Magpies, after a three week break due to postponements, started slowly by their standards, with the first ten minutes' of play evenly contested, each team trying to gain some momentum.
Magpies found their rhythm first and took the early initiative, playing the ball up into their attacking third, winning several short corners and forcing the Old Buckenham 'keeper to make some quality saves. The breakthrough came when the ball found Kay Dennis on the edge of the D; she executed a sharp turn and fired the ball into the corner of the goal giving the home side the lead. Shortly afterwards Magpies doubled their advantage, left midfielder Zoe Cole well-positioned in the D to slot home; her first goal of the season and much deserved. Magpies continued to dominate the play but the score remained at two nil going into half time.
The second half saw Old Buckenham have more possession, but the Magpies defence stayed strong, Becky Ford in particular making some crucial interceptions and then making some good runs forward to support the attcking play. A lovely move from the forwards gave Magpies their third goal, Beth Alexander passing to Kay Dennis, who played it to Rachel Clifford who put the ball away. The home side started to tire towards the end, with Old Buckenham pushing forward, winning three consecutive short corners, and thus scoring a late consolation goal.
A brilliant result for Magpies after a considerable amount of time off the pitch, well done to all 11 players who worked tirelessly until the final whistle. Now onto next week!

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES WEEKEND PREVIEW
Harleston Magpies Ladies sponsored by Kitchensense are away this Saturday against Staines starting at 1.30. Magpies were disappointed to concede a late equaliser against Old Loughtonians at home last week but overall their performance was good and they need to take this form into the game on Saturday. At the moment Staines are in 9th position in the relegation play off position but they know three points on Saturday would lift them out of the danger zone. Their record suggests that they have no problem scoring goals having scored 26 but they have the worst defensive record in the League having conceded 41 goals.
This is a real opportunity for Magpies provided their defence does not lose concentration, because they should create scoring chances against this Staines team. In the League match earlier in the season Harleston just beat Staines 3-2 at home so they need to be aware that if Staines are given scoring opportunities they will cause problems on their own pitch.
Magpies are still without Charlotte Harrison who is injured but there is a chance she might be back the following week.
SQUAD : Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Lucy Hayman, Lucy Miller, Helen Brook, Bryony Lund, Debbie McAllen, Ellie Catchpole, Frances Sumner, Katrina Warnes, Anna Toulson, Artemis Clark, Cherry Seaborn and Angie Wheelhouse.
1-1 x 2
Both 1st teams managed to keep their supporters anxious and involved until the final whistles last Saturday with their contrasting 1-1 draws. The Ladies played well throughout against a gritty Old Loughtonians but again failed to find a vital second goal before Rebecca Halle, the league's leading scorer, deflected home the equaliser with eleven minutes to go. In contrast the Men took some time to get going against a very strong Cambridge University side after their enforced 3-week break and after spurning a good chance early in the game almost immediately fell behind following an uncharacteristic mistake in defence. The last minute equaliser came as an immense relief to the team and crowd following some sustained pressure.
This Saturday the Ladies are away to Staines (1.30) looking for the win to secure mid-table safety while the Men are away to Cambridge City (2.00) seeking three of the ten points needed from their last eight matches to secure the championship.
Last Sunday the Men's Veterans went out of England Hockey's Veterans Cup by three goals to one away to Ipswich but not until they had put up a tremendous fight in the sporting scene of the word. Missing four regulars and relying on the same eleven players throughout the match they went ahead when skipper Phil Cobbald banged the ball home after 13 minutes. However, it was Ipswich who had most of the play and the evergreen Andy Cook put them ahead with a couple of good goals early in the second half. Magpies were denied an equaliser with five minutes remaining by a goal line clearance and in the dying seconds Ipswich converted a penalty corner to complete the scoring. Outstanding for Magpies in a fine team effort were goalkeeper Murray Graham and midfielder Simon Bardwell. However, the umpires felt they could manage the last minute of the game without anymore of Simon's advice by which time, like many of his teammates, he was in need of a rest!
News and comments in brief
· Congratulations to Simon Bardwell and Paula on their marriage last week.
· My thanks to David and Phil Cobbald for all the maintenance work they have put in on the two pitches over the last few days.
· Please have a look, via the link on the top right of the Home Page of the website, of the video interviews of Leigh Sitch and Colin Wheelhouse carried out last Saturday by Nick Wells, the Sports Editor of the Diss Express.
· The best goal I saw last weekend was Guy Paul's fine effort when he went round the goalkeeper to give the 4ths a hard fought win over Bury St Edmunds 2nds.
· We have several teams in form at the moment including the Ladies' 3rds under the captaincy of Jose Tibbenham. With 7-1 and 7-3 wins in their last two games they are now challenging for promotion.
· Other teams in form are the Men's 2nds, as demonstrated by their 10-0 demolition of St Ives, the Men's 5ths who secured their sixth successive win by beating Bury St Edmunds 4ths 11-0 and the Ladies Development with their 15th successive win (this time 3-0 over North Walsham) to maintain their 100% record.
· Congratulations to our U11 and U13 Boys and Girls Mini teams which did so well again last Sunday – this time at Pelicans. The U11 Boys and U13 Girls came 1st, the U11 Girls came 2nd and the U13 Boys finished 3rd. This Sunday the Boys' teams will be competing in the Norfolk Championships at Gresham's School.
· On the injury front it is bad news that Andy Bedwell will be out for the rest of the season but encouraging news that Charlie Harrison is making good progress following her hand injury.
· It was good to hear from David Blackmore last weekend wishing the Vets well at Ipswich. David will be back in a few months after he has tired of the ski slopes of France!
· I can report that the electronic scoreboard was suffering from amnesia! I hope all will be well this weekend now it has been reminded of the signal it should receive from the remote control.
· After their bye against Broxbourne the Mixed team are away to Long Sutton (11.30) this Sunday in the EH Trophy.
· It would be much appreciated if you would kindly return your Spring Prize Draw books (with money!) as soon as possible please.
· I think I may have mentioned (!) the Wine Tasting Evening to be held in the clubhouse at 7.30pm on Saturday 7 March. Please come along.
Best wishes to supporters and friends of HMHC and to all our teams playing this weekend.

Harleston men, sponsored by Hutton and Legg, returned to league action this weekend after a 2 week absence. Even with the lack of game play the squad had trained hard, determined to carry on their winning ways.
Despite their best preparations the team struggled to find their feet in the early stages as the Uni side pressed hard forcing Harleston into uncharacteristic errors. The game became more open as both sides pushed to find the opener; Neil Toulson snuck in at the back post but was unable to convert a ball from Hipwell. Harleston had shut the door on many Uni attacks but it was an unforced error from Sitch which cost them the goal when he was caught in possession allowing the Uni side to slot the ball home. Finding them selves a goal down for only the second time this season the team fought back hard in the first half but still could not find their usual flowing hockey.
At half time the team looked on the positives that despite not playing their best hockey and the University side throwing everything they had at them they still only found themselves a goal down and still in the game. Again the second half started at a frightening pace with chances being created at both ends, despite a barrage of short corners Harleston were unable to find the equaliser. While down the other end the team had Richard Gill to thank clearing two short corners off the line.
The momentum of the game had changed and as Harleston pushed for the vital equaliser they left them selves exposed at the back, the team having Richard Harms to thank when the keeper was rapid off his line to eliminate an attacker at the top of the D. Shortly after this escape the team found themselves a player down when Stuart Leate took one for the team when he was given his marching orders for a professional foul.
With 5 minutes to go Andy Hipwell fired in a trademark short corner to give Harleston the goal they desperately craved. With little time left Uni pushed hard but the back four of Leate, Sumner, Ling and Sitch fought hard to keep the door well and truly shut.
Although not a trade mark performance by Harleston, a battling encounter showed the spirit of the team and took them one point closer to the National League. With results going their way the team moved a point further clear from the chasing pack as Havering and Albans both dropped points.
Magpies started with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Dereham despite dominating territory and possesion. However, it was important not to lose our opening match.
Magpies then got 3 points from a 1-0 victory aganist Pelicans. The girls had lots of attempts on goal and evetually Emily McCluskey scrambled the ball into the net.
Magpies were now playing with confidence and quickly picked up another 3 points from a convincing 2-0 win v Watton. Sophie Long scored with a super hit and Kara Kilborn got a deserved 2nd after lots of efforts on goal.
Winners and runners up medals were then up for grabs when Magpies played Norwich City (who had won the other 2 under 11 tournaments this season). This proved to be a really competitive and exciting match. Ana Berry (who had so far kept 3 clean sheets in the tournament) made several good saves and Holly Hunter had 2 good chances at the other end.
Norwich took the lead from a short corner. Ana made a good block from the initial shot but Norwich reacted quicker to the rebound. Magpies did not give up and put Norwich under pressure in the closing minutes. Kara Kilbourn scored a superb individual goal (beating 2 defenders and the keeper) with the last touch of the game.
Magpies then beat Norwich B (another goal by Sophie Long) to finish with 12 points. The draw against Dereham in the first match in the end cost Magpies 1st place in the tournament. They can be really pleased with the progress they are making at the moment. Aswell as our goalscorers the defenders Betrice Flatt, Katie Crawford and Krystal Jenkins plus goalkeeper Ana Berry had an excellent tournament.

Holly Baker scoring from a short corner v Norwich City
First up was Dereham where they found the opposition keeper in fine form and despite many good chances it looked likely that Dereham would hold out for a draw. However, with the less than a minute remaining Archie scored with a well struck shot that took a deflection past the keeper to give Magpies a 1-0 win. Next up were the hosts and Magpies had to dig deep against strong and skilful opposition. The winning goal came from Kieran who followed up his first shot to score from the rebound to make it 1-0. Magpies defence then held firm with good work from Jordan in goal to clear the ball and a number of good tackles from Will & Jack Heywood. Magpies then beat Watton 3-0 with 2 goals from Tristan and a fine short-corner goal from Jack Free-Smith. This was probably Magpies best performance of the day with strong contributions from George in defence and William in midfield. The final game was against Norwich City and Magpies looked comfortable as they took a 2-0 lead but City fought back well and Sam Tomlinson scored a great goal to make it 2-1. However, Magpies managed to hold out for the final two minutes to make it four wins out of four. Another good all-round performance and Magpies can now look forward to the county tournament at Gresham’s next weekend.

Magpies decided to change the usual fast free flowing game for one of containment and relying on the two front players Stu Baker and Roger Kent to use their pace to catch Ipswich on the break.
In the first few minutes Magpies were forced to defend deeper than they had hoped namely a few yards out from goal and at times closer than that and a total of three shots were taken off the line by defenders.
Despite being frequent pressure, Magpies were able to frustrate the Ipswich attacks and did manage the occasional visit into Ipswich territory. After twenty minutes, a slack pass by an Ipswich defender was intercepted by Phil Cobbald who took the ball into the circle and beat the keeper with ease for an unexpected lead.
With the home crowd now much quieter than previous, Magpies tactics continued to frustrate Ipswich who became more frantic towards half time but to no effect with star man Cook getting more and more fed up with the close marking of Simon Bardwell
Magpies knew that the second half would be harder as there were no substitutes to call on and finally after ten minutes, Ipswich ended up with a free man on the right whose cross was expertly deflected into the goal by Andy Cook- who had chosen to play for Vets rather than Ipswich ones in national league.
More pressure was heaped on the Magpies defence and Murray Graham made a series of outstanding saves but was given no chance when Cook scored goal number two with fifteen minutes to go.
Out of necessity Magpies had to go forward in search of an equaliser and in the last five minutes forced three short corners. Jon Aldridge controlled a rebound off the goalkeeper and flicked the ball goalwards only to see it taken off the line by a defender.
As they pushed forward Magpies left spaces at the back that Ipswich exploited and from a short corner- very harshly given- they increased their lead in the very last minute.
Despite the result, Magpies can take great pride in the way they contested all through the game.
U13 BOYS AT PELICANS TOURNAMENT
Harleston Magpies U13 Boys finished 3rd at the Pelicans Tournament. With the return of Sonny Molloy, Mitchell Tompkins and Elliot Ashurst to the team from the previous weekend at Watton this looked more like the regular team.
A 1-1 draw (James Bensly) in the opening game was a promising start as Dereham have won most Tournaments this season. Unfortunately losing 0-1 to Pelicans in the next game and drawing 3-3 with Watton (Elliot Ashurst, Thomas Ridley and Mitchell Tompkins) was disappointing. Norwich City B team were beaten 7-0 (Thomas Ridley 3, Elliot Ashurst 4) and Dereham B 4-1 (Thomas Ridley, Mitchell Tompkins 2 and Elliot Ashurst).
In the final game against Norwich City it was an end to end game and Mitchell Tompkins seemed certain to score as he rounded the goalkeeper onaly for a diving stick save from the GK to deny him a certain goal. Norwich went straight down the other end to take a 1-0 lead. Magpies battled back strongly to equalise through Mitchell Tompkins.
Team: Thomas Ridley, Harry Murton, James Bensly, Rory Aldridge, Elliot Ashurst, Barnaby Carless, Sonny Molloy and Mitchell Tompkins.
U13 GIRLS WIN AT PELICANS TOURNAMENT
Harleston Magpies U13 Girls finished first winning all their matches and following up the performance from the previous week when they won at Watton. This week Saffron Wilford and Rosie Chubbock replaced Georgia Pearson and Jemima Jacobs.
Magpies beat Dereham A 3-0 in their opening game as Lizzie Jones scored two goals and Sarah Brook a third. Pelicans A were beaten 3-0 (Saffron Wilford, Holly Baker and Sarah Brook) followed by Pelicans B 4-0 (Holly Baker 2, Sarah Brook and Lizzie Jones).
Watton defended well in the next match and Magpies managed a late winner from Lizzie Jones whose shot from the top of the circle beat the goalkeeper. Norwich City who finished second in the Tournament gave Magpies a testing game, but fortunately Holly Baker scored early with a cracking shot from a penalty corner strike. Holly scored a second with a reverse stick touch from Sarah Brook's through ball. In between Norwich gave the Magpies defence a few scares. In the final game Magpies beat Dereham B 4-0 (Rosie Chubbock, Holly Baker and Saffron Wilford 2.)
The U13 Girls next Tournament will be in the Norfolk Championsip on March 22nd at Harleston.

WOMENS SLAZENGER ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE EAST CONFERENCE
HARLESTON MAGPIES 1 OLD LOUGHTONIANS 1
Harleston Magpies started the match by far the sharper of the two sides and went on to dominate the first half, which was played predominantly in the visitors half. From the beginning Cherry Seaborn and Artemis Clark supported by Ellie Catchpole found plenty of opportunities to exploit the space and vunerabiliy on the left side of Old Loughtonians defence. Despite the good approach work Magpies best chances came from penalty corners. Frances Sumner had the ball in the net from a penalty corner strike but unfortunately the shot was above the backboard. Magpies came close with another few chances but Frances Sumner was not to be denied and after 25 minutes she scored from a penalty corner to make it 1-0. At this point the Magpies defence had been very solid and hardly troubled but the feeling at half time was that 1-0 would not be enough.
Old Loughtonians started the second half well and created quite a few problems. Magpies conceded three successive penalty corners which goalkeeper Lucy Hayman dealt with, but Old Loughtonians were unsettling the home side. Gradually Magpies came through this spell as they went looking for the decisive second goal and were unlucky to be denied a strong claim for a penalty flick.
With eleven minutes to go the visitors won a free hit outside the Magpies defending circle and Becky Halle scored for Old Loughtonians with a sharp deflection.
Magpies still had time to find a winner but they never enjoyed the same pressure they had in the first half. Whilst it was frustrating to concede a late equaliser Magpies had played well throughout most of the match but had never scored the second killer goal. Next week Magpies play Staines away.

Magpies first visit to the St Ives half saw Martin Fields finish off a fine move involving Jamie Legg and Dave Francis a second goal quickly followed from a Robbie Kinsella strike at a short corner. Fields then went on to complete his hat-trick with two goals both from open play. Not to be out done Will Harrison despatched a short corner into the roof of the net with just 12 minutes played.
Harrison went on to complete his hat-trick with two further goals from short corners and James Stacey added a further goal. With Laurence Baynes controlling the midfield, well supported by Si Hipwell and Robbie Kinsella and Craig Snelling and Dan Legg regularly finding their forward players with accurate passing, well backed up by excellent work down the right from Sam Moore and Ben Wright. Magpies totally destroyed the opposition and went into half leading 8-0.
Second half was a bit of an anti-climax with St Ives Battling to regain pride as Magpies struggled to get to the heights of their first half performance. Eventually Magpies increased their lead when Duncan Steven finished off an excellent passing move. Magpies 10th quickly followed when Dave Francis beat the beat the keeper at the third attempt. The closest St Ives came in the second half was a well struck shot from the edge of the area, which Livings kept out confidently.
A superb team performance in which Martin, Lawrence and Will shone with Harrison taking Man of the match. Next up for Magpies is the visit of Wapping to Weybread. Where Magpies aim to maintain their unbeaten record at home and increase the screws on Letchworth at the top of the table.
Within the first 20 minutes magpies found themselves 2-0 down after goals from top of the table Loddon. Emily Wilford pulled a goal back with a precision corner strike inches inside the right had post. This was followed by an equaliser from Jazz Bartlett with a reverse stick shot leaving the teams all square at half time. Loddon once again took the lead in the second half when Elizabeth Skinner scored her second. Magpies upped their game with the pace of Wilford and Bartlett causing problems.
Wilford got her second corner strike this time to the left post and magpies went from strength to strength. Jose Tibbenham's long corner found Julie Podd unmarked at the top of the D who made no mistake with a powerful strike to give magpies the lead for the first time. Loddon had more chances but good interpassing between Bartlett and Wilford saw Wilford get her hat-trick. Loddon allowed their heads to drop and the game was put beyond doubt when Lucy Chubbock spotted an opening and sent a free hit into the D which was swept into the goal by Tibbenham. Wilford wrapped up a fine individual and team performance with a neat dummy at a short corner allowing the defence to run past her and then slotting the ball home.
Magpies ladies 3rds have only played on alternate weeks since the christmas break due to weather breaks and the indoor. However against a Reepham side who are struggling in the premier division the girls took advantage to show they can score with ease. With captain Tibbenham unable to play she gave Emily Wilford a rare opportunity to play with Emily having no school commitments. Emily got her name on the scoresheet four times, with Jazz Bartlett netting two and Lucy Chubbock following up a short corner in the free scoring match.
The second half followed a similar pattern before goals from Fiona Mckenzie and Rosie Chubbock secured the points for Magpies. Resilient defending from Sophie Podd, Molly Alexander and Sarah Legg ably supported by some fine goalkeeping from Katie Rudd enabled Magpies to keep their impressive run going.
I couldn't believe it!
When I got to the club last Saturday I could hardly believe that yet another game for the Men's 1sts had fallen victim to the cold weather. This time Ipswich HC's
Apart from the above disappointment last Saturday turned out to be a most successful one for the club at Weybread as we were able to enjoy wins (with plenty of goals) for Ladies' 1sts (1-0), Ladies' 2nds (3-1), Ladies' 3rds (7-1), Men's 2nds (6-1), Men's 3rds (7-1) and Men's 6ths (1-0) to go with away wins for Men's 5ths (1-0) and Men's Veterans (5-1).
After the opening few minutes the Ladies' 1sts completely dominated their match against Sevenoaks and it was a mighty relief to see Angie Wheelhouse bang in her 10th goal of the season. I have to confess I saw little of the excellent win by the Ladies' 3rds (sorry ladies!) as I was anxiously willing the 1sts to victory after failing to get the electronic scoreboard to work. But stuck on 0-0 it was accurate for 63 minutes!
The Men' 2nds played extremely well in the second half against the ten men of Cambridge City 2nds while the Ladies' 2nds, apart from a misunderstanding in defence which allowed Norwich Dragons to draw level for a few minutes, played some of their best hockey of the season. Next up were the Men's 3rds and their first and seventh goals were scored by Will Main and Phil Cobbald. The latter was making a rare appearance for the team (having managed the 2nds to victory) and his shot rifled into the net from a narrow angle. But the star of the show was once again Matt Brand who continued his goal filled season with another five. It is just as well for the club that the transfer window has been closed for a few months!
This Saturday the Ladies' 1sts play Old Loughtonians (12.30) looking for another home win after their away defeat by table topping Reading last Sunday. Meanwhile the Men's 2nds travel to St Ives (2.00), the Men's 3rds are away to the UEA (1.00) and the Men's 5ths entertain Bury St Edmunds 4ths (4.00) with all three teams seeking to maintain their respective promotion bids.
News and comments in brief
· Congratulations to our U11 and U13 Boys and Girls Mini teams which did so well last Sunday at Watton and especially to the U11 Boys and U13 Girls who came first. All four teams will be in action again this Sunday at Pelicans.
· Roger Kent hit a hat trick last Saturday for the Vets and a repeat this Sunday (1.30) would be most welcome when he turns out for the Vets in their EH Cup clash at Ipswich (Henley Rd).
· It would be much appreciated if you would kindly return your Spring Prize Draw books (with money!) as soon as possible please.
Important date for your diary please; Saturday 7 March – Wine Tasting Evening. You are cordially invited to this free event being held in the clubhouse at

HARLESTON MAGPIES LADIES WEEKEND PREVIEW
After a double header of League games last weekend which resulted in a crucial home win on Saturday against Sevenoaks followed by a disappointing defeat away against League leaders Reading on the Sunday, Magpies Ladies are at home against Old Loughtonians on Saturday starting at 12.30. The target after the Christmas break has been to try and take maximum points from the home games and so far this has been achieved with two home wins against teams below us in the League. This weekend will see a far more testing encounter as Old Loughtonians are above us in the League. In the earlier fixture away against Old Loughtonians Magpies lost 2-1 but we felt that we should have had at least a draw as we dominated the second half but lacked the finishing touch from open play and numerous penalty corners . We effectively let them off the hook.
Apart from the Reading game on Sunday the defence has looked much tighter since Christmas and fortunately Old Loughtonians do not possess the same quality as Reading. If the defence can continue the form of the last two home games the onus will be on the forwards to maximise their opportunities.
SQUAD FROM: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Lucy Hayman, Lucy Miller, Helen Brook, Bryony Lund, Debbie McAllen, Ellie Catchpole, Amy Tuffs, Frances Sumner, Katrina Warnes, Anna Toulson, Artemis Clark, Cherry Seaborn and Angie Wheelhouse.
Magpies draw another blank
Harleston Magpies sponsored by Hunton Legg lost another game to the weather at the weekend when their game against Ipswich was postponed due to a frozen strip of pitch adjacent to a building.Whilst the squad have been able to train regularly there is no substitute for match practice and Magpies will hope they can quickly get back to playing ways when they take on Cambridge University at the weekend. The students with one eye on the forthcoming varsity match will have been training hard and had a convincing victory against City of Peterborough last weekend. However Peterborough are on a downward spiral and not too much should be read into this result.
Andy Bedwell’s visit to the hospital has resulted in a projection of no further games this season, however the remainder of the squad have reported fit and available for this weekend. The second team won well again and continue in second position with players in good form pushing for first team chances.
Magpies nearest rivals Havering should win away to Bishops Stortford and St Albans are confident of picking up points against Bedford.
Magpies U13 Boys were depleted due to absences for half term but put up a creditable performance with several U11 Boys making their debut for the U13s. They lost their first game 0-2 to a useful Dereham side when Magpies were at their most vunerable as they tried to organise a new team. After that the Boys battled well drawing 1-1 with Watton (Thomas Ridley), 1-1 with Pelicans (James Bensly) and 1-1 with Norwich City (Sol Barker).
The U13 Boys finished 3rd.

Their second match was very disappointing in terms of defending. Norwich City and Magpies were quite well matched but Magpies missed some simple tackles to allow Norwich to score some very soft goals. Sophie Long scored for Magpies but Norwich won 4-1.
Some harsh words were spoken about effort and marking and Magpies played much better in their next match to win 2-0.
Magpies then played their best hockey of the tournament against Watton. However, a superb goal from Sophie Long was ruled out and the Watton keeper made a series of good saves.
The draw still left Magpies in 2nd place going into their last match v Dereham. This was another good performance but Magpies again had to settle for a draw as pressure could not be turned into goals.
The runners up medals were the first for this group of girls. Hopefully they can push on from here to achieve sucess in future tournaments. They are in action again this Sunday at Pelicans.
Magpies won a tight encounter against Pelicans who started strongly and looked the most likely to win. However, Magpies slowly got to grips with their opponents and created a couple of chances before Kieran scored the winning goal. In the second match they faced the hosts who had a couple of good forwards but Jack Heydon and Will Hall defended extremely well. The forwards of Tristan and Kieran caused plenty of problems with Kieran setting up Tristan for the first and then poaching the second to make it 2-0.
Magpies won a tight game 2-1 against a Norwich side who improved throughout the tournament. Jonty scored the first and Tristan the second to go 2-0 up only to then have a lapse of concentration. Jordan found himself 4 against one and despite making the first save could not prevent the Norwich forward scoring from the rebound. However, Magpies held firm to go into the last game with a 100% record. Magpies then turned on the style recording a 7-0 win against Dereham. Alex scored the best goal of the day rounding of a great team move with the other goals coming from Jack Free-Smith (3), Tristan (2) and Kieran. This was a good team performance with skipper Jack Free-Smith leading by example at centre midfield.

The boys have now won all 4 tournaments so far this season. They are in action again this Sunday at Pelicans.
Magpies 2s maintained their push for promotion with a convincing 6-1 victory over Cambridge City. Magpies welcomed back rock Dan Legg, playing his first came of this year.
Magpies dominated the first half but struggled to break down a resolute Cambridge defence, the visiting keeper made several decent saves before a well worked short corner routine between Will Harrison and Robbie Kinsella saw Harrison score. Dispite more pressure Magpies were unable to increase their lead before half time.
The second half followed a similar pattern with one difference, GOALS!!! Kinsella scored with a ferocious shot from a close angle. The third goal quickly followed which was an excellent link up play between Hipwell, Stacey and Jamie Legg applied the finishing touch.
Kinsella scored the 4th from a short corner before Cambridge pulled a goal back, Magpies responded immediately with Duncan Stevens being set free and beat the advancing from the top of the area. They completed the scoring when James Stacey got a deserved when he deflected a long ball into the back of the net.
Another excellent team performance with some good quality passing and movement which eventually got the reward it deserved. Man of the match was Robbie Kinsella. Next up is an away trip to St Ives where Magpies look to carry on this rich vein of form.
WOMENS SLAZENGER ENGLAND HOCKEY LEAGUE EAST CONFERENCE
HARLESTON MAGPIES 1 SEVENOAKS 0
With Harleston and Sevenoaks placed 5th and 6th in the League respectively this was always likely to be a tight game between two teams with similar records. Sevenoaks had the better of the opening ten minutes as Magpies made a hesitant start but the home side gradually started to assert some authority on the game with some excellent link play down the right hand side between Lucy Miller, Frances Sumner and Ellie Catchpole. Artemis Clark up front was also causing some problems and was particularly threatening when receiving a quick free hit from Debbie McAllen, but no one could apply the finishing touch. Magpies increasingly pressed but the Sevenoaks goalkeeper was able to keep her goal in tact.
At half time the message was to keep a clean sheet and to stay patient as the way the game was developing there would be chances. The first part was achieved with Louisa Greenacre, Katrina Warnes and Lucy Miler being very solid at the back. However no one expected Sevenoaks to become even more defensive as they left jut two forwards up front and the rest of the team packed behind the ball. Anna Toulson was on the receiving end of some harsh tackling but her skill was troubling a very determined defence. Artemis Clark intercepted a poor pass and rounded the final defender but could not beat the goalkeeper.
Angie Wheelhouse went close with a snap shot but the breakthrough came with seven minutes to go. Magpies won another penalty corner and Angie Wheelhouse followed up to score. Sevenoaks had one last chance to snatch something from the game when a rare sorty into the Magpies half saw them win a penalty corner. Lucy Hayman made the save and Debbie McAllen cleared the pads to ensure Magpies took all three points.
READING 5 HARLESTON MAGPIES 1
Magpies had achieved their first target of the weekend with three points against Sevenoaks on Saturday and this rearranged League game against high flying League leaders Reading on the Sunday was always likely to be a testing occasion. Magpies made the worst possible start after they were pressured in their own 25 area which led to a penalty corner and Becky Drew gave Reading the lead after two minutes.
Magpies gradually recovered from this shock but they were playing against a quality side who were stretching them on the break and giving Magpies little time on the ball. On 21 minutes Magpies conceded a second goal in disappointing circumstances as they appeared to have three chances to clear the ball from their circle, but in the end allowed Claire Kerr to score. Four minutes later Becky Drew made it 3-0 from a penalty corner. At this point Magpies were struggling against the quality of the opposition and appeared very leggy after a hard game on Saturday whilst operating with a small squad.
Again Magpies were punished early in the second half when Claire Kerr made it 4-0 on 38 minutes. However Reading were not immune to defensive frailties as Angie Wheelhouse was very unlucky to see her deflection from a penalty corner rocket off the post and away to safety. After 42 minutes Magpies had some reward for their efforts from another penalty corner when the goalkeeper saved the first shot from Frances Sumner but Debbie McAllen followed up to flick the ball into the net.
After 48 minutes Reading added their fifth goal as Claire Kerr completed her hatrick. With over 20 minutes to go Magpies were staring down the barrel but to their credit they stuck to their principles and played their best hockey of the match with Frances Sumner and Debbie McAllen finding space in midfield and increasingly playing in the Reading half. However it had been a hard afternoon and defenders Katrina Warnes and Louisa Greenacre had been forced to make some big tackles throughout the match. Bryony Lund had also worked hard in this double header weekend.
Bury Vets 1 Magpies Vets 5 Before the game, Captain Bardwell sent out a message of serious intent by investing in a new pair of astro trainers and after much discussion as to the positional line up (not that some took any notice) Magpies took on Bury who occupie bottom place in the league. Magpies started off with the majority of the possession but could not penetrate much beyond the Bury 25, this was partly due to a lack of running off the ball which meant that the player with the ball was forced into taking on too many players and the ball being lost. Bury took the lead with a rising shot that goalkeeper Palmer did well to get a hand to but could not prevent it going just inside the post. Half time was reached with Magpies pressing but it was indicative how little they had threatened the Bury goal despite all their posssession that they had only one short corner in the half. At half time a positional swop of Jonny Wells and the choosen one brought immediate results as for three minutes Roger Kent became Clark Kent to score two superb goals; for one he rounded the goalkeeper by dummying a shot with everyone was convinced was totally accidental. Magpies now started to pass the ball to much greater effect and Ali Williamson scored after a series of one-twos had been played. Wells scored the fourth with a short corner strike and fast reactions from Phil Alexander at another enabled Roger Kent top complete his hat trick. Although this finished as a convincing win Magpies will have to up the standard against the stronger teams |

I'll say no more!
What a frustrating couple of days we had last weekend and especially over the loss of the two games for the Men's 1sts with our pitch fit for play. But I will say no more in case I say something I regret!
On the bright side four of our fixtures survived the weather producing three wins so the weekend was not a complete wipe out. The Ladies' 2nds unfortunately lost 2-1 at

This weekend the Ladies' 1sts have a double header when they entertain Sevenoaks (12.30) on Saturday before travelling to Reading next day to play last Saturday's postponed game. In the first half of the season the Ladies beat Sevenoaks and drew with table topping

Best wishes to all our teams this weekend including the U11 and U13 Boys and Girls in the Watton Minis on Sunday.
News and comments in brief
· Angie Wheelhouse with nine goals is the second highest goal scorer this season in EH's Women's Conference East.
· The recent bad weather has given a lot of hard work to our fixture secretaries Irene Bicker (Ladies) and Merna Merrett (Men). Thank you Irene and Merna. Merna monitored the weather so often last week she must have thought she had joined the Met Office!
· Please let me know if you would like to borrow the club's copy of the recently published history of Weybread. It is an excellent read and includes wedding photographs of Mr and Mrs Stuart Naunton and Mr and Mrs Nick Tibbenham looking even more youthful than they do today!
· Please return your Spring Prize Draw books (with money!) as soon as possible.
· Broxbourne have withdrawn from the national mixed trophy giving the club a walkover into the second round. The game was due to have been played this Sunday.

Magpies beaten by the weather
Harleston Magpies Men’s team sponsored by Hunton Legg maintained their lead at the top of the division when no games were played due to the weather.Magpies had trained during the week and were looking forward to increasing their lead in the league with wins again lowly opposition, however despite the pitch being fit neither of the opposition were able to travel due to poor travelling conditions.
This weekend Magpies play Ipswich seconds who sit mid-table with the second most high goals conceded in the league to their name.Magpies are at full strength again and will want to pick up three points.Local derbies often do not go to form and following the tough game against Dereham Magpies will know not to under estimate Ipswich. With Magpies nearest rivals dropping points in recent weeks attention is no longer focussed on their results but on picking up points to secure the title and promotion to the National League.
After starting the second half of the outdoor season with a 4-1 home win against Maidstone it was disappointing for the weather to intervene to lead to the cancellation of the game last week away against League leaders Reading. Fortunately the Ladies managed to pick up a practice game on Saturday at the last minute against the Mens 2nds who had just had their game cancelled.
This week the Ladies are at home to Sevenoaks on Saturday starting at 12.30. Sevenoaks are just two points behind Magpies and this is the kind of home Magpies need to win to push up the table. Magpies beat Sevenoaks 3-0 away at the beginning of the season but on that day Magpies were 2-0 up in ten minutes and Sevenoaks never quite recovered. Since then they have responded from a poor start to the season to climb to 6th in the League.
On Sunday Magpies travel to play their rearranged League game against Reading which starts at 12.30. Magpies will be without Cherry Seaborn on Sunday who will be attending an England U18 training session. There is also a doubt about Anna Toulson playing on Saturday, whilst Charlotte Harrison is still out with a broken finger. Laura Parker could well return to the squad.
SQUAD FROM: Louisa Greenacre (Capt), Lucy Hayman, Lucy Miller, Helen Brook, Bryony Lund, Debbie McAllen, Ellie Catchpole, Amy Tuffs, Frances Sumner, Katrina Warnes, Anna Toulson, Artemis Clark, Cherry Seaborn, Laura Parker and Angie Wheelhouse.
