Clubs 1st Accreditation for HMHC

We have now received official confirmation and congratulations from England Hockey of our Clubs 1st accreditation and I am pleased to repeat here what I have said on the Active Norfolk website (please see LINKS at the bottom of the Home Page of the Club's website) . "We are delighted to have received this accreditation and I thank our youth development officer Nick McAllen and the youth committee chaired by Helen Barber who worked so hard to achieve this recognition on behalf of the Club. I also thank Charlie Farrow and Connie Bedingfield of England Hockey for all their help and guidance during the preparation process".

I take this opportunity to remind members that Clubs 1st is part of Sport England Clubmark, a nationally recognised accreditation for sports clubs with the aim of club's demonstrating that they provide a safe, effective and child friendly environment for their membership. The scheme has four main focus areas - i) duty of care and child protection, ii) the coaching programme, iii) sports equity and ethics and iv) club management. This status is not awarded without an enormous amount of work and comes as another boost to the Club.

The official presentation of our Clubs 1st award together with our Community Clubs Development Programme award from Sport England (which amounted to an invaluable grant of £35,000 towards the re-carpeting of the sand-based pitch) will be made at 9.30am on Saturday 22 September 2007 during a youth coaching session.

Strawberry Luncheon
This was a very successful social event held in the lovely surroundings of Gawdy Hall and I thank everyone who supported the event. I also thank, of course, our hard working hosts David and Wendy Green and members of the organising committee led by our president David Alexander and secretary Daphne Beckett for all they did to make the luncheon so enjoyable. The event, which was blessed by surprisingly good weather, raised the excellent sum of £1130 for Club funds.

Update on ground and clubhouse upgrades

1. The testing of the upgrade of the floodlights on the two pitches was completed last night (Wednesday 11 July).

2. Work will begin on the building of the disabled toilet next week.

3. The old balcony is now just a memory (many thanks to Andrew and Richard Longe for its removal thereby saving the Club a considerable amount of money) and its replacement will be installed in early August, after which the stairlift will be fitted to the main staircase to the balcony.

4. Harrod UK Limited has very kindly provided the Club with a set of new goals and LMB Services has very kindly donated a set of wheels for goals on the sand-based pitch. The continuing support of these businesses is much appreciated.

Drainage of the road outside the car park
The Club continues to co-operate with Mid Suffolk DC and by extension Weybread Parish Council to solve the flooding problem on the road outside the entrance to our car park. For the next few days a trench is being dug, at no cost to HMHC, across our car park for the installation of a bigger pipe to solve the problem. I thank David Cobbald for all the liaison work he has undertaken on this project in addition to all the other jobs he has carried out at Weybread in recent weeks.

Congratulations to Carl Sitch who is currently playing for England U18s in the EuroHockey Youth Nations Championship in Edinburgh and to Tristan Baynes and Leigh Sitch who have been selected to play for the England Mixed team against the Combined Services and Wales in Southampton this coming weekend.

What makes Harleston special?

The A B C of distinctiveness

Last autumn Harleston Development Partnership held an event looking at what makes Harleston special.

A group of people got together to consider things that made Harleston unique and tried to come up with something for every letter of the alphabet.

A B C

We thought about things that can be seen and also those that are unseen such as friendliness and maybe ghosts!

There were many suggestions including ‘M’ for Magpies and ‘S’ for Stone, ‘I’ for independent shops and ‘A’ for atmosphere.

It was such an interesting, fun thing to do we have decided to do more work on this and prepare postcards, a wall chart or booklet with the complete A B C.

However, before we do this we would like your help, could you spare a few minutes to prepare your own A B C ?

Maybe as you fly off on your holiday or as you sunbathe in the garden(!) there will be time to think about what is special and distinct about the town?

We would also like children and young people to give us their Harleston alphabet, this could be words, pictures or photographs.

Blank A B C forms are available from Harleston Information Plus, (or just jot your thoughts on a piece of paper).

Completed A B Cs should be returned to:
Harleston Information Plus at 8 Exchange Street by 1st September.

Or send us an email:

hip@harleston-norfolk.org.uk

We will keep you posted and put the final A B C on the Waveney Valley Blog.
