpies were 2-0 up at half time with Anna Lacey finishing off a cross from the right wing and Holly Baker scoring with a good shot from a pass from Sarah.

In the second half Magpies scored 2 excellent goals - both swept in on the back post by Kiera Booty. Girls in the team photo:Jess Howland , Rhian Earyre, Sohie Podd, Holly Baker, Anna Lacey and Michayla Toothil

Magpies Ladies IV 3 - 1 Reepham

A cold wintry day found Magpies facing Reepham in a rearranged fixture postponed earlier in the year due to bad weather.

Magpies were certainly up for this week's game, but even they couldn't have hoped for the start they got: Reepham had first push back, Magpies won the ball in the midfield, pushed it out to Rhiann Earrye on the right wing who ran it into the D, shot, and the ball found its way into the corner. A brilliant start for the home side who then continued to push hard at Reepham, enjoying the majority of possession but could not extend their lead. Towards the end of the half, Reepham got into the match more and started to pressurise the Magpies' defence, but the home side stayed strong at the back and took their lead into half time.
The second half saw the possession evenly matched as Magpies pushed for another goal and Reepham fought for the equaliser. It was Magpies, however, that took the initiative and midway through the half they won a well-deserved short corner; Bella Hall taking the strike from the top of the D and firing the ball into the goal. Reepham pulled a goal back shortly after, the ball slipping inside the near post, but Magpies were determined to get the win, and attacked the Reepham goal. Their efforts were rewarded when a superb cross from Laura Schultheiss on the right wing found Kay Dennis in the D to sweep home a first time shot to put the victory beyond doubt.
A fantastic performance from all 13 Magpies players; with special mention going to Rhiann Earrye on the forward line for her constant running and dangerous attacking play; Tracy Reeve, Hannah Booty and Bella Hall in the midfield for their commanding play; and Becky Ford, solid as ever at the back in her role as sweeper. Bring on next week!

Kay Dennis, Magpies Ladies 4th's.
Harleston Magpies Vets 2 Cambridge City Vets 0.

Should the football authorities consider instituting a mid season break then they might look to Harleston Vets for advice and opinions. Since the Vets last played Portsmouth have had three different owners, Jerry Blackmore's turkeys have gone from not having a care in the world to not having a world to care in and even Ipswich Town have won a game or two.

Captain Bardwell could either point to the fact that his team was unbeaten in the last eleven weeks or conversely had gone eleven weeks without scoring a goal. Inevitably due to the length of the break those early season questions arise like where did I leave my kit and ought I really to be playing hockey.

It needs to be said that some of the break was of our own making in that despite Simon's efforts we were unable to fulfil away fixtures (something that John Terry now wishes he could say) and this is not good for the club or the image we give to others.

Mr Denham in his meanderings mentioned that this was a fine display of hockey, though the only individual he mentioned was Roger Kent who had a cameo spectator role. Thanks must go to Roger for talking with the opposition in the clubhouse allowing the rest of us to watch the rugby. We do wish Roger a speedy recovery from his hand injury.

Anyway to the game, Magpies gained revenge for a narrow defeat in Cambridge by moving the ball quickly around and aggressive running resembling a Toyota awaiting its accelerator pedal modification. Angus Watkinson scored the first goal from an astute pass from Martin Reeder and John Wells the second. The margin would have been greater had a stroke not been missed-albeit only by fractions when a post was struck with the goalkeeper well beaten. If I said which post it was, those who know the Vets would be able to work out who took it but I won't as that would be unfair on David Blackmore.

A measure of Magpies performance was that only one short corner was conceded during the game and Murray was untroubled through the second half.

Such a fun time was had by all it makes you wonder why we don't do this more often.

Thanks as ever go to Graham Ramm resplendent in regal purple.
HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES 1ST TEAM WEEKEND PREVIEW

Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kitchen sense play Northampton Saints away on Saturday at 12.30 in their English Hockey East Conference League game. At the moment Northampton Saints are bottom of the League with just three points, but they are still battling away and last weekend drew 2-2 away with St Albans just to remind everyone that there are no easy League games and if you underestimate teams they have a nasty habit of surprising you.

Nothampton Saints were promoted to the National League this season and earlier in the season Magpies beat them at home 5-0 in one of those games where everything goes for you and you are 4-0 up at half time and Calianne Clark has saved a penalty flick for you. This time it will be very different as the other promoted team Cambridge City showed last weekend drawing 1-1 at Weybread.

Magpies need to get back to winning ways having finished the first half of the season with defeats to Ipswich and Southgate, whilst failing to beat Cambridge last week. Ipswich currently top the League with twenty six points, whilst Magpies in fourth place on twenty points are one and two points respectively behind third placed Chelmsford and second placed Sevenoaks.

It was disappointing not to beat Cambridge City last week having dominated the second half and created enough chances to win the game. Magpies need to repeat that second half performance for the whole match this Saturday and if they do they have every chance of kick starting the second half of the season with three points.

SQUAD: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Calianne Clark, Lucy Fields, Katrina Warnes, Bryony Lund, Charlotte Harrison, Ellie Bale, Debbie McAllen, Frances Sumner, Gemma Jones, Emily Wilford, Cherry Seaborn, Verity Blyth and Angie Wheelhouse
Magpies Return In Good Heart

Magpies returned home from their trip to Kent pointless but in good heart following a spirited performance. Holcombe containing six full internationals, were the better side for most periods of the game and certainly played a style of hockey suited to their home pitch surface. Holcombe ‘s play warranted their fourth position in the league table and on the day Magpies made too many errors at the back, and their finishing was not sharp enough.

Other results last weekend went according to form but the suprise of the day was a 3-2 victory which Chelmsford achieved against Indian Gymkhana. The Essex side who were soundly beaten by Magpies earlier in the season had only secured one point in the first half of the season. This result helps Magpies cause but makes this weekend’s game against Chelmsford at Weybread on Sunday push back 2.15 even more crucial. Magpies should be confident of securing the points to help consolidate their mid table position, but must not be complacent against a Chelmsford side who must have taken heart from their recent win.

Whilst Mark Wheelhouse is unavailable this weekend due to work commitments, vice captain David Ling makes a welcome return following suspension. Simon Hipwell, Craig Snelling and Ben Wright all took part in the Holcombe game with the latter two making their national league debuts. The experience will have given them confidence for future games.

Squad: From Richard Harms;John Livings;Gareth Furlong;David Ling;Leigh Sitch;Stuart Leate;Craig SnellingRichard Gill;Pete Bale;Andy Hipwell;Tristan Baynes;Duncan Graves;Neil Toulson;James Fanger;Simon Hipwell,Ben Wright; Richard Ling.
COUNTLESS HOURS

As many members, past and present, will know David Cobbald has spent countless hours at the club over many years working on the club's grounds and pitches. His job title has rarely been properly defined but I know David would not complain at being called groundman's assistant, i.e. assistant to his son Philip.

In this capacity DC has worked tirelessly for the club and we all owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for all he has done in this and numerous other capacities going back over 50 years.

All good things must, sadly, come to an end and DC has finally, after a few recent health concerns, listened to his wife, Judy, and family and has reluctantly decided to take life at an easier pace.

This has necessitated a fresh approach to the maintenance of the club's grounds and pitches with the establishment of a Ground Team under the co-ordination of Jeremy Podd. The various members will be responsible for specific tasks which include grass cutting and rolling, hedge cutting, strimming of banks, repair and replacement, when necessary, of the rabbit fencing, spraying of weeds, brushing of the artificial grass pitches, etc., etc. I am pleased to say that both David and Philip will continue to assist the club as members of the team. If you have comments to make regarding the grounds and pitches or would like to join the Ground Team please have a word with Jeremy (please see page 6 of the club's handbook for his contact details).

Results last weekend were a real mixed bag with the Men's 1sts and 2nds both losing; the Ladies' 1sts drawing 1-1 (congratulations to Emily Wilford on scoring her first national league goal) despite dominating Cambridge City for much of the game; the Men's 5ths pulling out of their match due to several late call-offs and eight of our teams winning. The Ladies' 2nds took another step away from relegation by beating Norwich City 2-1 with goals by Jesse Withers and Melissa Hunter; the Ladies 3rds beat Evergreens 3-1 with a hat trick by Keira Booty, who was recently promoted from the 5ths, and the 5ths won 6-0 against Evergreens 2nds with Jess Howland scoring four. Did Dad Paul ever score so many in a match? He tried to tell me on Sunday that it was a regular occurrence! All I can remember were his somersaulting goal scoring celebrations!

There was another win for the Ladies' Development (their tenth successive victory!); an eighth successive win for the Men's 3rds (with two more goals by guess who?) and a welcome three points for the Men's 4ths who beat Norwich Dragons 2-1. And the Men's Veterans got themselves into action for the first time since November 21 and gained a 2-0 win over Cambridge City. I missed the two goals so I was left watching a lot of huff and puff with no end product. I enjoyed using this phrase after the game hence a repeat here! But to be fair they played some delightful flowing hockey but missed the goal power of the injured Roger Kent who was in the 'crowd'. But the game I enjoyed most over the weekend was the 7-0 victory of the Mixed team on Sunday over Norwich City in the EH Trophy. Robbie Kinsella steadied any early nerves with a deft touch and thereafter more goals flowed from Bryony Lund, Verity Blyth (2), Daniel Legg, Lucy Fields (a cracking shot high into the net from distance) and Robbie again.

After their 4-1 defeat away to Holcombe the Men's 1sts will have been relieved to learn that bottom team Chelmsford (now six points behind Magpies) had beaten Indian Gymkhana (still five points behind) and to take full advantage of this result the team needs to beat Chelmsford at Weybread this coming Sunday (2.15) where in previously postponed fixtures the Men's 3rds entertain Dereham 3rds (12.30) while the Men's Vets take on table topping Ipswich (3.15). Also at home on Sunday will be the U18 Girls who play Old Loughtonians (11.45) for a place in the quarter finals of the EH Cup.

But before then we have twelve teams in Saturday action with the Ladies' 1sts travelling to play Northampton Saints (12.30) who they beat 5-1 earlier in the season. It was good to see Charlie Harrison easing herself back into the team last Saturday following the birth of her second child. Meantime the Men's 2nds have centre stage at Weybread when they entertain Letchworth (12.30) - to whom they lost 6-3 earlier in the season - with the Ladies' 2nds playing Ipswich 2nds (1.45) and the Men's 3rds taking on North Walsham (2.15). Please see the Home Page of the website for a full list of this weekend's matches. Good luck to all our teams.

With kind regards and best wishes

Ladies 5th had their second match of the year against Evergreens 2 at home. Having to work hard for a 4-2 win against Evergreens before Christmas we were expecting a tough game.

Magpies started well with the Fiona McKenzie and Alice Wilson taking charge of the midfield leaving little for the defence to do. Jess Howland came on after 15 minutes and had scored a hat trick by half time with Jemima Jacobs deflecting home the fourth.

The second half was much closer with Charlotte Nickson scoring her second goal in as many matches for the 5ths and Jess scoring a fourth. Katie Rudd in goal had her first kick of the year and towards the end Karen Ray made a good clearance off the line from a penalty corner. Ladies 5ths deservedly ran out 6 - 0 winners. Next week we play table toppers Norwich City.
WOMENS ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE – EAST CONFERENCE

HARLESTON MAGPIES 1 CAMBRIDGE CITY 1

Cambridge City started the better of the two teams as Magpies looked edgy when defending and when the home team did win the ball back their passing let them down allowing the opposition easy possession. Cambridge made the most of this spell winning two quick penalty corners. The first corner strike was well saved by Calianne Clark standing in for Lucy Hayman in goal, but when Magpies immediately conceded another for a foul outside the circle Louise Richardson gave Cambridge the lead on 16 minutes.

Magpies responded by winning two penalty corners. The first corner was cleared but by the time the second corner was awarded 16 years old Emily Wilford was on the pitch and her strike was deflected by the goalkeeper's stick high into the net. With the scores level at 1-1 this gave Magpies the boost they needed and gradually they were able to build up the midfield tempo and start to put some pressure on the Cambridge defence. Charlotte Harrison also came off the bench to make her first appearance of the season and bearing in mind this was her first match for 10 months did very well.

Magpies knew they would need to force the pace in the second half but were well aware from the earlier game in the season that Cambridge could defend well with plenty of players behind the ball. Magpies played well in the second half creating chances and were unfortunate not to take all three points missing a penalty flick whilst Emily Wilford was unfortunate to have a good goal disallowed. Unfortunately Magpies squandered several opportunities from penalty corners by not exercising the basics to a high enough standard.

As Magpies went for the win there was always the risk of being caught on the break and sure enough Cambridge created two good chances, one of which was well saved by Calianne Clark with a diving stick interception at the top of the circle and the other being scrambled away by the defence.

In the end Magpies had to settle for the draw but on a positive note their fitness stood up well considering this was their first League game since November and they created good chances especially in the second half. In addition Magpies had no less than five Under 18s in their team.

Magpies will be away to Northampton next week.
Holcombe 4 - Harleston Magpies 1

Harleston returned to outdoor action following a long lay off with indoor and the weather. The team made the long trip down to Kent to face mid table Holcombe. The team travelled in high spirits following a good friendly performance away to Southgate two weeks ago. The squad welcomed Ben Wright, John Livings and Craig Snelling for the journey.

Harleston started slowly struggling to adapt to a tricky pitch and the style of Holcombe's play. These problems meant that Harleston struggled to stay together as a unit, this in turn caused the team more problems as they struggled to string passes together from defence to midfield. The team eventually paid for their carless passing when Holcombe capitalised on a mistake to take the lead. Within 5 minutes Holcombe doubled their lead again when Harleston turned the ball over easily.

This came as a shock to Magpies, the team started to move the ball and created a couple of half chances of their own, on both occasions though Harleston were unable to capitalise. Harleston continued to struggle towards the end of the half and were thankful to Craig Snelling for clearing two efforts of their goal line.

Despite a poor first half performance the team were upbeat about turning events around in the second half. The team started strongly moving the ball better than in the first half and causing Holcombe problems. Again however the team lost possession and were made to pay by the home side extending their lead to three goals. It wasn't long before Holcombe increased their lead to 4 goals. It was at this point that Harleston started to play, pressing the opposition high and winning turn over ball of their own in the opposition half. Harleston managed to grab a goal with 10 minutes when Andy Hipwell fired home from close range. Harleston came close again with 5 minutes to play when Hipwell rattled the post following a short corner save from the Holcombe keeper.

Harleston need to pick themselves up from this performance as next Sunday they face bottom of the table Chelmsford who picked up a win this weekend. The team welcome back David Ling who is back from his ban following a match day misdemeanour.
Magpies travelled very early to Greshams to play an experienced Greshams side. Starting on a partly frozen pitch Magpies soon piled on the pressure but some determined defending from the home side saw a number of opportunities go to waste. Finally, just before half time a slick move from midfield and a great cross saw Keira Booty sweep the ball into the top of the goal to put Magpies 1 nil up.

In the second half Magpies made some great moves forward with Lizzie Jones showing her skill and potential and after some fluid attacking moves another cross saw Keira positioned in front to goal to score again. Magpies had to control some quick forward movements by Evergreens and one of these resulted in a melee in front of goal and they managed to score. Magpies struck back with another fine move forward to find Keira in front of goal again.

Another good team performance that saw the midfield working hard and the defence marking out the opposition forwards, whilst the Magpies forwards worked hard against a solid defence to create opportunities.

Magpies girls managed to gain another three points with a hard earned victory over a resilient Dereham side. After an even start Kira Wooltorton broke the deadlock firing home from a short corner midway through the first half giving Magpies a 1-0 lead at the interval.

The second half saw Dereham having more possession but excellent games in defence from Frankie Eaves and capt Molly Alexander enabled Magpies to keep their ninth clean sheet of the season. Magpies victory was finally sealed when first Catherine scored from close range followed by younger sister Kara Kilbourn deflecting in a strike from Lisa Dobson.

Magpies Ladies IV 1 - 2 Lowestoft Railway

Magpies faced a tough challenge playing top of the league Lowestoft, after only one other competitive match under their belts so far this season.
Magpies started well, however, taking the game to Lowestoft and putting them under some early pressure. Although, a quick break from the away side showed how dangerous they are on the counter attack, and why they are top of the league, and Magpies knew they would need to stay strong at the back. Which is exactly what they did; and with some commanding midfield play from Hannah Booty in the centre, and Bella Hall on the left, Magpies looked to be in the ascendancy. This was proved when centre forward Kay Dennis found herself in on goal, she was saved twice by the Lowestoft 'keeper before slotting the rebound into the corner to take the lead. A well deserved goal to take Magpies into half time.
The second half saw Lowestoft up their game, and ten minutes in, the away side won a short corner which led to their equaliser. Shortly after, another short corner and a straight strike from the top of the D gave Lowestoft the lead. Magpies fought hard to get back into the game but Lowestoft stayed strong and defended in numbers, and the home side couldn't find the back of the net again.
A much improved team performance from Magpies, who fought hard against the league leaders, which should stand them in good stead for next week's match against Reepham.

Magpies move outdoors again

The Men's 1sts return to outdoor league action this weekend with a visit to Holcombe. Earlier in the season Magpies secured a point in the game at Weybread. Holcombe find themselves in fourth position some six points above Magpies. Whilst Magpies will go all out for a win they will be pleased to return to Norfolk with a draw.

The mid season break came at the right time for Magpies. Richard Gill had missed three games through injury, but is now fit again, and the squad needed a break following a tough first half in a most competitive league. Whilst a number of clubs have not been involved in indoor many of Magpies' players have been playing in the top national indoor league. Ben Gowing, who had developed well during the season, is unavailable for the remainder of the campaign as he is working abroad. Andy Bedwell has returned following his travels but unfortunately he has sustained an injury which will keep him out for the remainder of the season. Meantime David Ling misses the Holcombe game through suspension following an incident in an indoor game. Magpies will be looking to young players developing from the second team to support the established players in their quest to consolidate their league position.

Squad from: Richard Harms, John Livings, Gareth Furlong, Mark Wheelhouse, Leigh Sitch, Stuart Leate, Craig Snelling, Richard Gill, Pete Bale, Andy Hipwell, Tristan Baynes, Duncan Graves, Neil Toulson, James Fanger, Simon Hipwell, Ben Wright, Richard Ling.

MERNA AND IRENE –THANK YOU

When Merna Merrett, the Men's Fixture Secretary, emailed me in the middle of last week anticipating bad weather for the weekend I thought she was being unduly pessimistic but as we all know by now her pessimism was totally justified with only the Men's 6ths fixture away at Sudbury surviving yet another wintry blast. Merna kindly took on the job at the beginning of last season since when she and Irene Bicker, the Ladies' Fixture Secretary, have had more postponements to deal with than for years. So I am sure I speak on behalf of all members when I thank Merna and Irene, and the various team captains, for all their hard work necessitated by the postponements and subsequent rearrangements.

The forecast for this weekend is far more promising and for the first time in ages we have eight matches scheduled at Weybread on Saturday. After their successful indoor exploits the Ladies' 1sts will need to adapt to what is generally recognised to be the main form of the game when they resume their national outdoor campaign by entertaining Cambridge City (12.30). The team will be mindful of their two defeats just before the mid-season break and City's improved form since Magpies won 2-0 at Cambridge early in October. Next up will be the Ladies' 2nds who play Norwich City (2.15) looking to improve on the good point they got away from home in the first half of the season following a 2-2 draw. Meantime the Men's 2nds are away to Cambridge Nomads and a repeat of their 7-2 win back in October would be most welcome as the team attempts to keep in touch with Cambridge City and Wapping near the top of their league.

On Sunday the Men's 1sts are also back in national league outdoor action for the first time since the end of November when they travel to Rochester in Kent to play Holcombe (1.30) seeking their first 3-point haul since beating Chelmsford on October 10th. When the teams met earlier in the season the result could have gone either way with Magpies settling for a 1-1 draw having defended two penalty corners from former England centre forward David Mathews in the dying seconds.

Meantime the club will be busy on Sunday hosting the Suffolk Junior Academy Centre after the Mixed team start their England Hockey Trophy campaign, under the captaincy of David Francis, by playing Norwich City at 12.15pm. Please see the Home Page of the website for a full list of this weekend's matches. Good luck to all our teams.

News and comments in brief
§ Congratulations to East Grinstead on retaining their national indoor title when they beat Surbiton last Sunday at the Trent FM Arena in Nottingham. While I have no argument with Chris Mayer's decision to make Ashley Jackson Sky TV's Man of the Final I thought he was pushed all the way by his teammate and former GB and England star Mark Pearn. I have been an admirer of Mark ever since I saw him make his international debut in the Champions Trophy in Berlin in 1995.

§ It is difficult to keep Ashley Jackson (surely England's most talented player for many years) out of the news and last week he gained another honour by being named the UK Hockey Player of 2009 following the annual poll conducted amongst the British members of the Hockey Writers' Club. Helen Richardson was winner of the women's award. Ashley's award came as no surprise as not long ago he was named the FIH's World Young Player of 2009!

Harleston Magpies Ladies 1st team return to English Hockey League action this Saturday at Weybread with a match against Cambridge City starting at 12.30. Magpies last League match was November 28th so this break from outdoor action has been a long time and the weather in the last few weeks has not helped in preparing the team for outdoor hockey. Both teams have been involved in Indoor League action during January and Magpies can look back on a satisfactory Indoor season finishing third in Division 1.

Cambridge City were promoted from the East League last season and found life difficult in the first few weeks as they struggled to pick up their first point. During this time Magpies beat them away

2-0 with the second goal coming in the final five minutes. Since that time they have shown steady improvement and three League wins has confirmed this as they have pushed up o 7th in the League.

Magpies will need to remember that this will be a very different team to the one they played last time.

The priority for Magpies will be to try and start the second half of the season with a home win despite the difficulties in preparing for this game and create some momentum. In their final eight League games Magpies will have five matches at home.

At the moment Magpies are in 4th position in the East Conference four points behind the leaders Ipswich. This situation could have been so much better if Magpies had not thrown away a one nil lead in their last League game at Southgate, conceding two goals in the final six minutes to give Southgate only their second win of the season.

Calianne Clark will be standing in for Lucy Hayman this week and we are also pleased to welcome back Charlotte Harrison for her first game of the season after the birth of her son Alex. Emily Wilford is also back in the squad.

SQUAD: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Calianne Clark, Lucy Fields, Katrina Warnes, Bryony Lund, Charlotte Harrison, Ellie Bale, Debbie McAllen, Frances Sumner, Gemma Jones, Emily Wilford, Cherry Seaborn, Verity Blyth and Angie Wheelhouse
